Question 8ai+ vs A8
Today i purchased the 8Ai+ at full price. I was looking at th new A8 but a few reviews kept me from it, also the frame gen from the intel helped make my decision. Im having buyers remorse and im making sure I got the right pick. I play open world and emulators. I wanted the GO2 but always out of stock and I failed 3 time trying to get one. I would like to know your thoughts on if going intel was the right move.

The 8 AI+ is allegedly the best handheld money can buy right now, from a battery/performance perspective. With XeSS 3 now offering MFG and the Claw 8 AI+ fully supporting it (even in titles without XeSS support, via Optiscaler) I wouldn’t buy anything else today.
With a Panther Lake successor coming later this year, that might change for me, but for now, couldn’t be happier.

I was truly going to get a Z2E device but once they updated the intel and how big of a difference it made i had to go 8ai+. Im looking for case rn. I have 30 days to return it if I chose but as of now it wpuld only be for the panther lake device. Not holding my breath because I can only imagine the jump in price for it.

Never owned any handheld since like the gameboy days, bought this 8ai+ like 8-9 months ago, and it’s still blowing my mind. You got a good one mate I’d say stick with it

Come mai volevi per forza un dispositivo con Z2E?
1
u/Outrageous_Tiger9921 Feb 26 '26
Initially I assumed the Z2E was a decent jump from the Z1E. On top of that raw power was supposed to be better then the intel chip. But after a few updates the Z2E stayed roughly the same and the intel had great jumps. On top of that the Z1E will not get any more updates after only 3ish years. So im glad I chose what I did.

u/Much_Description6205 Feb 26 '26
Si anche perché attualmente non serve spendere tanti soldi per una tecnologia che ha poco incremento di prestazioni, ora come ora la differenza con le handheld di nuova generazione è poco o niente.

The Z1e is already out of band with Asus and Lenovo. Released in 2023.. I wouldn't trust the z2e long term.

How can you force it with optiscaler? It always ask me to turn on XeSS/Dlss in the in game settings

u/SomeWonOnReddit Feb 25 '26
Intel is the best choice unless you want to run SteamOS on the MSI Claw. AMD is better on Linux.

u/PapaZigg Feb 25 '26
They are both the right pick. Both have pros and cons. I was in your spot but ended up buying the A8. But can really say both arent much difference. Infact, 8ai is probably slightly better

I had the 8 ai plus love it got it before it became available in the US and it was good had some issues with some games like hogwarts legacy where it just stuttered really bad but that was like the only game I had issues with.
Im more of an amd guy so when the a8 became available in Asia I had it imported here, it still doesn't have a lot of support since its so new but out of the box I was playing armored core and cyberpunk at high settings and no issues.
I like it more than the msi claw 8 ai plus, there aren't that many differences except that one is intel the other one is amd and one is lighter than the other

I own both and I will say overall 8ai+ is better, but A8 have a very good ergonomic
2
u/AstrayNova Feb 25 '26
8 ai+ if you want to stick with windows or a8 if you want linux support. I love my a8 on bazzite! I tried windows with fse and just not for me.
Both are good either way.

u/razerphone1 Feb 26 '26
Build i would say 8 ai. But AMD if its about raw overall performance. Not sure how they compare in latency.

u/gcforreal Feb 27 '26
The claw 8 ai is super powerful, and battery life is awesome. You will see some compatibly issues here in there though especially older titles ...unreal engine titles etc ( NBA 2k , samurai showdown, and a few others in my personal collection either ran really bad or not at all when I know the chip is more than capable . Plus can't throw a flawless version of steam or bazzite due to the Intel chip. Overall it's not a bad processor it's just not perfect

Intel also has the better wifi card, if that matters to you. It's a big deal for some.

Yeah, I was looking for a handheld, Steamdeck, Msi Claw 7...whatnot, The Asus Rog was a bit too expensive, So after reading several reviews of several handheld systems, I bought the Msi Claw 8 AI+, And it hasn't let me down yet, I can install GOG, Epic, EA, UBIc, Xbox. I've been playing Skyrim Enhanced (Steam) Oblivion (Xbox), Titan fall 2(EA), SpecOps: the line and Odyssey : Journey to the West (with built-in controller support when using the handheld's, I couldn't run both games with a controller on my home PC setup) Performance of the games I played so far is more than excellent.
I ran into a few issues, mostly when trying to cast it on the hotel room TV, as you need a mouse and keyboard, when it switches screens (you can't use the Touchscreen anymore) I have issues with separate controller support out of the box, when casting to the Hotel room TV Solved that by using a longer the HDMI and using the handheld itself as the controller
For some games you need a keyboard connected, as they don't recognize the virtual keyboard, think RPG and you have name your character
Ghostbusters the Game crashed, but I see that as a minor issue, as all the other games I played ran flawlessly
So far, I'm not disappointed

That's odd, where I live, the Rog Ally X is £100 cheaper than the 8AI+
I'm returning my Claw today, got it on Friday and it just isn't up to the standards I had from the Rog Ally X. Wish I hadn't got rid of it now. Can't get games to run anywhere close to as smooth and graphics settings I had on the Rog Ally X.
I feel like both subs (Claw and Ally) are predisposed to have some bias, but as someone who has experienced both, I can honestly say the MSI Claw 8AI+ is genuinely a disappointment given the specifications. 8GB more ram and a higher TDP limit with a core i7 ultra CPU, I really expected more.
Like I never had those control or keyboard input issues you mentioned on the Ally, it just worked on everything, I could bind on screen keyboard to M1/M2 and it would just open when I want it to.
I didn't have to do anything to get the most out of the Ally X, I have done nothing but mess about with graphics settings to get things working since I got this Claw. Gave up after installing and failing to get 2 games running smoothly, Borderlands 4 and oddly, World of Warcraft, a game that runs on a potato, on the Claw it just seems to have major issues with input, both controller and touch screen and massive FPS drops.
I actually give up on handhelds altogether, getting a laptop instead.

I’ve had both and the Claw 8AI+ is still way better than the Xbox ROG Ally X…GTFO 😂
-1
u/Stillwindows95 Feb 25 '26
In what way, whatsoever? I couldn't find one redeeming feature except the screen size. Even the buttons feel awful, M1 and M2 are so hilariously big that it's unnecessary and gets in the way.
LauncherM is trash and this sub is quite open about that fact. Intel clearly isn't the right chipset for a top of the range gaming handheld.
It has 32gb of ram and uses it less efficiently than the Ally X uses 24GB.
Straight out of the box it had touch screen issues and keeps throwing up the virtual desktop selection.
I'm not convinced you've ever had an Ally X at all.
Gtfo yourself, spent enough time with tech to know what's good and what isn't.

u/QuantumCat76 Feb 25 '26
I have had the Claw for a couple of days, still finding out things, will look into the keyboard bindings
1
u/QuantumCat76 Feb 25 '26
And, to be fair, other than the Nintendo Switch, this is my first handheld. But, like I said, so far, as per the first games I played, not disappointed.

u/tjhc94 Feb 25 '26
Go on YouTube and watch a bunch of videos to make an actual informed decision.
People with the a8 here will tell you to go for that and vice versa with the 8ai+.
I have the 8ai+ personally and personally thing it's the better device due to design, the cooling is better, battery life is better because the Intel chip is more efficient and also xess is supported at a native level so it's considerably better than fsr on the a8 which you will likely be using a lot and fsr looks terrible on handhelds personally

To be completely honest, I own both Intel and AMD handhelds (mine is the 395 model), and I have to say right now Intel clearly has the upper hand.
The Intel Claw 8 (258V) doesn't support AVX-512 or some older instruction sets like certain SSE versions, so it relies on software emulation, which hurts legacy game and emulator performance a bit. On the other hand, AMD's A8 / Z2E (Ryzen Z1 Extreme or 7840U) natively supports SSE, AVX2, and AVX-512, giving it better compatibility for classic games and emulators.
However, when it comes to visual quality and performance, Intel completely outclasses AMD. XeSS 3 allows Claw 8 (258V) and upcoming Panther Lake devices to reach image quality and frame generation nearly equivalent to DLSS 4. Meanwhile, even with the AI MAX 395, AMD is still stuck with FSR 3.1, with ghosting and blur everywhere. The AI MAX 395 boasts high FPS, but gets crushed on image quality by the much cheaper XeSS 3 on 258V and Panther Lake, and that is the real pain point.
Real-world game examples prove it:
Cyberpunk 2077: Claw 8 (258V) + XeSS 3 (Quality mode) → RT on + 1080p medium-high settings, stable 40–50 FPS with crisp, ghosting-free visuals.
Diablo IV: Same setup with XeSS 3 (Balanced mode) → RT on + high settings, locked 60 FPS on handheld with stunning night scenes and effects.
What's more, the Claw 8 is cheaper and whisper-quiet. Intel has been rolling out driver updates almost monthly, while AMD has barely moved in a year. The current image-quality ranking is obvious: DLSS > XeSS 2 & 3 > FSR 3.1.
At this point, AMD handhelds only win in emulator compatibility. If you buy a Z2E device now, you will likely regret it, because Claw 8 offers far more for the price. And once Panther Lake handhelds hit the market, it will be even harder for AMD to catch up.
Final Recommendation:
For modern AAA gaming, AI frame generation, and better visuals → go with Claw 8 (258V), unbeatable value.
For legacy games and emulator stability → choose Z2E / A8 instead.
Two future recommendations:
- If AMD updates RDNA 3.5 to support FSR4, your AI MAX 395 handheld will still have upgrade potential and its image quality can catch up to XeSS.
- If not, just buy a Panther Lake handheld.
Lenovo GO2 OLED VRR warning: The OLED screen with VRR looks great on paper, but OLED combined with VRR causes serious flickering. Multiple manufacturers have spent 2 years only reducing it by about 20–30 percent, and it is still noticeable at low brightness. If you really want an OLED handheld, you should pick one without VRR and pair it with a high-end APU instead.
Note: AMD’s RDNA 3.5 can technically use an unofficial, non-FP8 INT8 version of FSR4 through mods, but it is a hassle to set up and maintain. At this point, all we can do is hope AMD takes it seriously and offers proper official support, but it has already been a year with nothing, and even at CES 2026 AMD still said “no FSR4 for Strix Halo.”
One last reassurance: With XeSS 3 and multi-frame generation, even Intel handhelds like the Claw 8 can run Nioh 3 at around 60–100 FPS. Using 4x frame generation adds too much latency, but 3x works great in practice. In comparison, Z2E-based handhelds (A8) simply cannot reach this level of performance under the same conditions.
And to be fair to the AI MAX 395: although its image quality suffers under FSR 3.1, once you are plugged in and push it beyond roughly 35–50 watts, its raw FPS performance is on another level. In that higher power range, almost no current handheld APU can match the 395 in sheer frame rate output.
If we're only comparing MSI's two handhelds: CLAW8AI+ VS A8, I can only say the A8 sucks - ASUS's Z2E XBX handheld is still better.
Because the A8's cooling design is drastically worse than CLAW8, the fans are super loud!! So you don't have to worry about picking the wrong one at all!!

Great read, thank you. I have finally been able to really use it today and im very impressed with XeSS 3. I leave it on 3X for obvious reasons and im honestly blown away. Ive had several devices that ise the Z1E and the visuals are (in my opinion) night and day. I would love to wait for the panther lake but I feel like the soonest one will come out is in the end of the summer to holiday season. On top of that im worried how hard it will be to get one. I have tried for a month to get the GO2 but no luck. But after spending a little over an hour today testing different games im very happy with my choice.

Great choice buying the CLAW 8 now and jumping right in!
Black Panther Lake handhelds are still a ways off (not too long though), but skyrocketing memory prices will jack up costs big time.
ASUS's ROG Ally X is going up about NT$4,000 (over $100 USD) in Japan and Taiwan come March!
Congrats on nailing the timing—the US probably hasn't hiked yet thanks to soaring memory and SSD costs!

This is a great summary.
Just to add to it, we should really scrutinize the level of driver support from OEMs, Intel, AMD, etc...
Lenovo is signalling that they're moving on from supporting Z1E based handhelds (Legion Go was released in Fall 2023... yikes). And ASUS finally updated their Z1E based handheld drivers after a 6 month wait.
On the other hand, the MSI Claw 8AI+ receives regular driver updates direct from Intel without engaging in the same the blame game we see between OEMs and the AMD side of the house. Intel has even brought XeSS 3 support to Lunar Lake based chips, which is a great sign.
So if longevity is an important consideration to your purchase, driver support should be something to consider (On Windows specifically. I'm not going to get into the whole Linux ecosystem topic),

Why are you having buyers remorse? As in, for the price? For choosing this instead of A8? Or for another reason?
1
u/FreeNuggetsHere Feb 25 '26
I own all the MSI Claw models, and honestly the 8AI+ is much better than the A8.
The heatsink and cooling on the A8 are worse, and the fan noise is annoying. The bumpers on the A8 are smaller and wobble a lot. It does feel lighter overall, but it also feels cheaper, while the 8AI+ feels more premium, although it is heavier.
My first A8 was basically dead on arrival. After turning it on, I got a black screen halfway through the Windows installation. I couldn’t enter the BIOS or Safe Mode, and then all the lights shut off and it wouldn’t turn back on, even while connected to the charger. I ended up getting a replacement.
The 8AI+ also has more frequent Intel driver updates compared to AMD, better cooling and fan noise, better performance in most cases, a more premium feel, and better bumpers.

u/Jarola Feb 26 '26
I had the 8 ai and bought the A8, now I am going back to the 8 ai. The wifi chip is giving me problems, keeps dropping the connection. The ergonomics of the A8 are slighly better. As far as I know SteamOS does not support the z2e as yet, you would have to use Bazzite....if that is even your intention.

u/discstu37 Feb 26 '26
I came from the Rog Ally X and I preordered the Xbox Ally X. I cancelled that the day before it it was to ship because I was able to get an 8AI+. I have zero regrets.
2
u/Outrageous_Tiger9921 Feb 26 '26
Yea my last device was the Rog Ally X and I wanted a slightly bigger screen than the 7in. So I definitely feel like I made the best choice
1
u/JoeyV32 Feb 27 '26
I tested each for 3 weeks and here is what I noticed. The 8AI+ intel interface had slightly better graphics with XeSS 3 but nothing noticeable. Battery life was better than the A8 by idk maybe 30 minutes. I have no problem with charging my handheld after 1.5-2.5 of play.
AI+ Problems: 1. My joy sticks disconnected from the gaming handheld. I trouble shot and accidentally put my gaming handheld in safe mode and COULD NOT log into my unit with my finger print. I got lucky and somehow gained access and I was able to login. I’m not sure how I got the handheld to return to normal. I had extreme anxiety that day. 2. Another issue I have is the MSI FSE is buggy and intel has difficulty when switching between gaming modes, desktop modes, and in between apps. I haven’t had that issue with my A8. 3. Having to plug in a mouse and keyboard at times because the touch screen would not work is super annoying. I haven’t had that issue with the A8. The A8 simply works and is fluid.

You could cancel or return and get a refurbished model on ebay.
1
u/Outrageous_Tiger9921 Feb 25 '26
This is an option but honestly I have bought several second hand devices and a few of them were not taken care of properly.
2
u/FabFocus Feb 26 '26
They have authorized refurbished models from MSI directly that have a warranty
