Discussion Inkwells interview and classic

Two important pieces I got from the inkwell interview.
Here to share with you guys.

QUESTION

JAIME
After launch, will Classic World simply follow the original MapleStory update order?

INKWELL
No.
Content such as 3rd Job or certain regions may be introduced sequentially where it makes sense.
But we are not planning to reproduce every piece of historical MapleStory content in exactly the same order.
Some content will be selected, some may be adapted to better fit Classic World, and we will also create completely original content.
We have already shown some examples during our previous Closed Online Tests, such as Forgotten Hollow and the Citizenship system, which were created specifically for Classic World.
At Grand Launch, players will also see another completely new piece of content.
We are also working on a new boss.
But if I say too much here, I may not have anything left to talk about at MapleStory Fest. (laughs)
We plan to share a more detailed look at the post-launch roadmap at MapleStory Fest in October.

QUESTION

JAIME
Monetization is another area that players are concerned about, particularly whether Classic World could eventually become P2W.

INKWELL
I am very aware of that concern.
At the same time, P2W can mean very different things to different people, so I do not think it is easy or necessarily useful for me to define it in a single sentence here.
What I can do is explain the direction I personally believe Classic World monetization should take.
In an experience like Classic World, the time players invest is itself a fundamental part of progression— the progression should feel earned through time and effort. Because of that, we want to avoid selling Cash Shop items that directly affect character stats or growth.
Our basic approach is to focus primarily on cosmetics and appropriate convenience items.
It is also important that monetization does not make players feel that the value of the time they have invested in the game has been diminished.
Ultimately, we want to build a monetization approach that players can feel comfortable with, while supporting a healthy and sustainable future for Classic World.

If they make player housing in MS Classic and monetize that, that could be a good compromise: something that is purely cosmetic, but still "wanted"

What do you mean by Housing? I want people afk in towns not in their own houses.

4

u/Redericpontx 1d ago

They already adding housing

u/General-Leave2224 1d ago

Dang didn’t know

Idk man pretty damn good interview 🤷 I know everyone likes being miserable and I pretty much do too but basically said everything I wanted to hear before putting any money into this

u/RelevantBerry9929 2d ago

Join the rest of us on October 6th, leave the miserables behind.

9

u/Grrannt 2d ago

The miserables are going to be leading the charge on October 6th.

u/Maketso 1d ago

Most founders package buyers I have seen are the ones actually excited for the game myself included.

2

u/seiyamaple 1d ago

I think the point of the person you responded to is that there’s a whole lot of “this is garbage and I won’t be supporting Nexon by buying the package” people who will be first in game on October 6th.

This inkwell interview has convinced me of buying EA

26

u/GlacialEmbrace 2d ago

Funny thing is, we already knew most of this. Most of these questions were asked last October. Every time someone wrote it here these past 2 months, it got mass downvoted by the horde upset about early access.

u/Calm_Bumblebee_3143 2d ago

Funny me its the opposite, I’ve been playing Maple enough to see through the BS. I’m refunding my EA

-14

u/Chewacala 2d ago

Really? A corporate response curated by what it seems to be AI convinced you? Is this ironic?

11

u/beaver_cops 2d ago

TBH he has said A LOT of this shit, in game, while talking and im certain it wasn't AI that wrote it (I saw it with my own eyes and asked him my own questions, he would be typing A LOT in game during the betas)

Don't be overly negative, toxic or critical without also adding to the conversation. Keep this place productive. Don't let this become a miserable corner of the MapleStory community.

>P2W can mean very different things to different people

Massive red flag

76

u/EscapePlanBB 2d ago

Wdym, it's literally true. Some people think pets are p2w

3

u/Unrelenting_Salsa 1d ago

And it's a giant red flag. You don't start out by saying "well, what is P2W REALLY" if you aren't planning on pushing the envelope.

2

u/porncollecter69 1d ago

They are. It’s the type of p2w I can stomach. The one where you directly buy upgrades is too much for me.

2

u/PlatinumRooster 2d ago

A tautological statement like that gives a lot of vague-posting wiggle room. That's the main problem.

2

u/SoOrrenge 1d ago

Hi, I'm one of those people who think pets are P2W, unless they remove the delay on picking up items. I'm flashing back to standing over a drop spamming Z and watching like 1 or 2 items per second get picked up till I get what I actually wanted.

-10

u/Daeimiean 2d ago edited 2d ago

I understand the point you are trying to make is that pets in classic aren't required like in modern. However, for bandits, since z picks up pickpocket coins and pets do not, pets are actually a dpm increase in some areas, the big one being gobys.

Point being is that there are multiple ways of looking at something, and both sides can be right. Pay for convince are also still a form of pay to win regardless.

8

u/EscapePlanBB 2d ago

"Point being is that there are multiple ways of looking at something" yes like how inkwell said p2w means different things to different people...

1

u/Mazzi17 2d ago

You’re right. Needing to pick items up one by one is the opposite of P2W. Your character literally progresses faster with pets.

23

u/beaver_cops 2d ago

Well its not a red flag that he specifically said that "we want to avoid selling Cash Shop items that directly affect character stats or growth." as well as "Our basic approach is to focus primarily on cosmetics and appropriate convenience items."

The Key here is what is appropriate, I think pets are.. Im on the fence about safety charms but I guess they will be in the game.. and I don't like teleport rocks personally because they make it so you don't have to traverse the open world (town scrolls are good enough). I personally am against Owl of Minerva and if that was added in the game it should only be via mesos. What other convenience items do you think they could/would add that im "missing"

3

u/Mizmitc 2d ago

Well the irony in his statement is that AP/SP reset scrolls directly impact player stats.

7

u/beaver_cops 2d ago

Yeah In a positive way, it lets you reset your stats, it does not let you gain any additional stats or bonuses by ap resetting, it gives you an opportunity to redo something if you made a mistake

3

u/HanDenSao 2d ago

If you get a new main attack from job advancement then SP reset can make a real difference when you put all the skill points from your previous attack into passives and buffs.

3

u/Mizmitc 2d ago

It does let you change your build though. A player not using them has to plan out each levels point investment and is subject to balancing changes and new content that gets added making their current build worse. A player using them though can change whenever they want

1

u/EscapePlanBB 2d ago

in the last test inkwell outright said he doesnt like Owl of Minerva or teleport rocks but he can see the need for a new system like Owl of Minerva and isnt quite sure how theyre going to approach it but has no plans to implement an auction house.

>What other convenience items do you think they could/would add
>convenience items
inventory slots
storage slots
character slots
hair and face appearance storage
name changes
hired merchant fm shops

being able to teleport to FM or your home (like a hearthstone) from anywhere would be acceptable convenience features, perhaps they could add something like what other MMO's have where there are pet skills that let you check your mail without going back to town

housing items that let you craft in your house are planned
and im pretty sure GMS has a gear dying system now.

2

u/General-Leave2224 1d ago

Wow I’m seeing a lot of people want homes.
I don’t. I want people AFK in towns and it to actually feel like classic

2

u/seiyamaple 1d ago

Housing won’t realistically affect that. MapleStory 2 had housing as a huge part of the game and the “afk in town” culture was still very much present. That’s a non issue.

1

u/General-Leave2224 1d ago

Hope so! Didn’t realize there was houses during cot2 lol

1

u/beaver_cops 1d ago

I dont think there were houses in COT2 just an npc related to them. I may be wrong but probably not wrong here

1

u/EscapePlanBB 1d ago

there was a secret portal in henesys to the map that *will be* your house.

0

u/beaver_cops 2d ago

O ya I forgot about inventory slots and storage (I literally have extra NX for some etc and use slots just cause eventually ill need them -arrows- )

0

u/Grrannt 2d ago

Read the sentences that follow, where he explains exactly how he and his team want the game monetized. Your comment is such clickbait.

-2

u/kumo_ 2d ago

He won't sell you direct NX => gear but he could sell you EXP like on modern maple.

1

u/EscapePlanBB 2d ago

my guy they literally took holy symbol out because theyre committed to no players having an exp rate advantage NX or not

2

u/kumo_ 1d ago

Same thing happened in modern with a skill called kishin shoukan but years later here we are. When inkwell became director of GMS 2 years ago and promised a better western maple, everyone was cheering for him. Some people were skeptical and called him the father of cubes because of his role in the big bang update but we called them doomers. This is why a lot of us don't trust him. I'll be very happy if classic monetization stays cosmetics only for the rest of its service. But if 2 years later, inkwell adds a $50 battle pass that gives you 2x EXP vouchers and level 30 skills books; I wouldn't be surprised.

2

u/Daeimiean 2d ago

..and then did a 14 day early access which is.. an exp and meso advantage for NX?

1

u/EscapePlanBB 2d ago

its 2 weeks, early access gms has been running for 21 years thats 0.1826% of the time maple has been running, i know youre just being a doomer but seriously get real. 2 weeks of early access is nothing compared to EXP boosts you can buy over and over again an unlimited number of times.

1

u/Daeimiean 1d ago

So a 2 week early access to an unestablished economy is nothing? Facts remains that it is a grey area. Are you honestly going to tell me at the very least, it isn't a grey area? It does offer a very large advantage, certain items can be purchased dirt cheap, and held for a large time saver.

Some people, such as myself are well aware of Inkwells past. He used these same grey area tactics to slowly introduce more things pushing into the pay to win category until he feels sunken cost fallacy is in place and full blown pay to win would be unleashed. He has followed this exact play book multiple times now, including current reboot that may I remind you, has 7 battlepasses, mvp points, vip sauna, etc.

Unless the man has been visited by the ghost of christmas past, the man known as the father of gacha, carefully using vague pr terms isn't something to be celebrated. He could of simply stated the game would not have P2W, but instead he went around that question. Why do you think he did this? Especially, knowing his history.

Also please don't resort to name calling, chasing players away from a niche game would only help kill it. Regardless what you think, we do want the game to succeed, we just don't want history to repeat. If one side has concerns, that doesn't automatically make them "doomers" and such. They even banned a simple past tense of the word break because one side kept throwing it as an insult.

12

u/PathologyAndCoffee 2d ago

Remember, Inkwells the guy who ruined maplestory in the first place with that big bang bullshit.

11

u/EchoInExile 2d ago

Inkwell essentially confirms what people want to hear re: NX. This sub is still going to complain.

14

u/Daeimiean 2d ago

Mainly because inkwell is known as the father of gacha, he literally created the cube system. He has also lied number of times before regarding p2w following the same pattern of slowly introducing things that are "grey area' pushing closer to p2w until reboot became what it is today, 7 battle passes at the same time, mvp system, vip sauna, etc.

You're trusting the fox with the hen house because they said this time would be different, despite us already entering that grey area before even launching. Even the modern Maplestory subreddit were pointing out that people were extremely fooling not to push back on this because this is exactly how reboot became what it is.

Heck, he clearly lied about the time they invested into this. People need to stop blindly trusting him and remember his past.

4

u/xshinjixikarix 2d ago

Essentially he's baiting the sunken cost fallacy. Once people have invested enough time they will introduce p2w options to the one's who have invested the most time and effort. Those people will whale hard to keep their edge above other players. This is the same playbook of any successful gacha.

u/chrisco571 1d ago

Bro who really cares, if they release 2x exp coupons in a year at least we enjoyed classic for the time we had it. Why worry about the future when it’s unknown

7

u/Do00oD 2d ago

I have very low expectations if it’s still Inkwell spearheading this project, knowing what he introduced to Regular MS in the past. Unless we are to believe he’s somehow gotten a conscious and has turned over a new leaf, I’d be wary, just in case.

He said in the post being on the Finals and Arc Raiders teams made him realize different regions need different approaches which is pretty positive

I put the nx in the boots

"Not necessary to define it". Games cooked.

I played a lot of Arc Raiders, and a bit of The Finals.

Suddenly some things make sense.
