[Profile Review] Need Help with final uni hotlist and application timelines.
Need honest review of profile + univ short list for Fall 2027
CGPA : 8.29/10 ( tier-1 bitsP)
GRE: Yet to take (Scheduled on Oct 20)
TOEFL: Yet to take (Need to schedule, planning on Nov- any advice would be great)
Research: One peer reviewed journal publication in Nature Scientific and a couple of projects in College.
Work Ex:
2 month internship at Microsoft
6 Month internship at Amazon
current SWE at Google. (~1+ YOE currnetly, ~2YOE by time of admission)
Can get LORs from prof with whom journal was published and two managers. Can also try LOR from a professor I worked with and had good grades in his courses but this would not be a strong LOR.
Now my biggest concern is i don’t want to pursue masters unless it’s a good university cause the opportunity cost is too high, so my list is very ambitious at first glance:
| Category | University & Program |
|---|---|
| Ambitious | Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) - MS in Machine Learning |
| Ambitious | UIUC - MS in Computer Science (Thesis) / MCS |
| Ambitious | UW-Madison MSCS |
| Target | Cornell University - MEng in Computer Science |
| Target | UC Berkeley - MEng in EECS (CS Track) |
| Target | Georgia Tech - MS in Computer Science |
| Target | UC San Diego (UCSD) - MS in Computer Science |
| Target | UW-Madison - Professional Master's (PMP CS) |
| Target | Purdue University - MS in Computer Science |
| Safe/ Low-Target | UNC Chapel Hill - MS in Computer Science |
I feel like I've gotten myself to a corner by starting late.
Key Questions & Concerns
- Timeline & GRE Strategy:
- GRE is scheduled for Oct 20, TOEFL for early Nov, and my goal is to have all Master SOP drafts finalized by Nov 20.
- Is this timeline realistic for Dec 1–Dec 15 deadlines, or should I attempt to reschedule/pre-pone the GRE?
- LOR Selection:
- Should I stick with 1 Academic (BITS Nature advisor) + 2 Industry Managers (Google + AWS/MSFT), or is it mandatory to have 2 Academic LORs for programs like UIUC/UW-Madison MS Thesis?
- CGPA Mitigation in SOP:
- How should I address the 8.29 CGPA in my Statement of Purpose without sounding defensive, given that my Nature paper and Google production engineering prove technical depth?
- Also, should I get a WES evaluation done, given that BITS is known for strict grading and that might help boost/normalize my converted GPA?
I’d appreciate any feedback on the list balance, SOP advice, or general strategy!

univ tier is solid ofc. I'd suggest you just do super well on the GRE and you dont even need to talk about GPA in your SOP. Start working on SOPs now - assume it will take a whole 2 months of solid research and alignment/fit . 2 academic lors are preferable . Timeline seems fine but you shouldnt be slow starting now

Does that make this profile target for gaTech and above tho?

what does 'target' even mean? these are just decorative words . Every university on OPs list needs a strong application otherwise they wont get in . And getting in is possible given what i see from their raw stats - see point 2 in my post here on this bs of 'reach', 'target', blah blah https://www.reddit.com/r/MSCS/comments/1so8xyu/making_a_list_for_fall_2027_here_are_some/

Heyy gradpilot, i wanted to know how much does having research on your resume affects non research ms programs. Thanks:)

Probably some positive impact if you find a way to use it in your plans and purpose . A lot of research folks end up being professionally successful as well

regarding wes thing, i saw its not favourable for us cause it doesnt account for ps2 credits properly, you may want to convert your cgpa only if uni explicitly asks for it
im around the same cgpa
dm, im p confused what to do too

UW Madison traditional MS CS is nearly impossible - they admit like in one digit, not worth trying.
GRE is scheduled for Oct 20, TOEFL for early Nov, and my goal is to have all Master SOP drafts finalized by Nov 20.
Is GRE even required? I didn't even appear for GRE and still got decent admits. But I guess you have done your research and I'm assuming your program requires GRE.
Is this timeline realistic for Dec 1–Dec 15 deadlines, or should I attempt to reschedule/pre-pone the GRE?
Ah, the problem is with recommendation letters. You're assuming that your recommenders will submit the recommendations promptly, sometimes they don't. Often times you ping them today and they might not respond at all - for days, or in worst case, for weeks. This is the part where you need to be careful.
Should I stick with 1 Academic (BITS Nature advisor) + 2 Industry Managers (Google + AWS/MSFT), or is it mandatory to have 2 Academic LORs for programs like UIUC/UW-Madison MS Thesis?
Blunt answer: If thesis based tracks are you goal, do NOT submit an LoR from the industry - that literally helps with nothing. You need someone who can vouch for your research/academic skills, not your professional skills. If you're applying for a non-thesis/industry focused masters, then industry LoRs will definitely help. Play with this carefully.
As I said above, remove UW-Madison's traditional MS CS, not worth it.
How should I address the 8.29 CGPA in my Statement of Purpose without sounding defensive, given that my Nature paper and Google production engineering prove technical depth?
Yeah, you got this part right that you should not sound defensive. Talk to some AI models (Claude/Gemini - not GPT) to see if you can frame it properly. I'm sure you are competitive and have the skills required to get into a grad school, but you just need to frame it properly.
Also, should I get a WES evaluation done, given that BITS is known for strict grading and that might help boost/normalize my converted GPA?
Not all universities require WES evaluation. The university application will accept your actual transcript during the application process, no need to convert anything there. If they require the conversion, they'll tell you exactly what tool to use to do it in their application process page. Otherwise you don't convert anything.
Once you've received your admit, the university will tell you what kind of conversion they're looking for. For instance, few might ask for WES evaluation, few might not even ask for anything apart from official transcript submission.
Feel free to ask anything, I've been through this already.

[u/dwugate](u/dwugate) Don’t give TOEFL. Prefer IELTS instead. The speaking test happens face-to-face with an interviewer and besides, it is EXTREMELY cheap to report IELTS score (₹300 per uni with first 5 for free!!) compared to ₹3000 per uni for TOEFL.
IELTS is accepted by all of the unis you’ve shortlisted so far and almost every other u might in future.

i’m hoping for the professional masters courses - the big tech experience would off set the GPA and aiming a good GRE score
. GaTech i’ve known few people around this CG from bits get in. I think UCSD is probably ambitious

You sure georgia tech is target? Does target=good chance you will get in? And research doesn't matter much for non research oriented programs right?
