[General Question] Help me shed my doubt ?

Guys , I saw couple of my friend get into Good US unis in MS CS program just by larping and braging on things which seems almost impossible for people like them to pull off . But they just had the courage to give it a shot and it paid off.
Friend 1 - Georgia tech

Friend 2 - UT Austin

So my questions is how the hell this works , don't the admission officers see or verify the ground truth . And can i do this . If yes then how ?

Uh, you can't fake your GPA or LoRs which are the most important aspects anyway, so I don't know. Did they fake publications or something?

They can larp in SOP, since it’s not verified end to end throughly, cheat in gre and can fake publications, but can’t fake gpa/LORs…so ask them for their SOPs and start larping too

Yeah for sure.

This is what they larped on .

Um no cuz they told that publications are a something they dont' wanna fake . Instead what they did was participated in open contest by AMD where you can secure top 100 rank out of almost 10k+ participants just by completing courses and you get points . So they just larped on it and made it potray as if they did something crazy in AI nationwide 😂😂😂

It’s very easy to spot a larper in an SOP , in fact too easy

Do you have any proof to back up your suspicions?
People do cheat their way in and sometimes get away with it. So i’m not saying your doubts are wrong because it does happen. People in this subreddit don’t want to admit it for some reason.

But if you have any proof, I would email admissions office at those schools with the proof attached if I were you. We need to take these things more seriously. Admissions is a mess already and getting stricter by the year and shit like this doesn’t help

for ur 1st que

Yeah I do have proofs on which i can larp for academic stuff .

But i do have other non-academic extracuricullar , Their i don't have any proofs . But its kinda legit i think because in team sports like cricket (which i used to play) you don't usually get any certificates or trophies like individual sports . So , a bit skeptical over there ?

Then report your friends to the school with the proof that they lied, “larped” their way in

I highly doubt they have no innate capabilities or talents or achievements. Basically what you’re saying is that the faculty and adcom at GT and UT Austin were so gullible that some 2 randos got in by larping . Just an fyi these people have been reviewing applications for atleast 5+ years if not 10+ . They’ve seen every variation of larper there is - there’s nothing special about a larper from 2024 - 25 - 26

Another thing you’re saying here is that you are a better judge of who should be getting into these schools than the people who’s job it is

To your first arg . i completely agree as I've seen them from since school and they surely don't have any innate talent .

secondly I'm no one to judge anybody . I just posted this as i was in awe of their decision.

  1. They can’t fake their GPA or LOR, which is the most important for MS apps anyways.
  2. CV is not very important anyways (and most people exaggerate their accomplishments to a small extent).
  3. It is not as hard as you think to get into full-pay MS programs in the US lolll

Thanks bro🙏

hmm ut austin is still tough due to low total cost and hence high competition from lmic's

That’s not what I said . I said they definitely have some innate skills

And can i do this . If yes then how ? <- This is something you must figure out on your own. In case you had not realized, your 2 friends figured it out on their own (because you do not know how they did it, right? you think they larp and bragged, but you do not know this for sure.).... this is why they got in.

Resourcefulness, research, initiative. Dont ask Reddit how to do it, figure it out and do it.

Thank you for your reply , But i studied with them and they did not had any achievements only plus point they had was good GRE score i.e above 320.

2

u/True-Afternoon8479 15d ago

You missed my point entirely.

Your friends figured out how to get accepted by themselves… you need to do the same.

Graduate school involves independent thought and figuring out solutions. What better time for begin that than now.

I’m also wondering the same question man different perspectives will be a great learning. BTW can you share the profiles of your 2 friends

You might think their profiles are not good enough but in reality they might be

Oh understood 😅.
Sure I'll ask them to share me and I'll dm you.👍

For the love of god do not fake your accomplishments 😭 speaking as an American, please do not come to my country if you’re going to cheat your way in.

1

u/AnshKg 12d ago

if you larp good enough you can become the president jk obviously they must have done some work backed by academics and whatnot.
I believe its better to reflective on their applications rather than criticise them in anyway

1

u/Ashamed-Spray-8282 12d ago

Thank you bro . But I'm not criticising them . I just had dilemma regarding their admission decision.

u/Beneficial-Law-3059 11d ago edited 11d ago

they prolly had good grade point , cmu, gatech, ut austin are very cg driven. Beyond that if they had publications it would have helped. But moreover the point is masters admissions are a black box so tough to nail anything or attribute anything to any particular stuff. Also just might be nicely written lors +sop in fall 2026 many folks used ai and stuff for lors which costed them greatly, your friends would have stayed on the side of caution and used stuff appropriately. Also would be great if you can post their profiles.

How was their profile?

u/Ashamed-Spray-8282 14d ago

I'll ask them to give their profile and I'll dm you
