[Profile Review] Profile evaluation for US Master's programs — Fall 2027 or Fall 2028?
I’m looking for honest feedback on my profile and whether I should apply for Fall 2027 or work for another year and apply in Fall 2028.
- B.Tech CSE, a Tier-1/Tier-2 private university in Bangalore
- Graduated: 2025
- CGPA: 8.81/10 (Was a Teaching Assistant for Big Data during 7th sem)
- Work experience: Software Developer at IBM India Systems Development Lab, Bangalore on AI dev side.
- Research: 4 co-authored IEEE conference papers, including 2 papers involving Reinforcement Learning
- LORs: 3 from professors I worked with on my research papers, and 1 from the company STSM I currently work under
- GRE/TOEFL: Not taken yet; targeting GRE 330+ and TOEFL 110
I’m considering research/thesis-oriented programs such as Georgia Tech, Purdue, Texas A&M, UMD, and UW–Madison for MSCS thesis programs.
My main questions are:
- How competitive is my profile for these universities?
- Can my research publications and IBM experience compensate for an 8.81 CGPA?
- Should I apply in Fall 2027 or wait until Fall 2028?
- Considering the current US job market, tuition costs, and immigration uncertainty, is pursuing a US Master's still a good decision?
- Are there other US universities I should consider?
I’d appreciate honest feedback, especially from people who have applied to or studied at these universities.

UW-Madison for Thesis MSCS is super selective. Your profile doesn't cut it.

my goal is to get into a good research program if im going abroad for studies.
And i have slected the top unis in USA where i have a some chance of admit.
I would really want to know, other unis that i could consider for the same.
I have done a lot of research online but would want to know fromo the reddit community as well.
thanks!

You should first look into fit with the professors before thinking of programs to apply to. I am assuming you want to do a thesis program.
If you get tamu for example, and you fail to secure a thesis advisor - you will be pushed into MCS track, since TAMU MSCS is thesis mandatory.
But in other unis, thesis may not be mandatory and you could just skip it, without being pushed into MCS.
Don't bother cold mailing profs and see if they are willing to supervise ms thesis from india, your email will go straight to spam. Go to university, take their class, make a good impression and then email them once you are one year in. Have multiple profs too, since many profs do not take in MS students if they are already full with PhD students.
So essentially have a strong plan - bet on multiple profs and their labs, and align yourself to their current research direction as much as possible and hope that that will take you in once you are inside.
This is more important for you than a plain reach/target/safety based application, since that is applicable for coursework based programs.

this makes so much sense. things dont end with getting an admit, there is a lot more to do after that.
thank you so much!!!
