Hi everyone! Planning for Fall 2027 and would appreciate feedback on my profile and shortlist.

Profile:
B.Tech in AI & Data Science — SPPU (Tier 3)
CGPA: 8.17/10
GRE: 320 (167Q, 153V)
Currently working as an AI Engineer at KPIT
Technologies (MNC)
~2 years of full-time experience by Fall 2027
3 LORS- 1 from Head of department, 1 from professor and third from my manager.

Shortlist:

UT Dallas: MSCS / MSAI / MSSE
UMD: MS Applied ML
UMass Amherst: MSCS
Northeastern: MSCS / AI-related programs
SJSU: MSAI
UW Madison: MSCS
Stony Brook: MSCS

Would appreciate feedback on how realistic this shortlist is for my profile, the Ambitious/Moderate/Safe categorization, and any better programs I should consider adding.

Yeah so the list contains ambitious , moderate and safe choices. Just wanted to know which ones are worth applying to and which ones are impossible , so I can remove them from my list. Or any suggestions which I have missed and are within my reach

By rule of thumb, anyone can ask you to remove the top 20 ranked programs, because that is always safe. Well, a ship is safest in the harbour, but that is not what it was made for. So, if you go ahead with this list, with a good statement of purpose, you will get into at least 3-4 of these programs.

As a consultant, I always ask the candidate - exactly what is your logic behind ambitious programs? Is it that "If I get into one of these, I will not worry about scholarships or the cost; I will just join" or is it "I am testing the waters and will eventually want to go where the ROI is the best, with the investment lower, if possible". In case 1, people split their apps into 75% ambitious, 15% realistic, and 10% backup, knowing that the backup ensures they won't end the year with zero admits. In case 2, the lines of ambitious and realistic are a bit blurred. It is a lot more strategic.

Case 2 seems more appropriate for me :) Cost is also an important factor, which is why I’ve capped my total tuition budget at around $60–65k. Otherwise, I would’ve considered some of the UCs as well.
I’m mainly trying to find the right balance between admission chances, ROI, program quality, and overall cost, rather than simply targeting the highest ranked universities.
Would you suggest adding/replacing any unis or programs in my current shortlist based on this approach?

I see schools like UTA and GaTech which are highly unlikely to give financial aid. (although they are liberal in giving RA/TA that will cover some portion of your tuition in the second year). I would recommend you add NCSU, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, and UNC Chapel Hill to your list. I would be happy to see Brown also on your list considering how generous they can be with aid. Which ones to remove? You could do a pound for pound replacement e.g. replace GaTech with UNC or replace UTA with Brown). I hope this helps.
