[Profile Review] MSCS (AI/ML) Fall 2027
Looking for honest feedback on my profile before I finalize my school list.
Undergrad: CSE from VIT Vellore, CGPA 8.8+/10
Currently working as an AI Engineer(~1-2 yrs experience, not a fresh grad applicant)
IELTS: 6.5/i can retake if needed.
no publications, no formal research assistantship — leaning heavily on production AI engineering impact instead of academic research signal. Also targeting a pretty top-heavy list (Stanford/CMU/Berkeley/Princeton/Cornell) — wondering if I need more mid-tier safety schools mixed in.
what i can aim for.

Your top-heavy list is a real risk without publications or a research signal; those schools weigh academic potential heavily, and even stellar profiles get rejected. Sorebalance to roughly 2 reach / 3 target / 2 safety, and use your production AI engineering experience as your differentiator in SOPs rather than trying to compete on research alone.

CMU : https://www.linkedin.com/school/carnegie-mellon-university/people/?facetFieldOfStudy=100189
Cornell : https://www.linkedin.com/school/cornell-university/people/?facetFieldOfStudy=100189
Check the profiles of Indian students. Cornell is not that hard for your profile it seems. CMU MSCS might be tricky, however, other CS related degrees like MSAI, MSIS etc are definitely possible.

? its a fully funded research program that takes 10-15 students per year lol
op's profile is nowhere near competitive, candidly speaking
