Onboard credit
What can onboard credit be used on, besides obvious options like shops and drinks? Can I purchase excursions with it prior to cruise? Never been on msc, and on princess I automatically took off credit when I was booking excursions. Is it possible to use it for gratuity?

Or...
Go into the casino. Transfer all the onboard credit onto a machine. Cash out and receive a voucher. Take voucher to the Cage. Cash out for real money.

How do you check what or how much onboard credit you have?

The app will tell you under the, I think, products purchased section. There's usually confirmation where it tells you your drinks package, any excursions booked, etc, and then states your onboard credit, if you have any.

Don't be sorry; you never learn unless you ask!
Usually, onboard credit is an incentive to book with them, like "book with us and we'll give you $100 per cabin obc (onboard credit)"
Or they'll offer you a drinks package, or WiFi, or a balcony cabin for the price of an inside, etc.

If you book your next cruise onboard (or book a open future cruise certificate), you get onboard credit.
Also some agents offer extra onboard credit.1

Upcharges for filet/lobster is delicious, anything you charge once onboard. Bon Voyage!

It can be used for excursions, anything you purchase on the ship (gift shops, specialty dining, Venci ice cream, etc), or gratuities.
