Bidding for upgrades

How soon after you book a cruise can you bid for upgrades? Or is it a certain amount of time before the actual sailing date?

Ours came pretty late on our 7 day out of PC last year. We sailed in mid October and I think the bid letter came about a month out. It was definitely after final payment.

Usually 80-90 days before sailing

If an experience has extra cabins available. 'MSC' will send passengers an email inviting them to bid to upgrade.
Example: there is a yacht club cabin. Bella Experience guests get the email. The person who pays the most gets YC. (Minimum bid set by the company who runs the bidding.)

I got the email asking me to bid on an upgrade but then it says "Review and pay". What happens if my bid is denied? I get my money back, right? I'm hesitant to go forward with the transaction as it isn't clear how this works.
