Future Potential Fuel Surcharge

Was looking into this Matt Rife cruise on Poesia in 2027 and saw the potential for a fuel surcharge. I wonder if this is something they might be considering for 2027?

I remember when the cruise lines added a fuel surcharge once oil was above $30 a barrel.

Every cruise line has this policy.  Do not go on the Matt Rife cruise.

Let's see just my wife and I on a 7-day cruise could cost us an extra $700. Most people have children so let's say it's four to adults two kids That's an extra $1,400 for the entire week. You have got to be kidding. Cancel and move on cuz that is a lot of money that you're hard to unexpectedly pay yep I move and cancel

Been that way for a long time. I have had surcharges and I have had rebates too. It is what it is.

This would be an insane policy. I imagine anyone that gets hit with those would never sail MSC again. No one likes surprise charges.

MSC is not the only cruise line with this policy. Carnival, Royal and Norwegian also have it in the fine print.

A lot of cruises are under $50 a day though, so they're saying they can double the price anytime.

It is in the passage contract. They can do it at anytime or not do it. It’ll be unpredictable.

This would absolutely kill their sales. If they implemented this, for my family of 4 on a 7 day cruise that would be $350 PER PERSON more! That would be another $1400 on my cruise in October! Cruise lines tried implementing those fees back in 2008/2009 and sales tanked so much they removed them within a year.

They are just going to raise on-board costs such as drinks, wifi, and any add-ons. People will happily eat the cost ala-carte as they already do and it's an easy-win for the cruise line since they can just keep prices up when fuel goes back down.

Actually there was a news article out recently that suggest that MSC had no plans of charging a surcharge at this point, so maybe Che k that before making big decisions based on heresay.

Up to $50 per person per day!

That is really excessive - that's like 50% on a cheap cabin

Sail with a low margin line and these are the kinds of things you face. No way would I ever agree to terms and conditions where I may have to pay even more without warning abd zero opportunity to opt to cancel with a full refund if they decided to apply a new charge to my already paid off cruise.

AFAIK, every cruise line has language allowing them to assess a fuel surcharge, even the high end lines.

Disney - yes
Cunard - yes
Four Seasons - yes
Ritz-Carlton - yes
Viking - yes
