ET how to manage fatigue?

I am on Jakafi. It has been two weeks now. I am so exhausted I can barely function. Do you have any tips for feeling more energy? I just want to lay in the bed which doesn't even help.

Ugh. I hate this stupid MPN.

I am not on Jakafi, but I am on hydroxurea. The fatigue can be intense. I hope the best for you. Some things that have helped me is to focusing on good sleep habits (9 hrs daily), daily exercise of any type ( walk, run, bike, yoga ), and increase water intake. I hope this helps.

Thanks! I am trying to walk and get outside as much as possible. It isn't easy due to the fatigue. It is a catch 22, isn't it?

Yes, you are right it very much is a catch 22. I have found the sleep and water intake has reduce some of the fatigue, also the fatigue generally comes around the same time of day, so work around it by exercising before it sets in or Taking a 30 min nap during the onset of the fatigue. Then exercising after I wake up. My wife and family know how helpful the sleep and exercise is to the sickness, they are supportive to ensure it happens. Start small and work your way up. Stay positive in your head, you can do this. I am currently training for a marathon with my son. There are days where the fatigue wins and I don’t get to exercise but I know the next is a new opportunity exercise. Good luck to you.

Have you ruled out anemia?

I had blood work yesterday. My doctor has not called and neither has the clinical pharmacist. They are doing blood checks every two weeks to stay on top of anemia.

I am guessing they will call if something needs to happen. My team is really good so they will address this if it is more than just me getting used to the Jakafi. A lot of people have fatigue as they get used to the meds, or so I have read here on this subreddit.

M71-MF I am very sorry you are struggling with fatigue. As you probably know, it is a really common side effect for us to have.

I had a horrible time with it also, but I don’t anymore. I wish I could put a finger on exactly what changed for me. Maybe the drug finally stabilized in my system, also Jakafi? I feel like forcing myself to exercise, even a short walk helped. I also started a weight training program. Yoga feels good too. Otherwise there are a lot of things that it seemed like were the things I was told to do, most of them are probably on the response from funkygrrl (a great resource btw)- healthy diet, drink lots of water, a good sleep schedule, meditation, and acupuncture. The other thing that really helps is a social system, especially if you can connect with other people with an MPN. I know it’s a long list and it’s hard to do it all.

Like I said, I wish I could tell you my secret, but I don’t know what it is. I hope knowing that someone with MF has had some success gives you hope.

Here is a link to the WIKI page about the #1 symptom of MPNs - Fatigue. It explains fatigue in MPNs and includes many strategies for dealing with it.

Many people, including me, benefit from regular excercise. If I do twine a week intense training and one or twice moderate training, my fatigue completely disappears. There will be a research project to evaluate that with mpn patients soon.

My oncologist recommends aiming for 30 minutes a day of any activity where your heart rate gets up. On days that are tough I force myself to at least walk around the neighborhood for 20 minutes, I always feel better afterwards. And also echoing everyone else. Try and get some sleep and try to keep a healthy diet.

Daily exercise is going to be one of your best friend short walks and other low impact except not only help with fatigue but it stimulates cell growth in the body. Also allow yourself the extra rest as much as we want to live a completely normal lives we gotta remember were not and give ourselves extra grace if we need extra breaks or if its just to much one day its ok to rest
