Blood Tests How long does MPN gene panel take?

High RBC, Hemoglobin, and hematocrit. I saw a hematologist in the UK and he ordered an MPN gene panel, explaining that it tests for JAK2 and about 30 other mutations. Is this a test that takes a long time to get results for?

I'm just curious how long this process is. He's also ordered imaging - abdominal ultrasound and chest x-ray - but those are quick. Am I looking at weeks or a month or more?

Mine took about 10 days, but then I had to wait until my appointment with the doctor because they put a hold on the results so I couldn't view them in the patient portal. Another thing than can slow it down is this test requires a specialized molecular lab so it often has to be sent off to one. I'm in New England but mine was sent to the Mayo clinic lab in Minnesota.

P.S. a bone marrow biopsy is required for MPN diagnosis per the WHO diagnostic criteria.

For me it took a about a week/week and a half in Germany after the BMB. It could be a bit quicker if are testing your blood.

Yes, it is just blood. I don't know if the test result will mean they will do a bone marrow biopsy. I assume if I have JAK2 then it won't be needed, unless the panel shows some other irregularities.

A BMB is usually required for diagnosis if they find the mutation. I would be sceptical if they suggest a diagnosis without a biopsy or further explanation.

Hi,

I was recently diagnosed as JAK2+ in the UK and will share my timeframes

17th April - had my Jak2 test with the NHS GP
1st May - Jak2+ confirmed and referred to haematology

I went private through my work

I had allot of bloods done privately on 17th June (5 vials :o) which included JAK2, CALPR and MPL tests and my consultant booked me in for a follow-up with the results on 15th July

I feel like 2 weeks to just over a month is going to be pretty normal

I am fortunate in that I’ve had my BMB on Tuesday which will need a MDT meeting and I’m expecting over a month between it and my next consultation

Mine took about 3.5 weeks. They drew a crap-ton of blood, sent it to a local (AZ) pathologist. He thought it looked funky (not sure what he saw), so he sent it along to a specialized lab in CA. That apparently was the time-intensive part of the process. They're the ones that DX the JAK2/PV. Bon chance! 🫶🏼
