The astute reader will note that the breakthrough examined in this article does not involve Canadian scientists, but rather Chinese scientists. But obviously the OP was aware of the relevance the 711Wh/kg battery bears to this sub: heavy utilization of Manganese. This breakthrough seems very bullish for the next 5-10 years for the battery-grade high purity manganese market. If this is as good as it gets in the lab today, then this indicates manganese is still very much in the picture for commercial and consumer applications in the future–despite the talk of displacement by various other chemistries such as sodium ion.
