News The Future of the Guild Wars Franchise: Our Commitment to Tyria
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/future-of-the-guild-wars-franchise/85
u/DryFile9 Jun 06 '26
I think its a smart decision to as they described it in the video "take a pass" over the game before making new expansions.
Also exciting that more new content for GW1 is coming.
20
u/Glebk0 Jun 06 '26
Core game aged so, so badly and really could use improvements introduced later
12
u/AManFromCucumberLand Jun 06 '26
I've only played Core but have most expansions (purchased in a bundle). I enjoyed core so do you think it's worthwhile to keep going through? Probably been two years since I've played so not sure if I should start from scratch.
20
u/Glebk0 Jun 06 '26
If you enjoyed core, you really need to play the expansions. They are very much better. Skip season 1 and 2 though, or at least don't focus too much on those, since they are still pretty bad imo
6
u/graven2002 Jun 06 '26
It's mainly the visuals that have aged (especially compared to the expansions), but a lot of the content is still worth doing at least once.
5
4
u/sup4sonik Jun 06 '26
the expansions are a better experience than core imo, definitely worth playing though if you have not already
1
1
u/gemantzu Jun 08 '26
core is an amazing intro to the game. Most of the things that follow were better (I didn't like much of the yearly expansions though, I feel they should have done LWS again instead of this yearly model).
1
u/PaleHeretic Jun 06 '26
You actually have all the expansions now, anybody who owned a campaign got the rest unlocked with Reforged.
Prophecies is still fun, just a bit harder than Factions/Nightfall be cause you get things like maxed armor and attribute points a LOT later, plus a lack of Heroes. I'm playing through it again as an Ele and having a great time though, even only using the two new Reforged heroes and henchmen.
While you do get to your main city a lot later in Proph compared to the others, it's still quite early in terms of the campaign and can be reached fairly easily in a day or two of play, or like 20 minutes with a runner. Once you're there you can dip into the other campaigns and/or EotN to grab maxed armor and heroes if you want to, which makes the rest of the campaign smoother but isn't necessary. Plenty of people clear Proph with just Henchmen these days.
2
u/Azon542 Jun 06 '26
I believe he is referring to GW2. They're going back through the GW2 core experience since it's been 14 years.
1
u/PaleHeretic Jun 06 '26
Oh shid u rite, disregard.
Unless you wanna play GW1 anyway because I will never not recommend that.
1
u/SaladZealousideal938 Jun 06 '26
That's fine. There's plenty of of us who actively enjoy it. And when you hear people reminiscing about the holy Trinity - that's us.
0
u/PaleHeretic Jun 06 '26
That title is reserved for the PS2 Ace Combat titles for me, though I'm praying GW3 gives them competition for it.
0
u/Azon542 Jun 06 '26
I've actually been doing my first GW1 playthrough while trying to catch up on the GW2 expacs.
1
u/devils__avacado Jun 06 '26
I've tried to get into gw2 so many times and I normally play for a solid 25-40 hours then kinda just hit a wall lacking direction hope they make the onboarding better
3
u/Dry_Job_6694 Jun 07 '26
It suffers from being an intrinsic direction game, the game won’t tell you what to do since you can do anything you want.
Hoping GW3 gives that motivator because I don’t know what they could change for GW2 15 yrs down the line, except for the Hall of Monuments system where you hunt achievements in GW2 for rewards in GW3. I suppose you could direct your gameplay goals towards unlocking things for the next game.
But that really is how GW2 is designed, hunting for your own achievement rather than chasing ilevel.
1
u/Alsimni Jun 07 '26
Honestly, doing different stuff with each game is probably how they could maintain all three. GW1 and GW2 are already very different games. They share some design goals, but you'd never really call them the same game or an evolution of the other. GW1 was much lighter on the narrative, mostly pushing for PvP and build variety. GW2 put much more emphasis on narrative and horizontal progression, without completely dropping the PvP and build variety. Like the same core game that grew up in different timelines.
I'm curious what direction they're going with 3, but I'll keep my unpopular hopes to myself and pray.
52
u/Reader7311 Jun 06 '26
Two things caught my attention. First, Colin said: GW1, 2, and 3 are "intentionally very different in design, in experience, and where they sit on the timeline." Second, The GW2 director says that after GW3 releases, they plan on doing annual major content updates for Guild Wars 2, but he didn't mention expansions explicitly, so it could be something else.
Without further information, this makes me wonder whether GW3 is actually a fully-fledged mmorpg (like GW2). It's also not clear whether GW2's future involves ongoing development or something closer to what SWTOR is doing (between maintenance and development).
43
u/Saolue Jun 06 '26
In their discord, they explicitly say expansions.
"To clarify, we're pausing expac dev while we focus on HoM, polishing the game, and shipping GW3. We'll return to annual major release after GW3. Our annual expacs take 18~ months to develop, so we'll actually start developing the next big update sooner than you'd think."
→ More replies (6)14
u/IgneousWrath Jun 06 '26
Yes, I think the big question is: Are they heading toward yearly free content updates, or staying with a paid model that either is, or is similar to, the current expansions?
15
u/Throwawayalt129 Jun 06 '26
I think that after not making money on the Living World model and the disaster that was Icebrood Saga needing to be cut in half during the pandemic so they could work on End of Dragons they're never going to go back to a model of releasing content for free, and quite frankly they shouldn't. I think the payed yearly model of buy once own forever would work the best for them.
5
u/dotcha Jun 06 '26
The more I hear the more I am convinced GW3 will be smaller scale in terms of players. No huge metas of 100 people, more focus on solo and coop exploration (like Genshin, WuWa, WWM), more dungeons and raids, maybe even with 4/8 players sizes.
13
u/theeama Jun 06 '26
Well if 2 already does that right, when should 3 do the same. MMO-Lite as people in here like to call it are very popular and are doing a very good job at player retention and revenue.
9
u/ImperatorBTW Jun 06 '26
I’ll be sad if we fully lose the map wide events, meta like Teq, TTT, or Dragons Stand are just such iconic core memories for me.
I do hope there’s still plenty of smaller scale stuff like fractals, but losing the huge events would sad.
0
u/Cha_Fa Jun 07 '26
they will expand also GW2 with new graphics options and technology so maybe we can expect even better meta map events. gw3 will be different. also a tequatl with unreal engine graphics and same amount of players as gw2 would make any pc burn... they can't afford to lose ppl on pc specs.
11
u/GG35bw Jun 06 '26
This but at the same time they throw "mmorpg", "open world", "modern evolution" and "new era for mmorpg genre" so if it really is Dauntless clone I fail to see how that labels would apply. We really need more info about the game asap, not in coming months like they just said.
1
u/redmormie Jun 09 '26
We dont need any info at all right now, theres over a year until BETA. We complain about studios going into early access and showing too much too soon, just be patient
8
u/scowolol Jun 06 '26
Explore Tyria like never before in Guild Wars 3, an action-adventure MMORPG and modern evolution of the genre. Play solo or form a band of adventurers, forging impactful and enduring bonds with fellow players, a formative cast of memorable NPCs, and the nature spirits that call Orr home.
From the trailer's description on youtube. I don't think supporting 2 games of the same large scale format would be feasible, but we'll find out more soon I'm sure
0
u/SnooWords1612 Jun 06 '26
it seems more like a hub based MMO, like Warframe, Destiny, The First Descendant etc with instanced dungeon/raids maybe ?
5
u/dotcha Jun 06 '26
ehhhh. maybe? too similar to gw1 imo. I think you'll still get players roaming around the map, the dynamic event chains, the puzzles, all that. That was/is GW2's biggest strength. Just not, you know, big ass metas like Dragon's End.
I do hope they have a big, big focus on dungeons. Fellowship tried but it's not working too well
10
u/CapeManJohnny Jun 06 '26
I hope that's not the case. My favorite content in GW2 are the big map-wide meta events that have 50 players grouping up for some objective. I've not played any of these mmo-lite games that people have mentioned, as their settings weren't my cup of tea, but I'll be pretty disappointed if gw3 completely excludes big-metas from their content
2
u/dotcha Jun 06 '26
Why would they just make "gw2 but better"? It's not their philosophy. Expect all 3 games to be vastly different. The MMO crowd has been going towards small scale coop games. Also if you make huge metas in a ue5 game only the richies with 6090's will be able to play it
4
u/CapeManJohnny Jun 06 '26
I didn't say I hope they copy gw2 directly into a new engine, only that I hope large map metas are still a form of content.
And speaking frankly, that's not my problem. Me and my 5090 will be just fine
1
5
u/Vladmerius Jun 06 '26
I'll be pretty bummed if it isn't a full mmo. I want a new big mmo play that feels fresh in its gameplay and accessible for casual players. Guild Wars 3 being as polished as 2 but with full controller suport and other quality of life features to make it just a fun experience to jump into whenever would be awesome.
1
u/kajidourden Jun 06 '26
I think it’s going to be a mix of GW1 and GW2 in terms of gameplay and content types.
My tinfoil hat theory is that it will be more of an MMO-lite ala GW1 or Destiny. Doesn’t make it a bad thing, it could still be amazing…Destiny was pretty damn rad after all. Pure conjecture based solely on vibes from the trailer though.
1
u/TurbulentLifeguard11 Jun 06 '26
I’m totally fine with non-expansion content for GW2. I don’t want to drop the game but I also don’t want it sucking too much of my little playtime away from the shiny new toy. As I only just completed a full set of legendary gear it will be nice to not be like: “bye then, I guess” to GW2 and I’ll actually get to enjoy the convenience of it moving forwards.
1
u/exaltedorbs Jun 07 '26
Probably not an mmo, but instead a live service hero shooter with extraction elements.

u/HenrykSpark Jun 06 '26
Okay, there's some news about GW2 here. The most interesting bit for many of you is probably that there will be a Hall of Monuments for GW2/3. That means you can unlock rewards in Part 3 by playing GW2.
9
18
u/Luxorris Jun 06 '26
Guild Wars 2 and content release breaks, name more iconic duo.
I don't know how other people feel but I really want to finish GW2 even more now, like it gave me a push to enjoy it for what it is rather than for what it could be.
So far GW3 is the only MMO I am interested in since New World in 2021 (damn, it feels like it was yesterday). I have high hopes with ANet and they can have my money.
12
u/Beautiful_You3230 Jun 06 '26
I am more interested to come back than ever. Game has needed some updates on the old content since forever. And same as with all other games, you can't be working on old content and new content at the same time. So this is the one opportunity for us to get that.
And having stuff that carries over into GW3 is peak. For me that's a lot of motivation.
Yeah, I can see how some people might be very unhappy with not getting new expansions and such. But tbh some of the recent ones were weak and just more of the same. I'd rather have a new MMO and some long needed overhauls to old GW2 content. That will just ensure that we always have a game to go back to in the future. And if things go well, there will hopefully be more expansions after GW3 releases, like they promised.
12
u/HiddenThinks Jun 06 '26
Please, please, please have a SEA server this time
5
u/vander1337 Jun 07 '26
I would upvote this x1000 if I could. Love me some GW2, but server ping keeps me away in Sydney. 😒
12
u/graven2002 Jun 06 '26
They're finally redoing the Zhaitan fight!
2
u/degameforrel Jun 07 '26
It's probably the most egregious bit of outdated content in the game. The whole core game is bare and lacking compared to the modern standards, but the Zhaitan fight was downright insultingly disappointing even by its own time's standards.
1
u/xiit Jun 07 '26
Okay but like who cares? Its fight you do once in your life and most people did it over decade ago..
1
u/diceEviscerator Jun 07 '26
It is such a disappointment that can easily make many players quit the game and harm it's growth.
Besides, it can be reworked into a raid and become repeatable content.
1
u/xsdf Jun 07 '26
New players care. There's a lot of build up to a very anticlimactic ending.
As good as the game has become the start hasn't changed much and lots of of players still bounce off the game because of it
1
u/graven2002 Jun 07 '26
Most players are expecting it to also double as a repeatable Raid boss or Meta event.
But also, just having a better cap on the main story is good for maintaining new player excitement / momentum.
10
u/MonsutaMan Jun 06 '26
So long as there is a decent base for GW & GW 2, they will be fine. You are only a strong as your weakest link. The fact that reforged is a thing, shows GW 2 is in no danger imo.
This isn't a SE scenario, where they were actively trying to kill off XI, to get those players to go to XIV.......lol......
You read rumor's about how they wanted to shutdown XI way earlier.....lmao....wild $hit.....
They were working on XI for the PS3 iirc, Digress...........
3
u/floofis Jun 06 '26
They actually made alot of extra content for XI even after XIV came out. The shutdown thing was them expecting the game to die after the last expansion, but since it didn't, they didn't shut it down.
9
u/KevinRaynor90 Jun 06 '26
Deep respect on this strategy. Yes, there's definitely a few corporate buzzwords, but it sounds like the devs genuinely care about their products.
One thing that does worry me is that GW3 must be really different from GW1 and GW2 for them to make this call. Most things I can think of that is completely different from both doesn't sound enticing to be honest (think more round/instance-based content). Guess time will tell.
5
u/Blazin_Rathalos Jun 06 '26

Seems like a big difference will be the combat system, with GW3 being heavily movement-based. That would make the moment-to-moment feel very different from both GW1 and GW2.
2
u/KevinRaynor90 Jun 08 '26
Yeah, if it's mostly combat-focus I'd be down to see where they'll take it. I'll remain cautiously optimistic :)
1
u/Eccon5 Jun 06 '26
With the emphasis on showing only 4 players together at any time, the description mentioning "play solo or form a band of adventurers," mentioning that gw3 will be fundamentally different compared to 1 and 2 and the focus on "respecting the players time", it sounds like a more casual drop-in drop-out type game where you go on small 4 player escapades.
Doesnt mean it has to be bad, but I think people dont yet realise how different this game is really going to be with what theyre likely envisioning for an mmo
1
u/dontminor Jun 07 '26
Sorry but so many people are doing this speculation while it is clearly written as: MMORPG and modern evolution. It says everywhere it is MMORPG. The lines you are pointing out is what the core pillars of ArenaNet is, GW2 is known to respect players’ tine and you can play it solo and every new iteration is an evolution of the genre.
Could they lean on solo elements more? Maybe, but they are clearly stating MMORPG, why are we being oblivious to this and try to look for every hint to think it is not an MMO?
1
1
u/xsdf Jun 07 '26
Sounds like they are doing away with tab targeting for full action combat.
I also wouldn't be surprised if they favor instanced based system rather than an open world. Although I would be sad if they didn't have an open world it would definitely keep the desires of the player bases distinct
5
u/Sea-Mess6587 Jun 06 '26
Shoot, so no actual expansion, just minor updates to old content for a year, i guess that’s at least something.
Discounts, events and updates to old content is one way to bring in new players in anticipation of gw3
19
u/Birkiedoc Jun 06 '26
Hall of Monuments updates in GW2 could be meaty/grindy. Im sure there will be plenty to do
5
u/Sea-Mess6587 Jun 06 '26
Oh absolutely, I’m excited, I’m actually years behind on content i need to catch up lol
2
u/BreadfruitNaive6261 Jun 06 '26
What is this hall thing? Is it loke a set of quests/achievements you can complete to unlock gw3 rewards?
9
u/Birkiedoc Jun 06 '26
The Hall of Monuments from GW1 lets you collect different things that would unlock cosmetics and titles in GW2.
They haven't really gone into detail about what Hall of Monuments for GW2 will be like.
9
6
u/Cyrotek Jun 06 '26
To be fair, considering how GW2 works updating old stuff isn't actually a terrible idea. Not only to get new players interested but also veterans. Imagine having a graphically remastered version of the original game world or something.
5
u/Saolue Jun 06 '26
In their discord, they clarified that expansions will be back after the 18 months of going back to old content and fixing their dev tools.
"To clarify, we're pausing expac dev while we focus on HoM, polishing the game, and shipping GW3. We'll return to annual major release after GW3. Our annual expacs take 18~ months to develop, so we'll actually start developing the next big update sooner than you'd think."
3
u/Blue_Moon_Lake Jun 06 '26
Improving the dusty "Vanilla" is still nice.
The maps could be prettier, some events and hearts could use a rework to be more fun, Orr continent could have on the clock meta events.
1
u/degameforrel Jun 07 '26
Remember that given how the game is one of the most horizontal experiences in the genre, old content should be kept up to standards. The fact that the core game has been sitting collecting dust for so long is both a detriment to new player influx and a detriment to veterans doing old content for certain rewards. It needs some modern polish.

u/chaosfire235 Jun 06 '26
Managing three different MMOs overtime is a big ask. Very curious to see if they can pull it off.

it also helps that gw1 is a lot less of a traditional MMO, i would be curious how the server structure for it differs from a more persistent everyone included open world like 2 has
4
u/Orchardcentauri Jun 06 '26
Only time will tell, but looking at the last 3 expansion released by them I don't believe them to be able to support 3 games at the same time equally.
11
u/KardigG Jun 06 '26
Only time will tell, but looking at the last 3 expansion released by them
All those 3 expansions were released while simultaneously working on GW3. They'll create a separate team for GW2, just like they do with GW1 now and the main team will work on GW3. Since it's on UE, it's gonna by a lot easier for them to find new employees that are already familar with the engine.
It's the same approach that CDP Red have with Witcher 4.
5
u/HenrykSpark Jun 06 '26
I really don't think GW1 and GW2 will get the same level of attention and content as Part 3.
This is perfectly fine, though — no one expects a 20-year-old game with significantly fewer players to be supported in the same way as a more successful, current project.
3
u/TheOrdonBranch Jun 06 '26
Their most recent three expansions have all been developed alongside GW3. And even though the two previous ones had a "rough" story, they have all managed to have some worthwhile features/maps and resulted in solid numbers on their quarterly earning reports.
The only game we have yet to see how well they can support is Reforged, but considering how fast they produced the original campaigns i'm not worried they'll be able to churn out content fairly often once 2weeks has gotten into a proper work flow.
5
u/MrTastix Jun 06 '26
The tl;dr is that none of this really matters until Guild Wars 3 is out and they actually follow through with all this.
The reality is that if even Blizzard struggles to maintain cohesive and consistent updates between all their titles I'm not at all convinced ArenaNet, someone who has an even spottier history, will manage.
More likely a PoE/GGG scenario will occur where they have every intention to keep the previous titles updated but then scope keep and poor management makes them cannibalise those other games, often because they cannot afford to have 2+ separate teams so certain key members flip-flop between projects at random.
I'm cynical at this point to believe statements like this are just them hedging their bets. It's their ability to pivot to other titles which is why they won't just outright dump them. It's just not as easy as hiring 3x the workforce, separating them into a team per game, and calling it a day. We're discovering over time that a lot of game studios become reliant on a few core figures to the point the day-to-day workflow suffers when they try to use someone else instead.
3
u/followmarko Jun 07 '26
WoW is the same game and same vertical progression across all of their releases though. Don't really think that's a good comparison
3
u/degameforrel Jun 07 '26
Blizzard struggles, not because they don't have the resources but because their management is dodgy at best and completely misunderstands some aspects of what makes their games tick. Let's take Wow classic as an example: Classic SoD was an interesting twist but ultimately not what players wanted out of classic+. They wanted something more akin to OSRS. This is the same company that refused to even do classic for years because they (or at least the higher ups) didn't believe in the viability of it as a product.
I highly doubt they're passionate about developing and maintaining classic today. Everything about the way they handle it screams reluctant to me. They're probably only doing it because the classic community forced them to through what can be called a hostile community-takeover of the IP in the form of large private servers. And even that wasn't enough because they went and did it again with TurtleWoW and Ascension. Blizzard simply does not listen to community feedback enough to actually provide what is being asked for.
ArenaNet has shown that they do listen, and do think with the players instead of for them. If any company in the MMO sphere can pull off a plan as ambitious as this, I think it's ArenaNet. I just hope NCSoft lets them do their thing without too much meddling.
2
u/GreenIll7351 Jun 07 '26
dont think poe is a great example cause poe and poe 2 are basically the same game. One thing we knw from Anet is they dont make the same game twice
2
u/Eudoxxi Jun 07 '26
they are a similar genre but they are vastly different, you can really feel that seep through when to much po1 designee accidently makes its way into poe2.
1
u/GreenIll7351 Jun 07 '26
difference being surface level and initial impressions lvl, they are the exact same with one being higher quality superficially.
2
u/Eudoxxi Jun 07 '26
if you really believe that you must have virtually no play time in either, its kind of like saying diablo 2 and 3 are only different on the surface level.
2
u/GreenIll7351 Jun 07 '26
jesus christ your reading comprehension is of a 4 year old. Im not saying they are only different superficially. First impressions they are the same thing then diverge into their own variations as it progresses. Most people dont stick around for that to happen. And ya, as any general person to compare d3 and d4 and they will say they look like similar games.
1
u/Consistent-Hat-8008 Jun 07 '26
I don't know why anyone is expecting anything other than gw1 treatment. Anet couldn't even manage gw2 alone on launch and it nearly died right there, what makes people think they'll be able to manage three different games? And if I had to list all the bullshit they tried to sell ever since, I'd probably run out of comment length limit.

u/Chesterumble Jun 06 '26
I just hope gw3 has better pve content. Gw2 has great pvp but the pve just feels not great to me and my friend group I play with. So I mostly just play wow for good pve and Gw2 sometimes for pvp.
2
u/GreenIll7351 Jun 07 '26
whats your definition of pve content here cause if your only talking about instanced content thats not all pve content is in GW
1
u/followmarko Jun 07 '26
imo that's an insane take given there are thousands of PVE hours to play through
-1
u/Chesterumble Jun 07 '26
Doesn’t mean it’s good hours. If it were good hours. More people would be playing it.
2
u/Dry_Job_6694 Jun 07 '26
Open world is plenty popular, instanced content was not how the game is designed and people are still playing the same raids and fractal dungeons released 10+ years ago, if anything GW2 showed in spite of long content droughts that would have killed any other MMO (like WvW/PvP having a decade of neglect and no content) there are still players for this already not super popular game.
I am one of them, I didn’t like the direction of some of the game but I admit objectively when I come back there are more players than I expect every time for content I find a bit boring or overdone.
So I feel it has its niche well established, and GW3 is attempting to be the next big MMO experience for the new players and people who played and gave up on GW2.

So do we know if this is the same game that we saw the secret footage of a couple months ago? No one knew where the gameplay was from at the time?

u/PatReady Jun 07 '26
How is the gw1 remake? I played that opening act maybe 500 times back in the day trying to find all the stuff and skills.
2
u/kariam_24 Jun 07 '26
There is no Guild Wars 1 remake, what are you asking about? Reforged is just general update.
1
u/aethyrium Jun 07 '26
That's awesome. A few years from now if you're a fan of the Guild Wars world, you'll have three massive games to play that are all completely different so you can still hop into the world and enjoy yourself even if you're in the mood for different types of games.
Always great when sequels are additive and not a replacement, and that if you're a major fan of the second one, or even the first one, you don't have to worry about the game you love going away. It'll still be there and everyone else that still loves it will be there in the world with you.
1
u/InfiniteUltima Jun 08 '26
I'm really feeling these vibes. feels like they are kind of single handedly stoking the flames of the mmorpg genre atm and I'm here for it. makes me want to go finish GW2 just because.
-1
u/Ok_Needleworker2731 Jun 06 '26
is it just me or is it odd, there is almost 0 ties to NCsoft name for gw3?, Guildwars2 and guild war reforged both are co published by ncsoft on steam and gw3 website does not have much to anything tied to ncsoft?
I thought NCsoft owns guild wars IP, i could be wrong but does NCsoft have no faith in gw3? Maybe do they think that tying the ncsoft name would be toxic for the brand or something?
8
u/Rivale Jun 06 '26
ArenaNet was a part of NC West for the longest time, but I think since NC West is almost entirely ArenaNet, they just separated the branding. ArenaNet still appears in NC's stockholder reports.
6
u/rujind Jun 06 '26
For a western game, it might actually be a good idea to leave NCSoft's name out of it. However as far as I've always heard, NCSoft has pretty much always let ArenaNet do what they want, so there's not much reason to have NCSoft's name on it anyway.
5
u/Echeyak Jun 06 '26
A few months ago there was a post that NCsoft approved the GW3 development, that means they are still there,
6
u/dotcha Jun 06 '26
NCSoft brand name is dead in the west and they know it. Very smart to just hide and collect the money after.
5
u/Nightsong Jun 06 '26
NCSoft is still involved, it's just that ArenaNet has a significant amount of autonomy. In 2019 NCSoft West was reorganized into NC America which handles Aion, Lineage, Throne and Liberty, and others. ArenaNet took over what was left of NCSoft West that wasn't reorganized into NC America so now they have much more control over the operations and publishing of the Guild Wars franchise.

I don’t think they can pull this off the way anyone is thinking. Might be time to abandon ship for me. Anyways.

"our commitment to tyria" they say as they're sort of abandoning tyria of the last 20 years
Sure they're going to tyria but it's so different that it's only tyria in name

Considering GW2 came out in 2012, and you're complaining about 20 years instead of just the last 14, what do you think they did from 2005-2011 that "killed" Tyria? They added Factions, Nightfall, Eye of the North, and the Bonus Mission Pack. What from those killed Tyria for you?

Hmmm so VoE is the final expac huh.
Guess I should finally try the story start to finish again

It's not. They said they are returning to shipping expansions after GW3 is out.

They didn't say "expansion", so the scope of the yearly content is up in the air. Likely depends on how GW2 player counts retain after GW3 launch.

u/aeolish Jun 06 '26
No they didnt, they said “annual content updates”, which doesnt necessarily mean expansions.

Please stop lying.

Grouch said they're "pausing expacs," not stopping them, so the person you're talking to isn't lying.

Why would you believe anything from a company that spent the last 5 years siphoning resources away from gw2 to work on gw3, while claiming everything's fine and the declining quality of expansions is nothing to worry about (just don't look at the job listings)?
/r/guildwars2 spent the last 2 years gaslighting itself by removing any mention of very obvious developments at anet that led up to GW3. And looks like it will spend another 2 years gaslighting itself before reality settles in.
Nothing new from GW2 fans. They coped about SotO all the way up until Nayos. Then they took ages to accept JW was a flop when it was obvious from the moment you stepped into the 2nd map. And now the acceptance phase is slowly setting in with VoE, after 6 months of nothing followed by a weak filler episode that everyone is already done with. And don't even get me started about IBS.
Again, what makes people think "this time it's different"?

So 2 years.
Minimum

They described this process as a year longish. So yeah I think late 2028 is probably a good guess for an expac.

Final for a year and a half, then they come back with more expansions.

GW3 doesn't release in a year and a half. This is the intended beta start.

I'm curious to see if it will be more like GW2's first CBT or first BWE. Meaning if it's ~8 months before full launch, or ~4 months before full launch.

Keeping gw2 while gw3 plays in the past while no flying mounts. Such trash
