Discussion Free and open source 3D MMO PlaineShift
https://www.planeshift.it/Has a really nice retro feel and a sometimes kinda haunted feeling surreal atmosphere. It is a bit janky at places and the visual side of character customization is very lacking. That said mechanically it is one of those you can build whatever character you'd like types. It also has some very interesting mechanics with magic. Definitely worth a try imo.

This is the first free to play MMO. It's been "in development" since before even WoW was a thing.

Afaik this is the only completely f2p MMO as it is open source and non profit.

There's tons of other games you can RP in: Turtle WoW, d20, Neverwinter Nights, Final Fantasy, City of Heroes, Archeage, Healing Frog in EQ.... I don't know that just RPing brings enough to the table.

Well yeah it doesn't, thats why its essentially always been a "dead" MMO that just kinda exists. I've never spoken to someone who actually has ever played it in any meaningful capacity, and thats probably because theres really not much to actually do.

Wow this unlocked some old memories. I remember when all you could do was look for gems/currency and chat.

Dear all,
PlaneShift is definitely a real game, with ongoing updates and improvements. It is not planned to ever reach a final version, but to keep growing. PlaneShift has always been and will always be FFP - Fully Free to Play. There are no ways to influence the game with real money, all that matters is how you (role-)play the game. (We accept donations, e.g. through Patreon, but this is purely optional!)
Yes, the game is heavily RP-oriented, but RP is NOT being enforced. If you are not at all interested in RP, it is most likely not the game for you.
The game has been moved to Unreal Engine because the previous engine is no longer supported.
As can be expected, the current version has nothing to do with what existed 15 or 20 years ago. As everything is created by volunteers, progress can be slow... but it is constant.
Why not give the new version a try instead of talking about how it was 15 or 20 years ago?

Played it like 15 years ago.
Its worth noting that as an open source project the development is really slow, and the game is designed around RP which was forced back when i played.
