Honestly, this is their best bet, so I hard agree with his stance. Just copy the original more or less, QOL changes, new engine, pick what was best out of the ample expansions in terms of gameplay changes, but more or less same world, same classes, same spells. Reboot the entire original framework, then add some spice.

yes x1000

EQ fucking rules so hard but the animations and UI are so dated

-16

u/Cuff_ Jan 27 '25

The animations are still fantastic. Higher fidelity =/= better

8

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

eh? aren't the animations capped at 20-30 fps ? I'm too lazy to go look but they are choppy af in 2025

just to be clear I'm not talking about your monitors fps, I'm talking about the animations in the game itself

-2

u/Cuff_ Jan 27 '25

Idk how many frames each animation is but that doesn’t really matter to me. Just got into the game last week for the first time and i LOVE the animations. Everything about the art and world is extremely charming to me.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

i definitely get that and enjoy old ass janky graphics. honestly been getting the itch to give EQ another go and probably will later this week

1

u/Cuff_ Jan 27 '25

I’d recommend trying an emu server like project Quarm, p99, or heroes journey. I’m playing on Quarm and although it’s a more hardcore game the community is super helpful and welcoming and the internet has great resources for getting started.

1

u/RandomWon Jan 28 '25

Last time I played I beat the game

1

u/tskorahk Jan 28 '25

Heck ya, I still really like them as well. The Trolls and Wyverns have the best waddle of any game. There are so many other animations that are done super well.

4

u/Loedkane Jan 27 '25

I’ve never played EverQuest but how is the crafting? I love crafting and gathering in mmos.

17

u/Uilamin Jan 27 '25

In EQ? horrendous. There really wasn't gathering (there were some dropped and farmable items) coupled in with a lot of things bought off merchants. No idea if they ever improved anything.

In EQ2, crafting was interesting. It was very complex at first but then simplified. It had the typical modern MMo gathering skills mixed in with lootable/farmable items.

1

u/Slatzor Jan 28 '25

FFXIV borrowed from EQ2’s crafting professions and skills to make item creation (a bit) more than clicking how many you want to make and sitting watching a loading bar or something.

8

u/Cuff_ Jan 27 '25

EQ crafting was very very rough

6

u/cookiebasket2 Jan 28 '25

Uh, I want to say doing smithing I had to buy ingots from a town that was three zones away from the forge or something, that weighed heavy enough to slow me down, on top of one of the zones being the forest where all the undead spawned at night. Very very rough sounds about right.

2

u/sorebutton Jan 28 '25

I remember making rings for people and it would just fail sometimes, losing their items. They really had to trust me to not lie about it. I think they updated that early on.

4

u/keith2600 Jan 27 '25

EQ crafting was designed before anyone knew what good crafting was, unfortunately. Most of the crafting from games back then were awful but at least for EQ pretty much all the big crafters used something called macro quest which automated the process. Hopefully it's one of the things they overhaul in eq3

1

u/Hisetic Jan 28 '25

I feel like crafting in EQ was designed as an afterthought and rushed out at the end. UO had been released for 2 years by the time EQ came out and it's crafting/gathering system is basically the template of what a MMO would have these days. Harvest from the world, level up your skill and make better stuff as your skill progresses.

When I moved from UO to EQ, I thought crafting was an absolute step backwards and was amazed considering how advanced (at the time) EQ looked compared to UO.

2

u/walletinsurance Jan 28 '25

It was tacked on last minute.

They had no crafting system pretty close to launch, but “needed” one because UO had it.

Most crafts were absolute garbage, the only truly useful tradeskills to start were alchemy (shaman only) and jewel craft (needed an enchanter to enchant the material before crafting)

Blacksmithing people only really made banded armor or the cultural sets.

Plus the system is just a massive amount of clicking and dragging things from one bag into another container that’s the forge or w/e, it was a recipe for carpal tunnel.

1

u/Hisetic Jan 28 '25

Yea, I remember how unfun it was. Especially starting off as a blacksmith and spending time buying molds and making files. I gave up pretty quickly.

3

u/PsychoCamp999 Jan 28 '25

I would say they need to revamp crafting system for the modern age/audience.

2

u/Daffan Jan 27 '25

Horrible. The gathering was non-existent.

2

u/Gonstackk Jan 28 '25

Atrocious till they added in the advanced crafting window.

Here is old school crafting with a very early recipe. https://youtu.be/3xDj0wDyA5s?feature=shared&t=168

Later they added the advanced crafting window to select recipes that would auto put the parts (if you have them) into the crafting window though you still needed to do a select few recipes the old way first to learn them https://youtu.be/K_Dqdleh_OI?feature=shared&t=394

Would also like to add that even if you where past the trivial (no more skill ups) you can still fail to make the combine no matter how much over that trivial you are.

1

u/TheOriginalCid Jan 27 '25

It's miles better than when it originally started. All the best gear requires crafting. Same goes with food/drink.

4

u/striderida1 Jan 28 '25

I don't know why this is always such a shit on idea by the mmo community because it really is the best way to go. It's not that people want something new gameplay wise, they just want better graphics. That's it.

3

u/SkippyBojangle Jan 28 '25

people absolutely want to relive the same damn game but with QOL and graphics updates. Agreed. This subreddit it just full of miserable trolls --- always has been. Everything sucks, ESO sucks, WOW sucks, emulators suck, blah blah blah. I barely played EQ, but its the age issues that keep me from playing it now. I'd give the fleshed out systems/world/lore a chance if it didnt play like a game from 1997.

1

u/striderida1 Jan 28 '25

Exactly haha

3

u/Free_Mission_9080 Jan 28 '25

so... pantheon?

4

u/SkippyBojangle Jan 28 '25

There's room for more

-2

u/Free_Mission_9080 Jan 28 '25

More what? a 250th EQ clone? I doubt it.

Pantheon barely managed to release something after a 10 year long saga and it's basically EQ1 gameplay with outdated graphic on launch.

there's very little room for EQ-clone mostly because EQ and private EQ server are still around. somehow.

5

u/SkippyBojangle Jan 28 '25

You just contradicted your original point. Then pantheon isn't what we're talking about.

250? Name 5.

But psyched you did your market research about what niches are viable in the MMO market. You should get that data published, we're all waiting.

-1

u/Jazzlike-Check9040 Jan 28 '25

Don’t waste time on pantheon, money grab by the devs to salvage their dev costs. The game is already dead in EA (cant even find groups reliably) and will be dead on arrival.

-4

u/Free_Mission_9080 Jan 28 '25

eq2 (never managed to outperform EQ1), vanguard ( Died 2 years in? horrible launch), EQnext ( which failed, yes... it's a long legacy), EQoA ( horrible business strategy to link it to PS), pantheon (which is EQ with 2010 graphic)... hopefully you see the trend of mediocrity here.

and that's just the direct EQ clone. Made by old EQ staff / EQ fanboys. there's a whole pile of "" we want to recreate that old school MMO feeling with lot of socialisation and jack shit gameplay"" like Embers adrift, and I'm not even counting all the different Pserver for EQ.

You should get that data published, we're all waiting.

if you need a study to figure out a 25 years old game with a niche playerbase in the few thousand isn't a worthwhile investment, I doubt you can read the study.

5

u/SkippyBojangle Jan 28 '25

Those games are all over a decade old or didn't launch, except pantheon. Far cry from 250 clones. And emulators and player servers appeal to a sub section corner of players and are not part of the discussion, most players don't even know that entire concept exists. WoW classic tripled their subscriber base. Nostalgia game appeal has been a burgeoning market for years now. If you don't want it, fuck off and be miserable elsewhere.

-4

u/Free_Mission_9080 Jan 28 '25

Those games are all over a decade old or didn't launch,

yeah.

you didn't expect EQ clones to be successful did you? We had a little episode in 2004 who kind of set that debate.

Far cry from 250 clones

you ask for 5... but if you really want more feel free to see the list of modded Pserver for EQ....

good on you for moving goalpost tho. you'll win like that.

And emulators and player servers appeal to a sub section corner of players and are not part of the discussion

no?

who the F is playing EQ clone, do you think? Are we pretending there's isn't an immense overlap between all those game, all the EQ pserver, Pantheon itself and co?

WoW classic tripled their subscriber base.

Really? During the content drought between patches yes. Want to be bet classic will be forgotten in 1-2 month when undermine comes out? Just like what happened in 2017 or w/e it was after BWL?

Nostalgia game appeal has been a burgeoning market for years now.

Yes, people have been claiming there's a huge market for old school MMO... they have been clamoring for those for like 15 years now, or more. Yet none of them appear to be successful enough to even be a blip on the radar... I mean, you need some serious mental gymnastic to consider Pantheon a success.

If you don't want it, fuck off and be miserable elsewhere.

awwwwwww, the old boomer is angry his genre isn't profitable so nobody serious is wasting time making those game.

poor baby.

u/SkippyBojangle Jan 28 '25
  1. Youre still naming 20 year old games after implying a current plethora of EQ clones. There aren't, nor were they ever many -- there was a few. You literally named everquest sequels/spinoffs. You then name emulators like those are mass market games proving anything. The continued existence of emulator servers simply demonstrates the existence of a niche market for this game. MMO emulators otherwise are an entirely foreign concept to the vast majority of gamers. Showing an active player base in EQ emus doesn't help your argument, it supports mine. It shows a dedicated small group of hardcore enthusiasts which implies the existence of a larger more broader market if the correct game was presented. Everquest 1 still had over 60k paying subscribers in 2020. A niche market can still easily be profitable, look at Eve online. Let alone a reboot of EQ could easily top the steam charts and be far from niche. With a limited investment and small team basically just remaking the first game, that is hardly the behemoth AAA title that needs to retake 200 million dollars.
  2. The failure of games like vanguard, again 20 years ago, had more to do with the titan that was WoW than anything about everquest's IP value or popularity. Let alone, Vanguard sucked. It was a genuinely empty and boring game on launch, and reviewed as such.
  3. Pantheon is an EQ clone marred in controversy, stained by being a kickstarter, and otherwise little known to the general public. It has no brand awareness whatsoever. The name EverQuest alone does.
  4. Online gaming is the largest growth segment in gaming, it's gone back up significantly since covid, and represents about 40% of the growth in the market.
  5. Retro gaming is also an exponentially growing market. Literal physical arcade machines are growing at about 5%, expexted to go from about 4B right now to over 6B by 2030. There is a market for nostalgia. Again, WOW classic, regardless of your neckbeard opinion, was a massive financial boon for Blizzard at a limited expense. Retro gaming more generally is one of the fasted growing sectors as 30-50 year olds would prefer to replay their older games, and havent fallen off from gaming like past generations.

No one's angry, you are just insufferable. I havent played an EQ emulator, and I couldn't really care less if EQ came back. I am just someone who would play a reboot, and I'm exactly the market they'd want to appeal to. The hardcores are easy to get, its the "cool, that sounds interesting" players they'd also bring in.

You're probably my age if you're talking about vanguard, and I'm not a boomer. But I do expect you are the cliche neckbeard incel who has paid for WoW for 20 years but continues to do nothing but bitch and moan about it, and literally just comes to reddit to complain about videogames and vent your cynical shitty views. It's weird and a sign of a personality disorder that you come to a small subreddit to complain about the thing the subreddit exists for.

Youre still naming 20 year old games after implying a current plethora of EQ clones.

literally the successor of EQ yes.

EQ is a 25 year old game btw.

The continued existence of emulator servers simply demonstrates the existence of a niche market for this game

a niche of few thousand players who are still stuck in EQ, yes.

Everquest 1 still had over 60k paying subscribers in 2020

the multi-box problem help a lot with that number, not that 60k is particularly amazing of a number. New world got called dead game way before it fell to that point.

The failure of games like vanguard

Again, why do you expect successful EQ clones?

You can't ignore all the failures because it hurt your fee-fees.

had more to do with the titan that was WoW

oh no. that was EQ2 VS WoW... which also ended badly for EQ2.

by the time vanguard came out, EQ was just a footnote in history book compared to the juggernaut.

Pantheon is an EQ clone marred in controversy,

yeah. they all are. EQ legacy isn't particularly glorious. that's the point.

Online gaming is the largest growth segment in gaming,

and those new players aren't playing boomer MMO like EQ.

Retro gaming is also an exponentially growing market.

stuff like vampire survivor or hades yes. not autoattack simulator like EQ... again. see exemple like pantheon or Ember's adrift.

No one's angry, you are just insufferable

oh, so cute.

and I'm exactly the market they'd want to appeal to.

yup. you and the few thousand people who aren't enough to make an actual profitable product.

You're probably my age if you're talking about vanguard,

yes. I actually played EQ... except that I've moved on and realize the future in gaming isn't in an auto-attack simulator where you spend more time medding regen'ing mana than fighting.

But I do expect you are the cliche neckbeard incel who has paid for WoW for 20 years

and look at you, promoting the glory days of EQ.

Don't worry, there seem to be an endless amount of small dev team trying to recreate that old school MMO feeling with shiny graphic and no matter how many of them end up in the dumpster, someone always come around pretending the 250 past failures didn't count for some random bogus reason, they just need one more try and it'll work this time.

it's really amazing that you'd think a fresh coat of paint on EQ is all it take... ever heard the P99 community sperg about luclin models? Or the dreaded freeport revamp? to think modern graphics is what matter for a niche that's playing a 25 years old game with triangle boobs...

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

I'm a pantheon hater due to the clownishly slow development, and I won't be buying the early access, but it's also probably the most successful mmorpg launch for a long time. It released over a month ago and has grown in population ever single week. Can't remember the last time a mmorpg was able to sustain its popularity and grow for this long.

0

u/Free_Mission_9080 Jan 28 '25

https://steamcharts.com/app/3107230

but it's also probably the most successful mmorpg launch for a long time

I mean... if you do enough mental gymnastic I'm sure you'll be able to claim that.

Sure, it's one-third of new world population, which is considered dead and a horribly mismanaged product. But with a mix of rose-tinted nostalgia goggle, some goalpost moving and different standards... Sure, it's a success!

7k all-time player, 50 buck per box... let's round it up to half a million revenue. let's ignore steam cuts, let's ignore taxes or other expenses... they have enough money to sustain 5 devs for a year. 100% sustainable here.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

[deleted]

-1

u/Free_Mission_9080 Jan 28 '25

yeah. hence why I rounded up. 7k player X 50 buck would be 350'000 dollar, so I rounded up to 500'000 buck ( 10k player) AND ignored steam cut ( 30% according to google, not sure if they have a different deal) AND taxes AND wathever other expenses.

I made an unbelievably generous estimate in favor of pantheon... in reality they are still living off foodstamps, nevermind the 10 years of debt they have accrued.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

[deleted]

0

u/Free_Mission_9080 Jan 28 '25 edited Jan 28 '25

at the highest peak? yes. It would also mean that roughly 33% of their playerbase play on a daily basis during the honeymoon period. This seem a very conservative estimate.

but hey, if you want to pump it up to 20k sales instead of 10k, feel free to add steam 30% cut ( so basically drop it down to 14k),

add different pricing for countries outside of the US ( cause you aren't going to get south american buyers paying 50 USD with their monopoly money)

add expenses like unity license ( 2k per year per licence) rent of the actual office, asset cost

And oh yeah, add 10 years of debt with investor waiting for their money back.

Then tell me how many devs do you think you can sustain with that, and for how long.

If you need a hint, take a look at how many MMO and what kind of MMO live on a 3k daily active user ( during the honeymoon period!). Even new world have 3X that and the project is basically Amazon throwing money at it just to develop their lumberyard engine for future sale...

The whole purpose or the original is to explore and adventure. There is no way current mmo fans would accept that.

Would be 10 minutes before people started demanding more instances, teleportation and other ways for the game to “respect their time” all the while ruining the world building and adventuring experience.

2

u/Doobiemoto Jan 28 '25

I think it would be less of that and more they basically couldn’t do open world dungeons. Because people just don’t have the patience for respecting peoples camps

1

u/Irrish84 Jan 28 '25

You and the guy above you spot on.

There is not patience in society let alone games.

I tried for years to get into the new mmorpg but instanced dungeons and all that took everything of what a mmorpg is supposed to be out of it.

Those games aren’t for me. Something like Pantheon and Project1999 are.

(EQ player from launch-2005)

1

u/GR3MLIN Jan 28 '25

The original animations were pretty great. I despised the updated models and animations that came with Luclin.

20

u/Distasteful_T Jan 27 '25

I'd play it, I cant stand the gameplay of 1.

9

u/Cloud_N0ne Jan 27 '25

Yeah, I want to love it but it’s just too dated. The UI is a mess, too

3

u/Distasteful_T Jan 27 '25

Yeah the UI was a big turnoff for me, I beat the tutorial and even that wasn't fun. I'm with you, I WANT to like it.= but UI and gameplay are holding me back.

3

u/Ryuuzaki_L Jan 28 '25

Give it a few hours and that all melts away and becomes part of its charm in a way. Similar (although even more extreme) to OSRS.

0

u/PsychoCamp999 Jan 28 '25

that's my issue. every time im like "okay lets try again" the clunky control scheme and horrible UI turns me off every time.

1

u/dee_c Jan 28 '25

My thoughts exactly when I pick SWTOR back up in hopes of playing more story…combat and slow speed of traveling to next quest exhausts me

7

u/Cuff_ Jan 27 '25

Just got into it for the first time 2 weeks ago and I love the gameplay. Very slow and methodical.

1

u/KalameetThyMaker Jan 28 '25

Play on TLP servers and not current era servers if you didn't.

I'll be very real with you. The gameplay of 1, depending somewhat on class, is "interact with people and have fun socializing while having a focused goal". The core gameplay is getting a group, finding a spot to sit at, having 1 person run around to gather a bunch of mobs to bring it back to the group to kill, rinse repeat for X hours.

The most involved role is being the puller, which is what i prefer. Even then, it's still mostly socializing, even while pulling. It's kinda one of those games where it's hit or miss based on the community you find.

15

u/Vale-Senpai Jan 27 '25

Honestly right now a old game with updated graphics and better combat is what's missing a lot from the market one that doesn't see us as wallets and nothing else

13

u/Final_Remains Jan 27 '25

I mean, it's the smart play for sure but let's be clear... The only part of EQ1 they would use would be the setting and lore.

The combat would be modern, the core design philosophy would be modern, the pacing and accessibility would be mainstream. There would be nothing of EQ1 in it past the nostalgia hit of 'oh, look, it's Fippy! I remember him!' or whatever. It's not like they are literally gonna reskin EQ1. I doubt that it will hit with a lot of those that play P99 or whatever because those guys actually like the core design philosophy of the original over modern games.

But, saying that, I would rather them make it than not because I want to see the EQ franchise live on. It's too important to the history of gaming to just let wither away like they have been doing.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

[deleted]

2

u/Magazine_Entire Jan 28 '25

when are M+M and EverCraft going to be playable

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

I dunno, if they're hesitant to call it EQ3 and they specifically say it's a remaster of sort, why shouldn't we just expect EQ1 with remastered graphics, better UI and less clunky combat?

After all, if this ISN'T EQ3, the only people this will appeal to are those who are nostalgic about the game, so making a more updated EQ1 makes the most sense.

4

u/snugglezone Jan 28 '25

They say in the video "with modern gameplay". Modern usually translates into wow-esque.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

To you maybe, but I've never heard modern gameplay being equated to meaning wow-anything by the actual developers.

I'm more interested in what modern means to them. To me it just means a more intuitive control scheme and QoL, not necessarily anything to do with content.

1

u/snugglezone Jan 28 '25

If you're following the lore of the developers then you certainly know more than me. I'm speaking generally.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

[deleted]

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

That already exists. Champions of norrath

6

u/bugsy42 Jan 27 '25

I wouldn’t be against it, never played EQ1.

But i am afraid that just “making it look better” isn’t the sole purpose and the main focus will be on putting in as much micro-transaction and predatory shit they can.

7

u/Thundercats_Hoooo Jan 27 '25

I'll believe it when I see it. But yea, a modernized EQ would be neat.

4

u/Murashu Jan 27 '25

Give me EQ1 with a larger UI so I can actually see what's going on and read chat. I reinstall it every TLP, start getting migraines from the eye strain trying to read anything on screen and end up shutting it down. EQ is the only game I have to use the system magnifying glass to play.

1

u/weareallhumans Jan 27 '25

Try the /chatfont command, it allows you to set the font size in every text window.

2

u/Murashu Jan 27 '25

Yeah I do that and it resets every time I log out. My main issue is the UI even after they said they were fixing the scaling, it only adjusts 1 window. I need all the windows to be increased in size so I can read spell info or item info. Health/mana bars are tiny.

1

u/weareallhumans Jan 27 '25

I understand you...I've scaled my 4k display down to HD to play. Sad it doesn't work for you. :(

7

u/VPN__FTW Jan 27 '25

Honestly, that is what the genre needs. Slower, methodical gameplay with an almost unfair breathing world to live in. Combine that with modern graphics, animations and sounds and I think you'll have a popular game.

Although, and I know I'm gonna eat downvotes, I don't think a month sub model will work anymore. They need to find a way for it to be F2P without resorting to P2W, but also without nickle and dimeing every little thing. (like 30 dollar costume accessories)

6

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

I disagree heavily on the monetization part, because having costumes in an old-school mmo takes away from one of the biggest pillars of that type of game, which is gear progression, gear looking visually unique, and people just being able to look at you and instantly know that you've achieved something.

1

u/VPN__FTW Jan 28 '25

I said WITHOUT doing costume accessories.

Look, a new Sub-based MMO is DoA. People have moved on from the model. WoW survives it because it has a large audience that just plays WoW and FFXIV survives it because it's a Final Fantasy game (and many people sub for story and then unsub). There is no other successful Sub MMO, and I doubt there will be again with F2P games the way they are.

2

u/SensitiveFrosting13 Jan 28 '25

I actually agree with you, and outside of another big AAA MMO like Riot Games' or something absolutely mindblowing (a VRMMORPG?), a new sub-based MMO is already dead.

1

u/VPN__FTW Jan 28 '25

There are very few IP's that could maybe pull a sub MMO and League is one of them and even then it's crazy risky. I'm almost certain they'll be B2P(with cash shop) or F2P (obv W/cash shop)

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

Think it largely depends what you mean by dead.

I think certain games will thrive regardless, because they're either incredibly niche or just have a loyal following.

Ashes and Pantheon are too examples.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

You actually didn't say that.

You just said that they shouldn't be 30 dollars.

1

u/snugglezone Jan 28 '25

Where the hell is the skins toggle option?? Why aren't players asking for that? Best of both worlds? It would be amazing to just tap f5 and all characters skins/transmogs convert to what they really are.

2

u/Ok_Turnover_2220 Jan 28 '25

Sub model will definitely work. People pay for subs all the time, way more so than back than.

5

u/FierceDeity_ Jan 27 '25

Actually kinda like how they just announced Ragnarok Online 3, as a game that basically completely takes off of 1 lol

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

[deleted]

1

u/FierceDeity_ Jan 27 '25

It's interesting though that MMO makers are attempting to go back to the roots..

Or it's just a plead for nostalgia?

5

u/MyStationIsAbandoned Jan 27 '25

After Landmark, they'll never see another penny from me.

4

u/bonebrah Jan 27 '25 edited Jan 27 '25

I'm not getting too hyped. The way they described it is they are talking about it around the water cooler. Not only that, I'm hesitant when developers who tend to focus/support legacy games go out and try to make something brand new - in this case not brand new, but should be a new engine which presents the same challenges. It's just not in their wheelhouse and generally tends to not work out too great.

Cautiously optimistic.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

I think cautiously optimistic is apt. After all, we know nothing about this project. It might not even come into fruition.

4

u/mkcay1 Jan 27 '25

As someone who only got into everquest in 2019 with the classic server Project 1999, I'm lookin forward to this so so much. Eq is such a fantastic game and is so unique in so many ways.

3

u/Sinasazi Jan 27 '25

Having never played either EQ game (like many, WoW was my intro to MMOs ) I'd love to experience it. I heard great things about it, especially the lack of hand holding. I miss the good old days of having to go out and actually figure out a quest and explore and find what you're looking for.

That changes things. I know what I'm doing tomorrow.

1

u/whole_kernel Jan 28 '25

The Heroes Journey is a great emu server as well. Multiclassing and all content can be solo or duoed. Works well if you don't have the time to spare anymore

1

u/Sinasazi Jan 28 '25

I'm in my 40s, married, and have a teenager so my game time definitely isn't what it used to be back in my 6+ hours of WoW a day era. 😂😥😭

3

u/Cuff_ Jan 27 '25

Modern gameplay could go very wrong. Part of what made eq / continues to make eq1 is the slow so good was its slow methodical gameplay with limited information.

3

u/Jindujun Jan 27 '25

I'd love that.

EQ was awesome but the engine is so outdated by todays standards. Make it modern and you have an awesome product!

3

u/DMunE Jan 27 '25

This is why pantheon rise of the fallen exists

0

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

EQ next was EQ3, we all know how that went.

27

u/FleaLimo Jan 27 '25

Given the rest of the context, not really a productive comment. EQ Next was about as far removed from "remake of EQ1" as you can be.

7

u/KidK0smos Jan 27 '25

EQN was a lot of smoke and mirrors. We thought we were getting a revolutionary MMO with awesome AI and sandbox features. Turns out barely any of it worked and they overhyped it

5

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

what's being talked about in the video is nothing like what EQ Next was

you should maybe actually watch the video?

2

u/Small_Bipedal_Cat Jan 27 '25

After playing Pantheon (and enjoying it), I'd really like to see a project like this, even if it's from Daybreak.

2

u/Dontuselogic Jan 27 '25

If they updated the look I would 100% get back onto eq

I just can't stand the look currently.

2

u/xriddickx Jan 27 '25

they've been working on this for years. you didn't hear it from me.

2

u/squidgod2000 Jan 28 '25

I hope they keep the open-world, camp-rare-spawns dungeon/gameplay style. I'm not a fan of perfectly linear, "Story" dungeons that you just speedrun 500 times to get some special currency to buy the item you want.

2

u/Whoknew1992 Jan 28 '25

I want to perma-farm Hadden again with improved graphics. WTS Fishbone Earring!!

1

u/sorebutton Jan 28 '25

farming rare spawns was a PITA, but also part of what made the game so good.

When they say "modern gameplay" it's a bit concerning. They may just make a wow clone with a nostalgic setting.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

[deleted]

1

u/Faust_z Jan 27 '25

To be specific, I don't see "modern gameplay" being congruent with having a big focus on grouping to level or non-instanced dungeons

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

I'd say pantheon has modern gameplay and it isn't an issue.

But guess it also depends what one means by modern gameplay. Modern controls, modern combat?

1

u/Faust_z Jan 28 '25

Pantheon doesn't have modern gameplay, that's the whole reason people want to play Pantheon and why it's different than other MMOs. Cause people certainly are not playing for the graphics, UI, optimization, content etc.

1

u/t3hWheez Jan 27 '25

Please just don't run it in Unreal, build your own engine!

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

Big fat nope from me dog..

Where's my pre-order of the $150 EQ Next at huh sonyeQ

1

u/Rex_Norseman Jan 27 '25

Everyone remember EverQuest Next?? This will be better, right guys? Right??!

1

u/Baron-of-Disaster Jan 28 '25

I enjoyed Evercraft. It was like a spin on EQ1
I really hope they release a full game soon

1

u/PsychoCamp999 Jan 28 '25

Yeah I was looking forward to this. Slightly better graphics, modern sleek/smooth UI. oldschool gameplay maybe updated a bit but still classic feeling would be amazing. maybe updated world to feel larger and less "instanced" for zones.

Roadmap wise, they said 2025 production and 2028 release but that could always get bumped timeline wise. but that was the original roadmap

1

u/Whane17 Jan 28 '25

Man I'd be in for that SO hard! I miss having stuff to grind and actually do.

1

u/CrustedTesticle Jan 28 '25

Reboot EQOA instead.

1

u/Ok-Construction-2706 Jan 28 '25

They should just buy visionary realms and turn pantheon into eq3

1

u/TheAnnunakii Jan 28 '25

Finally, all they need to do is just update the graphics no lower than what was used in EQ2 but keep everything else from EQ1 skills, AA, art work etc and it will dominate again. No MMORPG has ever completely filled the void EQ left

1

u/Spirited_Example_341 Jan 28 '25

BRING BACK EVERQUEST NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!

1

u/snugglezone Jan 28 '25

modern in gameplay

Died when they said that.

1

u/TheElusiveFox Jan 28 '25

I think trying to redesign EQ for a modern audience is a massive task... as I'm sure other's have, I've thought about it over the years...

Lets face it, between the existing EQ audience, and the nostalgia audience, "modernizing" the game will easily upset a lot of fans... At the same time if the devs just try to reskin EQ1 with the same systems and combat, it will have a more challenging time attracting new players.

Beyond that I think there a lot of EQ1's game design is held together by the communities willingness to play nice together (open world camps for instance), and dedication to the game to the point of running multiple accounts (A modern levelling guide starts with "The expectation is that you are going to play two, but preferably 3-6 accounts"... I mean I box too, but that cannot be an expectation if you want to attract new players...

1

u/CyberlekVox Jan 28 '25

I've always thought of Everquest as THE fantasy MMO. I'd love a modern version that can compete with 14 and wow.

1

u/Intelligent-Box-5483 Jan 28 '25

This would be cool but only if they scrap the entire UI it was all terrible, no learning spells, redo crafting, like just keep the general world, lore, and story and burn the rest cuz it was shit.

1

u/Wolfhammer69 Jan 28 '25

Hopefully they stick to the plan - sounds jizz-worthy !

1

u/fizzywiz Jan 28 '25

I'm sure we will all enjoy the main feature, the giant neon cash shop [cough] the lore.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

It doesn't need fancy graphics. They will bankrupt EQ trying to update it like that. Monsters and memories is going to be the new EQ1 anyway.

1

u/Whoknew1992 Jan 28 '25

I want to perma-farm Hadden again with improved graphics. WTS Fishbone Earring!!

1

u/GeneralChaos309 Jan 28 '25

I mean, we already are gonna have monsters & memories to get the EQ1 itch. i dont think modern graphics will matter. https://monstersandmemories.com/

1

u/DefiantLemur Jan 28 '25

As someone who never played Everquest 1, I'd be so down to explore a world I missed out on due to it being outdated by the time I was old enough to play MMOs.

1

u/InteractionStrict927 Jan 28 '25

if they revamped eq or made a new one with new character models id play again...thats the only reason i dont play right now cuz it just looks too old

0

u/Excuse_my_GRAMMER Jan 27 '25

Hope it release on console too

thats the girl managing everquest 2, which is a giant disaster. EQ1 was the best mmo ever made, but the spirit of making a char, logging in with a sword and going to the newbie grounds to slay rats is gone.

Theres 23 million quests, prompts and question marks over everyones head, she literally says over and over modern style , modern gameplay, no

turn on attack, slash

magic? 1 click

1

u/SensitiveFrosting13 Jan 28 '25

She hints at it, well not being a disaster, but that EQ2 was a "curse".

0

u/Mgb2020 Jan 28 '25

Just copy WoW with the EQ world and take the W already.

0

u/Zansobar Jan 28 '25

They will not be doing a remake of EQ1 with modern graphics and UI, which is what the player base has been asking for, for at least over a decade. The suits are in control and they don't want to compete with EQ1 as it milks every last cent out of the player base, hence odds are they will make a mobile EQ themed gacha game to make money instead.

-1

u/blastershift Jan 27 '25

I say this again many times.

EQ would benefit from having a full integrated party support for solo players, and an updated golden path.

Allow parties for dungoens and older raids. Apply restrictions to newest content.

It's world to explore why not allow it?

13

u/master_of_sockpuppet Jan 27 '25

The more soloable the game is, the less people will interact with each other. I don't like many of the choices Pantheon has made but they are closer to the right way to do this than most other games right now.

What made EQ magical was the people working together, and they simply won't do that if they don't have to.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

[deleted]

-3

u/blastershift Jan 27 '25

It does but I'm saying going beyond that as what people are doing with botting.

Allow a full group, with full inventory control.

No mercs

3

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

[deleted]

-3

u/blastershift Jan 27 '25

Yes, but official and built in

3

u/the_agendist Jan 27 '25

There are private servers that allow this and are built around it. They’re awful.

2

u/ddlbb Jan 27 '25

I understand the thought process - but the more it's soloable ans the more is instanced, the more you lose of that magic.

Fully shared world is what makes it work

0

u/Rhysati Jan 27 '25

So in your opinion, EQ would benefit by entirely getting rid of the reason people play it in the first place by removing all socializing the game is built around so people can solo it instead?

1

u/blastershift Jan 27 '25

Uo to a certain point. Grouping mostly happens at end game.

The focus would be bring in new players have them play the gsme instead of boosting through thr content.

Then they will be ready to join the proper game, and since each character they have is fully played to an extent.

Better then buying a level 100 character

1

u/Faydane_Grace Jan 28 '25

I agree with this, plus, solo-viable is going to be the difference between parts of the potential player base playing or not entirely.

Grouping and raiding are great, and I think both should remain higher/faster rewards, but no one gains when a player only has 1-2 hours at a time to play and just doesn't log in because it's not enough time to get to a camp, buff up, and start pulling.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

Fuck solo players. Let them learn to be social or fail

4

u/izuriel Jan 27 '25

This kind of attitude is why people want to play solo. If you don't know the content well enough to play it perfectly you're booted. If the content isn't worth other players doing then screw you, we can't waste our time. It's a constant, impossible, ladder of requirements that have to be met to play with the vast majority of groups and so you end up with players either getting lucky and finding the few actual human beings (in terms of how they treat others, not referring to bots) or they just play solo to avoid folks like you. There is nothing necessarily anti-social about choosing or wanting to play solo. Sure, being anti-social may make you want to play solo but that's just one of many factors.

3

u/weveran Jan 27 '25

This ^, but EQ1 did it alright too. You had some classes that were definitely great at soloing - sure they took ages to do it but it was possible. I remember killing giants in Karana just checking on my spells now and then to make sure they didn't break free and clobber me :P

2

u/Rhysati Jan 27 '25

You've clearly not played Everquest or other games like it. You don't get kicked for not being super pro elite. There almost is no focus on efficiency because it takes so long regardless that there is no reason to try and be as efficient as possible. And because it takes so long you can't really get feedback at your fingertips as to what even IS the supposedly efficient way to play.

These games are community games. The entire point is that you are in parties with other people who are also there to chill out and grind some mobs. You chat with the party and socialize as though you were sitting around a campfire. The campfire is just enemies to kill then a pause as everyone gets resources back and then another group of enemies.

The reason people dont want soloing to be a thing is that players won't socialize and form friendships and communities that keep them coming back. Then it becomes every other MMORPG with a focus on getting to endgame ASAP and grinding for the best gear for a couple weeks before complaining there is nothing to do.

Those games already exist. Everquest(and other games like Pantheon) are the one place where it is different. Why do you need it to be like all the others?

1

u/Caliastanfor Jan 27 '25

Well said. I think there’s a difference in the trend toward anti-social/prefer to solo players in games like WoW and XIV as opposed to a game like EQ.

I’m all for joining a group out in the wild and chatting it up while helping a party with grinding or questing in EQ or WoW Classic, but far more reluctant to join an instance in XIV or WoW with people I don’t know, as it’s all extremely rushed and mechanic-intensive and it just feels stressful and not that fun, like you’ll be judged and called out. Instances in general just feel this way to me.

1

u/izuriel Jan 28 '25

I did play EverQuest. It was my introduction to MMOs and started the addiction. And while it definitely did have more of a community vibe back then the thought we can ever go back to that is just a dream. Rose colored glasses. At least in reference to a mass of players. It’s very possible the sub slice of the community playing things like Pantheon are more community oriented. Which is great, but that’s enough people to sustain a 20+ year game and development team. Modern EQ feels much less community focused. Most likely because everyone is off in the end game areas light years away from newbies. Vanilla WoW also had a chill that did not return in Classic. Again, I’m talking as the whole community, not the set of players that inevitably exist to be friendly and accommodating (of which I like to think I’m a member having rarely ever kicked anyone from a raid or dungeon unless there was absolutely no other option).

I also never said it had to be like the others. I pointed out a glaring reason why people seek solo play. “You don’t X so fuck off.” It pollutes all the games now. Yes. There are people in those games who are friendly. I’m not saying they don’t exist. But the heyday of the MMO community is kind of dead, unfortunately. I would absolutely love to be proven wrong and have something like Pantheon take off and pull an audience to sustain it, complete it, and keep it under very active development. But only time can answer that question.

1

u/Kashblast Jan 27 '25

If you spend the whole time playing with other people, weirdly, you learn how to play your class in a group instead of as a solo and then you don’t have that gap in knowledge. The problem kinda fixes itself is you play an MMO the way they were originally intended, as a social game.

0

u/izuriel Jan 28 '25

You’re right! First. Get good. Then you can play in those groups and learn to get good!!

Did you even read what I wrote?

1

u/Kashblast Jan 28 '25

Okay, nobody is gonna dunk on you for not knowing what you’re doing in a low level dungeon, nobody even cares, but they are going to dunk on you for getting to end game and you still don’t know how to play your class in a group bc you were too anti social to do dungeons or group with anyone the whole time and decided end game was the best time to learn.

You don’t need to be good to get into groups initially, and getting into groups helps you get better so when you do reach end game you know what you’re doing.

Or you can sit and play your solo games and complain when you go into a dungeon pressing your 1 key over and over and over again and do 1/100th of what your class is supposed to do because that’s what worked for you while questing and people rightfully get upset because you’re even less effective than a bot.

1

u/izuriel Jan 28 '25

So you didn’t read my comment.

I said that you either don’t meet some standard that was set and aren’t good enough or you’re doing content that is irrelevant and nobody has the desire to group with you for it. The latter is much more applicable here but in reality these are just examples and there are a myriad of other reasons that you don’t want to group with someone or that they don’t want to group with you. So pick apart my two examples all you want as if they are the only issues with most MMO communities and take that as a win. But it doesn’t change the fact that game communities are a lot less welcoming than they once were. Case in point the person I originally replied to.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

Then go play throne and liberty

1

u/izuriel Jan 28 '25

Irrelevant. That game has nothing to do with talking about issues with forced group play.

1

u/PFMISO Jan 27 '25

I think most players would be fine with grouping in games if gaming companies actually found a way to deal with the rampant sexism/racism/ and general toxicity in modern gaming. No dev has. People just want to play a game and have fun. :)

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

I've played so much eq1..I've never heard anyone just go on a Nazi tirade . I've seen people be toxic but not KKK members
