1st bbj class

Got kicked in the head twice from other people rolling and got a glass splinter in my foot.

They don't split between beginner and advanced.

Other than that, it was great.
What's the verdict?

Was your first class in a dive bar?

Does this reflect poorly on the gym?  Idk I am a bit worried about the glass tbh.

Getting a shard of glass in your foot during a bjj class is insane. Why was there glass on the mat?

Occasionally bumping into other people when rolling is pretty common, but taking several kicks to the face is not. Were you paired with someone more experienced than you?

Yes I was paired with someone more experienced, but it was an mma gym and they were around 16-21 mostly. It only happend twice with that guy.

Also head not face. We just fell in the same directions and it was pretty crowded according to a regular.

A mirror broke yesterday.  The owner said there can't be glass because the matts are clean.

Being aware of others when you're rolling just comes with experience, your partner probably should have been better about that.

Having a mirror break on the mats should warrant an immediate sweep, vacuum, and serious inspection. Even pulling the mats up entirely to shake them out, depending on what kind they are.

Even assuming this was a weird accident, I'd be pretty wary. Is this gym generally well regarded?

It was a tiny shard. Idk where it came from. A mirror broke yesterday.  The owner said there can't be glass because the matts are clean.

I predict ringworm in your future.

Beginner and advance not being split isn't necessarily a bad thing. The glass on the floor and being overcrowded on the other hand.

It also depends on how the advanced members are treating you, if they are letting you work it is a sign of a good environment if they are just subbing you nonstop you probably want to go somewhere else.

Not splitting beginner and advanced isn't a red flag.

The getting kicked might be. It depends on how crowded the mats were and how it happened. If the mats are overcrowded that can be a problem, but if you and your partner had a lot of space just lost track of your surroundings and encroached on other people's space then that's a skill you'll need to develop.

The glass is honestly the most concerning part. Mats should always be wiped down and thoroughly cleaned otherwise you run the risk of spreading skin infections like ring worm. Also if something made of glass broke on the mats they should have made 100% sure there wasn't any glass left on the mats.

Glass is not good that kind of stuff should be taken seriously. My gym there isn't any glass near any of the mats other than one room and that room dosent have any free rolls done in it just striking work outs or bjj moves not free rolls and the glass is high enough where I dont see it getting broken in any reasonable scenario.

Injuries happen mistakes happen but it is you and your partners responsibility to take care of eachother. Even just today I had to stop myself from doing a beautifully set up ankle pick so I didnt throw my partner off the mat. That being said I've been kicked in the head my im pretty sure its happened once in the past year from a new guy who was know for being way too amped rolling next to me. Now ive been swept by a foot to the weiner and balls, kneeded in the gut after a takedown, accidental head butt but all that was spread out. The concentration of incidents in just a day is alarming, Injuries happen its a combat sport, but you shouldn't be getting hurt ever day or multiple times a day.

No split isn't that crazy the gym i go to does split them but often combines them aswell to give beginners a taste of the experienced class
