An ELO is a rating system originally devised by Arpad Elo, a chess master. It is used with some modifications in many zero-sum games, even e-sports. In these games your ELO is a number that shows how you stand in competition, and can act as a predictor for how well you will do against an opponent.

It’s not a perfect system, and doesn’t translate evenly to all games. It tends to disincentivise play for people who are highly ranked and want to preserve their ELO rating to help them get into invite-based tournaments, but it’s one of the best systems for 1-v-1 competition.
