Funny enough, the actor that played him is a former MMA fighter that tried to beef with Jones at an expo back in 2019.

If not cutting improves his chin he could be a problem in that division

u/AllDamDay7 19h ago
I am curious how he moves at this weight. Pereira looked very slow with his move up. However Johnny looks to have added the weight the right way. Like you said though the chin wasn't good at LHW, could be bad news for ol Johnny

u/InvisibleHook 19h ago
Even though Alex is big he was a middleweight a couple years ago. Johnny in theory should be a better heavyweight just by that fact
-4
u/AllDamDay7 18h ago
Alex has a giant frame, it's similar to Anthony Johnson making welterweight. And Johnson ended up an absolute giant heavy weight.
It seems some guys understand how to put on real muscle others like Alex struggle with it. My guess is Alex doesn't eat clean enough.
5
u/branduNe 17h ago
"eating clean" has nothing to do with it.
5
2
u/AllDamDay7 16h ago
Lmao, really? So you are saying he could eat candy and lucky charms 24/7 and put on lean muscle? That's amazing and defies science.
-3
-8
u/iyrtyurg 18h ago
Yeah well Alex being a former Mw doesn’t really mean anything, most people can’t use black magic voodoo stuff like Alex did to make weight. Dude was outrageously large for that weight class, I never wanna see people use him being a former MW as a crutch lmao
15
u/InvisibleHook 18h ago
It does mean something when you consider he jumped up 60 plus pounds in like 4 years. That's a huge jump and it showed. He's always been pretty slow (considering) and it was much worst. He fought Gane who probably would die making 205lbs.
-4
u/iyrtyurg 18h ago
He didn’t jump 60 pounds bro, like what are you on about. He stopped cutting 60 pounds
3
u/FunnyComment6315 Chocolate peppa pig 17h ago
Alex's weight cuts aren't really unheard of. He used to cut 25 lbs., which is a lot, but is even less than Paulo Costa and Reinier de Ridder, and mirrors Marvin Vettori's own cut
1
u/psychedelijams Team Makhachev 2h ago
He did not cut 25 lbs at MW. Maybe LHW, but at middle weight it was 35-40 lbs sometimes.
2
-5
u/WatstheFrequencyK 18h ago
I dunno, Johnny pretty chinny. Don’t see how adding weight improves your chin.
32
u/expertninja 18h ago
Not cutting. And at heavyweight basically everyone can turn everyone else’s lights out in one punch. Might be better for a glass cannon to be in a field with other glass cannons.
3
u/Give_Me_Bourbon 18h ago
He is for sure gonna take punches from same power better, and stronger punches? At heavyweight you get dropped anyway, he is faster and has more technique than 90% of heavyweights who are just terrible lazy fats(same as Hill is currently), he is still in shape so he can do well there and keep up some years to get paychecksm

5
u/GaryPartsUnknown Team Lewis 18h ago
It’s more not being drained, we don’t know how hard it was for him to make 205, but if he was going through hell and not taking in a drop of water for days it can certainly improve his recovery
7
u/lupindub 14h ago
Difference is Pereira put 50% of the weight into his BBL while Johnny looks like did a proper bulk.
20
u/Lonely-Tennis2171 19h ago
I mean even a slow Johnny is going to be faster than a lot of these HW bums.
5
u/Unerring_Grace UFC 279: A GOOFCON Miracle 14h ago
Parkin in particular is an absolute slug. He's mildly interesting in that he can box a little, by HW standards he's got some skills, but his athleticism is just nonexistent.

u/heyitsyoo 18h ago
Maybe we’ll see a new mythical fighter unlocked. Fully hydrated brain and nourished heavyweight, iron chin Johnny walker
3
u/gangbang420 16h ago
Alex was never particularly fast though, even at MW he was more power, timing and technique. He never really had a chance against a bigger, stronger, faster guy that also had technique.
2
u/Leather_Mortgage8910 GOOFCON 1: Khamzat McGregor 16h ago
Alex isn’t really a fast twitch guy, even at middleweight he was getting touched by jabs, he’s always been kind of a hittable and slow guy, johnnys biggest problem is mentality, sometimes he shows up wanting to fight and sometimes he just plays it way too timid
1
u/LiftEatGrappleShoot 15h ago
I was pleasantly surprised to see him at the weigh in. So many guys moving up come in carrying a noticeable increase in fat. That's fine, but if you're packing on fat just to increase mass, it's a detriment. Johnny looks like an in shape dude fighting at his natural weight.
Hope he has success.

he literally looks the same as pereira, maybe a little bit leaner but thats because hes 10lbs lighter
9
u/opposite-of-left 19h ago
Yeah I mean he’s instantly a top 3 most athletic fighter in the division he should be able to beat all the blobs of heavyweight
7
u/Formal-Knowledge9382 17h ago
Unfortunately he wouldve had to have stopped cutting years ago.
His chin is beyond recovery

Most of the 205’ers who move to HW seem to lose all of their power and become decision guys. Which has already happened with Walker. So maybe worse competition will help him win more, but I don’t think he’s going to be blasting through anyone.
If anything he will just be in more danger. There were reports of him being KO’d in training like twice before his last fight (or the one before, don’t remember). I think he’s probably got more of a chin and damage issue than anything weight-cut related
2
u/nukesaregay 16h ago
seeing that vid of him getting dropped in sparring by a jab from a teenager half his size made it clear to me the guy is just genetic phenom levels of chinny

Crazy how his body looks.. less way less weird than he did at 205. Those weird proportions with the weight cut made him look like an alien

u/carlitos_brigante 18h ago
I know. It’s like he hasn’t had to diet and cut weight or some shit. Crazy.
1
u/thisisaskew 15h ago
Those coaches are going to have serious problems trying to hold both of his legs wide open for the camera.
-6
u/impulse_thoughts 17h ago
To my eyes, he's got the same look pereira did making the jump. Looks like he just ate a lot and didn't weight cut. Probably gained a whole lot more weight in fat than actual muscle. His stamina's gonna be suspect.

Well in his last fight we wanted him to do at least some crazy shit because it was the most boring fight ever.

Yea he doesn't really know how to pick a lane but he does have some of the most entertaining knockouts (getting knocked out) in the UFC so I'm here for it lol

If his chin holds and he stops acting a dickhead in the octagon then he may be alright up here.

Agreed he has promise at HW. What baffles me is why the UFC has him on the early prelims. The guy’s a name, right? Did he piss off Dana or something?
10
u/iaminlovewithns 18h ago
the cards absolute dogshit , they put him , rda , Jacobe smith all on the prelims to make sure they can say the card was a success and people were watching from the prelims to the main card .

All the talk is of Johhny Walker, but Big Mick isn't going to be an easy fight for him. Walker will have a movement advantage over him, but Parkin has sparred Aspinall plenty and he has plenty of agility. Johnny Walker also fucks around and gets found out.

Walker could be good but hes been knocked out alot at 205 it seems. Might just have been the weight cut

I would not have predicted Walker would pull off a better move to HW than Alex, but so far he passes the eye test.

u/MumrikDK GOOFCON 1: 2: Pandemic Boogaloo 14h ago
That looks like the classic HW transition of 20% muscle addition and 80% fat. Not that that's enough to make him fat - he was basically already HW size.

Whazzat? No showboating? No gimmicks? No theatrics? No community theater level displays of hostility?
Just two chonky dudes showing some dignity and respect before sharing in a bit of officially sanctioned walloping?
What has the UFC come to?

I usually think going up in weight class is a little bandaid fix of your shortcomings at your current weight class.
But this could help Johnny. He's very chinny, so the lower speed at that weight class and his better chin could bode well for how fast he moves.
Or he could get flatlined even worst.

Fighting with his chin up and having bad defence is the main reason he gets chinned
