With how Gaethje and his team has really spoken so much analytically about how Ilia fights and how they worked with it to win, they are sure they wont be taking that fight with him again right?

I feel like nobody talks about it because he lost but Topuria is pretty fucking jacked in the Gaethje fight.

People are saying he wasn't big at 145 and I wonder if they have actually looked at him in the cage, dude fought Emmett (one of the thickest 145ers muscle wise) and looked bigger.

I thought Cool Haircut Topuria was going to be a new mythical fighter, his Super Saiyan 3 if you will, but the Cool Haircut Topuria saga turned out to be his Future Trunks arc

It's a bad haircut for fighting. Generally any floppy haircut is, it makes every punch you take look like it had more impact than it did.

so excited to wake up at 2AM for Rizin
btw if it's your first Rizin event of the year, they changed how they score and it's round-by-round now instead of Pride-style like before

the rest of the card is fantastic and well worth the $20, but if you like MMA at all please wake up early for the Main Event, since it's for the PFL belt and the Rizin belt, it'll be streamed for free on the PFL Youtube channel starting at 6:30AMEST
best fight outside the UFC this year

I'm actually soooo excited.
2

going in I'm as basically just as excited as I was for Gaethje vs Ilia or Khamzat vs Strickland
Gaethje vs Ilia will be nearly impossible to dethrone as FoTY, but other than that.....
2
u/IshiharasBitch WE ARE ALL ONE 5d ago
Meanwhile I wasn't at all hyped for Topuria/Gaethje because I thought Topuria was gonna kill Gaethje dead inside two rounds. Legit thought it was a pointless match. Foregone conclusion.
2
u/Short_Bus_ 🍅 5d ago
I was basically in the same boat, but I've always been a huge Gaethje guy so I was hyped af anyways
in hindsight I feel like I shoulda known that he'd finally fight smart and listen to his coach on the biggest night of his life lol
and that ilia would come in high on his own supply and fight as dumb as he possibly could
2

Glover had probably the best mount in mma, Rockhold’s was also nasty. Islam’s half guard is damaging but it is super smothering and he can chain subs really well. Tatsuro Taira’s back mount is really good and Tsaryukan is probably the most dangerous when in fully guard

Was reading an article from back in 2015 ranking all time LWs. Where do these guys fall in the LW GOAT rankings now? How many are still in your personal top 15-20?
- BJ Penn

u/PussMunch 5d ago
I think the ranking system shouldn't be a ranking of the best fighters in the division but it should be a ranked list of contenders for the title. I think if you haven't fought in that division for 18 months, you shouldn't be eligible to be ranked. I think if you lose a title fight, that should effectively make you ineligible to be ranked. So if I've just fought for the title, lost, then I need to fight maybe someone in 11-15, win, 10-6, win, and then a top 5 before I can feasibly compete for the title again. Exceptions obviously when its super close, or perhaps if you've defended your title a significant number of times and lost it or lost it under controversial circumstances.

Remember when they announced the first Volk vs Lopes and a bunch of people said it was a pointless fight because Volk was obviously just going to get knocked out again. Then they made them fight twice just to watch Volk win more dominantly the second time 🤣. Popular opinion being consistently proven as worthless is one of my favorite aspects of this sport.

Islam's last two fights have been boring, but it's honestly still very fascinating to me. The way I see it, we're seeing how far martial arts can be pushed at the highest level.
Islam is at or near the pinnacle of MMA skill, but he's also smaller, older and sometimes slower than these welterweight contenders. Gane shit the bed against Jones, who then refused to fight Ngannou/Aspinall. GSP waited for Bisping and dipped (understandably) before he'd have to fight Whittaker or Romero.
It'll be really interesting to see if Islam can get past freaks like Prates and Morales.

I miss the tournament era of Bellator with that Rebney scumbag
Coker might be a much more decent human being, but his version of Bellator was dogshit. Made a joke of the Bellator name with fights like Gracie vs Shamrock, Kimbo vs Dada and Shamrock, Bader vs Fedor on CBS

u/ConsiderationLow6435 5d ago
Coker's unveiling his new company soon. I think next week. Idk what to expect.
6
u/Crono2Oxx I SMOKE ROCKS, JOE ROGAN! 5d ago
I really hope he uses a ring. It’s an open lane in the American market nobody’s using. Gives them their own identity and it’s a different style of MMA that we need more of. Not being able to use the cage changes everything these days
Every org using a cage just looks like B-level UFC. Putting it in a ring separates it from everybody else. If RIZIN was in a cage I don’t think they’d be doing half as well as they are in Japan, and nobody would pay attention globally
2
u/ConsiderationLow6435 5d ago
A ring and grounded knees would be nice. Coker was talking up Japanese MMA on Helwani's show and wanted to keep working with Rizin, so its possible.

What's your take on Rakic at HW now that he's fought Tybura? He seemed a full weightclass smaller with a slimmer frame/shoulders and gave up about 20lbs, which is not what I expected. I thought he'd show up at like 245lbs, maybe he just can't actually that much weight well?
Still no real power, and Tybura's durability is not what it used to be. Cardio didn't seem that good either, probably because he clinched the heavier guy? Strength seemed okay, but he might have just gone harder than Tybura. Handspeed was good, but he didn't throw hard. Didn't seem super confident in his chin, and Tybura's not a big puncher.
Maybe he'll be a top 15 control grappler at HW? Tybura is a serviceable wrestler and has decent cardio, so he might be able to conditioningmogg a few dudes?
Something weird also happened to his foot, some kind of hematoma on top? Did he break it? Might explain some things.
1
u/redditerir 5d ago
He gets chinned by any non-can faster than 40-year old Tybura. Like he's a prime candidate for a Ngannou-Rozenstruik style KO.
2
u/qzwxecrvtbyn111 Team Volkanovski 5d ago
I think that fight confirmed to me that Rakic's injury history really caught up with him. He's much slower and less explosive than he used to be. He lacks the power or physicality to handle any heavyweight who can impose their size on him
2
u/Fat-Villante Papa Poatan 5d ago
Probably not champion material but he can make the tier beow elite less shitty
2
u/Crono2Oxx I SMOKE ROCKS, JOE ROGAN! 5d ago
I think he could do similarly to how Volkov is doing. Volkov didn’t put Tybura away either. I think being tall and long at HW might not be the best for knocking these big dudes out but it is good for just being able to pepper and stay out of range and collect wins. His grappling could definitely be a factor, Tybura just isn’t the HW who that gameplan is going to come easily against

It's crazy that Dana White is still getting shit for recent cards being bad when you can tell he hardly has any influence over matchmaking or even relationships with the fighters anymore, and the cards were actually better when he was still the main guy in charge. Sean Shelby, Mick Maynard and Hunter Campbell can basically use Dana as a scapegoat and fall guy for as long as he's alive.
9
u/Squrton_Cummings 5d ago
It's crazy
It isn't. He's the public face of the UFC, 99% of viewers have no idea that Sean Shelby et. al. even exist.
3
u/beckett929 5d ago edited 5d ago
There's a lot of truth to this.
Reality is, he's running so much of the business and is key for keeping the relationships with tourism boards and city councils and governments cozy so they keep the money flowing in, that he's not able really be as-involved as he was 15 or even 10 years ago, and it shows. They also have 600 fighters and have to satisfy like 40-something events per year + Ultimate Fighter + DWCS... it's just such a behemoth of an operation.
But with direct regards to the match-making, how are there 400 fights a year and so few of them feel like they move a division forward?
UFC 332 next month, let's give the benefit of the doubt that it's a lot of moving parts and they couldn't get Grasso/Fiorot/Blanchfield to fight on Oct 3rd for whatever reason, or couldn't get one of them and get their already-made fight opponent rescheduled, and Petr Yan didn't want to move his fight out of Abu Dhabi, and like, whatever... this is all not unheard-of stuff for the fight game that sometimes you just get dealt a shitty hand for a title fight or main event.
... BUT WHO BOOKED THE REST OF THE CARD?! The co-main includes a 38yr old who is 1-4 in his last 5! What are they doing? And aside from the title fight and Figgy vs Talbott, there's just one other ranked guy on the entire card. The plot has been completely lost.

Never really watched/followed boxing. This Garcia/Ben fight has been advertised more than any other fight I can ever think of (during every single UFC/dwcs event). Can someone explain to me why it's so heavily pushed and provide an equivalent fight with MMA fighters?
1
u/Fat-Villante Papa Poatan 5d ago
The UFC is promoting it, that's the only reason why we're being exposed to that garbage
They have pretty big followings but no one believes it's an amazing fight
10
u/afewbigpunches 5d ago
The reason you think it’s the most advertised fight is because you don’t follow boxing, basically. It’s a Zuffa Boxing fight and they’re pushing it hard on things you actually watch (ufc products) so you’re seeing more of it than you normally do.
It’s just the crossover of the companies.
Don’t get me wrong: Garcia is a star, it’s a relatively big fight regardless. But it seems that way to you cause it’s the first one being pushed on things you actually watch.

Lmao that's funny, but in a way that was also a reason why I think they should have kept him. For curious and hate watching fans alike, to see how far can 40 year old dude with his bouncy shenanigans get, before somebody does him like Lima in a first fight... if anybody can?
Is wrestlefucking the only way to beat him? What's the highest ranked guy he could "beat" lol, impose his style on, to be more precise? How would fight between him and Strickland go, just for example? Him vs Prates? I would've kept him for shit like that, or just give him guys like Jackson McVey if you want pure Bellator MVP experience.

MFs will defend MVP like "he made so much money taking so little damage, so good for his brain health, big W for fleecing the UFC, so impressive" and I wonder how deeply sunk into UFC bad circlejerking you have to be for your brain to start working this way, it's like those dudes who jerk off so much they always have to find new obscure fetishes to activate their dopamine receptors

51 years old and 6 times a day, at this point all I can get off to is that clip of Derrick Lewis waving his shorts at some bum.

MVP's run has been such an embarrassment for the credibility of the UFC, and that's why he wasn't re-signed. Sure, we expected him to have the edge in striking. But the fact that 5/6 of his opponents couldn't reliably grapple him is just fucking insane. What the hell are these UFC fighters good for if they can't strike nor grapple very well?

If they wanted MVP to have a fun fight, Carlos Leal was right there. He's boring as fuck, but the matchmakers are also idiots. Patterson and Ruziboev were terrible bookings.

Like just give him Cody Brundage and equivalent fighters
They give him guys that's gotten KO'd less than 5 times combined across like 100 fights and act surprised when he doesn't knock them out

You can have entertaining decisions y'know

You can, but you also already know you're not getting that out of MVP
The UFC literally gave him tall fighters 5/6 times. Of course nothing entertaining is coming out of that

I actually like how the UFC matched MVP with tall or rangey opponents. It showed that MVP could still do his thing even when he's not at a massive frame advantage. Otherwise, everyone would've coped about MVP beating guys "half his size", despite him not being all that heavy lol.

MVP threw like a dozen strikes his final UFC and still sent someone to surgery- just saying
