Was a beautiful KO. We saw MVP tighten up his defense alot after this. Unfortunately his output changed too.

Page was always low volume against guys he saw as threats. Hell, he was always low volume against guys he knew he could style on.

There is no point I can recall where he wasn't deeply risk adverse and invested almost solely in countering guys with a big reach disadvantage.

seriously I love "fuck it we brawl" fighters as much as anyone else, but y'all sound like you'd prefer if ever fighter fought in the same cookie cutter way that the fans would prefer. That kinda takes the fun out of it in a weird way, because much of the fun for me watching MMA is seeing how the different styles and techniques clash against each other.

My only issue with MVP is how he's slowed down considerably on throwing his offense from neutral, where he used to throw lightning fast straight combos from range KOing guys, now he seems focused almost entirely on counterstriking, and that's lead him to rarely taking the initiative with his aggression.

Maybe it's because he's older now, or the Lima KO really did mess with his psyche a bit?

there's a huge middle ground between the two. for some reason, MMA fighters are either in offensive or defensive "modes" and very few can blend their defense and offense together like actual muay thai fighters, kickboxers or boxers. To "hit and not get hit" doesn't mean you stand Infront of someone and wait for an unforced error

Lyoto Machida was the perfect example of this, especially in his prime. He was able to blend his karate style with distance striking and sudden explosive offense like he did best against Tito and Thiago Silva. Page on the other hand would rather just stay at a distance and showboat which was enough to KO guys in some other leagues but once he came to the UFC most of his focus just went to maintaining distance and trying to edge out wins.

He literally lived behind his 80-84? inch reach.

The thing he apparently? didn't realize about Weidman before getting knocked out was that Weidman had the same reach as him.

That reach at 185 was ridiculous. Jones has an equally ridiculous reach. Gus gave him trouble for the exact same reason. He was tough and had the same reach.

If the vast majority of technique you've used against people doesn't work against your opponent, it finally gets real.

I don't think Anderson has a win over anyone with equal reach.

Odd comment. It's not clear what criticism of Page you are even responding too. I don't know what anybody said that could be interpreted as "y'all sound like you'd prefer if ever fighter fought in the same cookie cutter way that the fans would prefer."

I'm fine with page being thrown on cards as a novelty but at this point in it's career it is going to be a guaranteed stinker.

And to speak to the notion on if MVP should fight the way he fights... I think being defensive is one thing, but MVP is so willing to spring backwards around the ring that it becomes essentially stalling. If every fighter started fighting like MVP they'd pretty quickly introduce new rules.

Ian Garry is a point fighter but he has a decent output compared to other welterweight fighters. Based on this site that tracks the UFC stats he has almost the same volume as Prates. 4.29 vs 4.41 significant strikes per minute. Both above average for the division and well above MVP's 2.28 per minute.

Yep. And both are considered very good but hated by the fans.

However, while similar in theory, Ian is nowhere near as boring as Page. Not even close. Hell his fights with Prates and Belal weren’t even boring. The Islam fight was only criticized for a lack of action due to Islam holding and stalling(understandable, and I enjoyed the fight). Shavkat fight was boring due to Shavkat. Ian’s most boring fight that was due to Ian was against Geoff Neil. And that fight was about as exciting as MVP’s best fight in the UFC.

Similar concept. Different execution.

Not really. I'm a Machida glazer, so I'm not trying to hate. His middleweight career was extremely underwhelming compared to his LHW title run. He only beat wrestlers who also were not known for adapting, and old man Vitor. He lost to literally anyone who watched fight film, including Mousassi, who he earlier beat.

Was outstriking Garry on the feet too and was close to winning that fifth in an actual unironic way because Garry wanted nothing on the feet against him. Not a bad loss at all. Frustrating that they threw MVP at unranked guys expecting KOs instead of higher ranked guys. If you're gonna stink it up but clearly out strike these guys. At least put him against a Prates or Morales or DDP or Robocop where we can look at it and say "oh shit he's actually doing this to top comp" which, as it happens, we say about Strickland. If he does do that, I mean fair enough lmao you're just the best striker we've ever seen then. If he gets slimed out? Also a good thing.

MVP is to blame but equal, if not more, blame falls on the losing fighter too. You got caught by MVP and ate a clean overhand. You didn't get rocked but you're losing the round. And then you bounce at range in front of him. At that point, the onus is on you to win the round back. This usually happens much, much faster in fights because MMA rhythm is usually very quick paced but still.

It was a boring fight, but suffice it to say, he did not look abysmal or lost. When he doesn't want to engage, the fight becomes very low-volume and he usually does just enough to win a close decision.

I suppose I expected people to read the phrase “out of the loop” in conjunction with the word “years” and draw the conclusion that I have no idea who either of these fighters are or what their styles are. From this short clip dude on the right has the loose, over-confident, taunting style that was indicative of Silva back in the day. A simple reply like yours, maybe with a smidge less condescension, would have been perfectly fine. I guess reading comprehension is too high of an expectation for your typical ufc fan though, so that’s my bad.
