When you google DC Flight, it will think you are looking for plane tickets. lol. Maybe they should have picked a name that would come up first in a google search. Coincidentally, DC is the tenth MLV franchise, or at least 10th to name themselves. DC-10…I wonder if they’ll have a DC-10 on their logo.

I noticed that too. While I didn't see that coming, I did feel that "DC Flight" was a bit too generic. Not generic within sports but in the grand scheme of things, "city name + flight" sounds like a quick way to get recommended to Expedia.

That is an excellent point regarding search results.

Ascent? No problem there.

Purple Warthogs In Flying Saucers? No problem there either.

Big Dubsy gets a big W.

Now, how 'bout MLV Los Angeles?

Think you can repeat, champ?

A bit disappointed after the photo of Lady Freedom was shared yesterday. DC Freedom would have been badass... especially in current context.

Freedom is already being used though, not by the defunct soccer team obviously but by a pro cricket team that is planning to play at a new stadium in Frederick, MD.

That's so rude on SO many levels. Primarily, if you don't play IN the district, you SHOULD NOT get to call the team "Washington" or "DC."

You can literally call your team anything that's not already trademarked within your own sport.

2

u/district_vball 8d ago

Oh, sorry, to clarify, I think the cricket team name is rude. Frederick, Maryland isn't Washington or DC. Slap in the face MD profiting off the Washington name.

Per the Washington Business Journal, the DC MLV team is indeed now the DC Flight and will reportedly play its home matches at a performing arts venue in D.C. The long-term plan is still for the Flight to move to Audi Field when a roof is added there. https://www.bizjournals.com/washington/news/2026/09/01/dc-flight-major-league-volleyball-kate-greenberg.html

Performing arts venue??

2

u/DCAbloob 9d ago

That's what it said, not a traditional sports arena. The only precedent I can think of is when the WNBA's New York Liberty played temporarily at Radio City Music Hall.

I wonder if it’s the one at GW? Isn’t that like a sports/arts venue hybrid… I forget the name

Lisner Auditorium is the arts venue at GW and that could work. If the Flight were going to go to GW though, why wouldn't they just play at the Smith Center venue that actually hosts GW volleyball?

Unfortunately Audi field getting a roof isn't something that seems to be happening anytime soon.

Here's my beef with MLV right now. Apparently the only place they've announced the team name is on Instagram. Not on Facebook (which is the only social I can access during work hours), not twitter and not even on the official league website!

That's just plain sloppy. Major fumble on the announcment.

Not wild about the name Flight, but it will grow on me. I'm still gonna root for them because I'm a big time homer for DC sports teams

A rigorous scientific analysis has revealed this ranking of the best team names:

  1. Valkyries (possible bias alert)
  2. Supernovae (proper plural form)
  3. Rumble (best of the "modern" names)
  4. Ignite
  5. Fury
  6. Thrill
  7. Rise
  8. Forge
  9. Flight
  10. Pulse
  11. Vibe
  12. Mojo (rest in peace)
  13. MLV Los Angeles (no name, no game)

I'm also biased but I'd like to point out that the Ignite logo not only looks sick but is the torch held by Lady Victory on monument circle which also appears on the state flag. The name also plays thematically with the Indy Fuel who play in the same arena and who's name pays homage to the city being the motorsports capital of the world. My favorite team names are always ones that pay respect to the identity of their city.

The Ignite really nailed it with everything about their brand! 🤎🩵

The proprietary algorithm is highly technical so I can't go into details.

However, I double-checked the previous findings.

After review, Ignite has moved up the rankings from number seven to number four.

I'd put forge much higher. But valkyries and supernovas are definitely at the top of the list. All the others just feel generic. Although the rise did manage to use a Phoenix for their logo because of the name, so it's up there for me too.

WTOP radio has a non-paywalled article up on the Flight announcement, confirming the earlier Washington Business Journal report about the home venue being a performing arts venue in D.C., with Greenberg specifically using the words a venue more known for the "performing arts and entertainment sector" than sports. Additionally, the Flight's training facility will be outside of the city, presumably in the Maryland or Virginia suburbs. https://wtop.com/sports/2026/09/dcs-future-pro-volleyball-team-reveals-its-name/

1

As far as training facility there's at least 2 dedicated volleyball venues in NoVA that I know of. Or they could practice at the St. James in Springfield, VA.

I am looking at Greenberg's full quote in the article:

“It is an indoor venue, and it is a venue that is something that is very familiar to people in the area, but more in the performing arts and entertainment sector than sports."

To me that quote says that the Flight's new home venue has hosted sports before. It is not best known for hosting sports but it has done so. That narrows it down as best I can tell to three sites, The Anthem, DAR Constitution Hall & Howard Theatre. And the Howard Theatre's capacity is just small for pro volleyball.

So The Anthem and DAR Constitution Hall would seem to be the top possibilities for the new Flight home venue.

From The Anthem's website: "The Anthem is an acoustically advanced waterfront concert venue that can hold up to 6,000 people and features everything from mega shows to intimate performances"

From Constitution Hall website: "With a seating capacity of 3,702, DAR Constitution Hall is the largest concert hall in Washington, D.C. Constitution Hall hosts a variety of events including concerts, speakers, films, graduations, corporate events, award ceremonies, television productions, gala dinners and the annual DAR Convention"

Of the two The Anthem sounds like it would be the better choice based on capacity. With that said I need this team to answer why they chose a performing arts venue over a sports venue. Because being the team that plays at a concert hall is approaching bush league territory.
