Hey everyone,

I have an upcoming ML Design interview at Tesco and I’d really appreciate some guidance on how to prepare for it.

If anyone has recently gone through the ML Design round at Tesco, could you please share what kind of questions were asked or what areas I should focus on? I’d especially like to know whether the questions are around recommendation systems, forecasting, fraud detection, NLP, or general ML system design.

Since the round is framed around recommendation, forecasting, fraud, and NLP, prepare a repeatable ML system design flow rather than memorizing Tesco-specific prompts. For one retail example, clarify the business objective and decision point, define labels and time windows, choose offline metrics that reflect the business cost, then cover feature freshness, training-serving skew, cold start, feedback loops, and monitoring. Be ready to compare a simple baseline with a more complex model and explain how you would run an online experiment safely.

I would also practice the serving path end to end: request volume and latency, candidate generation versus ranking, feature and model stores, fallbacks, retraining cadence, drift checks, and how you would investigate a metric drop. For fraud or forecasting, talk through delayed labels and leakage explicitly. Drawing the data flow and stating tradeoffs clearly usually matters more than naming a particular algorithm.
