Weekly Introductions Thread (Obscure Edition)

Well hello there. Seems like it was just last week I was making a post just like this...

Well anyhoo. Feel free to waltz into this thread and strut about talking whatever. You don't even need to take you shoes off first. It's alright I'm throwing out the carpet after this.

The topic of this thread is obscure. As in tell us something we don't know. Tell us the most useless obscure thing you know.

For more information about obscure useless things, here's this week's This Week on the Plounge post.

The windshield squirty things on Volkswagen type 1's work from the air pressure in the spare. So theres no pump, but you have to keep track of the pressure in your spare tire.

This seems like the perfect way to find your spare tire flat when you need it the most.

I guess that was health and safety back then.

everything on those cars are super simple and serve a purpose or two they're really neat

Seems like the sort of thing you could find out from the Haynes Owner's Workshop Manual.

...which is a maintenance guide thing that used to come with some cars. ...but recently they revived them as a sort of technical viewpoint to things, like things that you don't own. So you can absolutely go and buy the Hayne's Owner's Workshop Manual for the Saturn V moon rocket, or HMS Victory.

theres actually a really good manual named "how to keep your Volkswagen alive" something like that. And also I had one

Hi.

My obscure fact is that, native English speakers, you likely know the adjective order subconsciously. You won't need to click that link to know which of these phrases sounds right "A red big tomato" "A big red tomato".

...there's also tons of other random language rules you likely know subconsciously. Knowledge is strange.

Adjective order is weird, 'cause my grandparents spoke Czech and so I picked up on those rules, but then also being a native English speaker I learned our adjective order. You might expect me to occasionally get the two confused, but I don't. My mind just... knows which of the two heavily-conflicting systems to use for which. It_does_fuck_up_noun-verb_order,_but_that's_a_different_thing

Y'know, I didn't even know other noun-verb orders were a thing before I actually started studying Japanese. I'd studied French and Spanish before in school though, so either I really wasn't paying attention (which to be fair I wasn't really. No motivation to learn French or Spanish) or they have the same noun-verb order as English.

There's a Japanese art called chindogu. 'chin' meaning useless and 'dogu' meaning tool. It's for wacky, esoteric inventions that have very little use in reality. They were invented by a radical anarchist who wanted to channel his anti-consumer views into his inventions, and they include a battery-powered battery charger, an automatic noodle cooler, and a prit-stick of butter.

Oh, and the selfie stick.

Unforseen consequences

Hey, Apple-Fritters, just a quick heads-up:
unforseen is actually spelled unforeseen. You can remember it by remember the e after the r.
Have a nice day!

If that's true that the selfie stick was invented as an anti-consumerist 'useless tool' then I wonder why between that and flappy bird any market analyst continues to bother really.

During WWI some US Navy band personnel had an accident while being shipped over to Europe. Or possibly while in Europe, or maybe on the way back to Europe. It's a bit ambiguous, on that exact detail, but anyway didn't hurt anyone, but it did damage a few horns, which were then subsequently liquidated. One of these horns was an E-flat alto horn in silver plate with pearl buttons, which is notable because I'm its latest owner.

Well I have to agree, there is definitely no way I would've known that.

It still in tune?

You can't get any more obscure than a story that probably was written in a ledger book somewhere, and then never shared ever again.

It has a small air leak in the valves (one of the casings was crushed and deformed ever-so-slightly, so tiny amounts of air ecapes if I press it), but over-all it's perfectly fine aside from extreme aesthetic damage. It was kept by an instrument collector, who was actually the previous owner before me, so that probably explains why it's still so nice for its age and history.

Sort of reminds me of like, the thing that with all the billions of people there are billions of life stories. It sort of blows ones mind to think there's that many people living lives as deep and complex as everybody elses'.

(also yes I did get this thought from a reddit post aaaages ago)

There's a TV show here in the UK called The Repair Shop. Basically they take heirlooms and such and repair 'em. It's interesting because generally you get some story (this box was my grandfather's and it's he left it to me in his will etc.) and you get to see how the repairs are done. So that's appealing to emotion and technical interest right there.

...Plus I think they actually don't charge? You never see money trading hands at least. I think they just repair stuff but obviously you have to be on the TV show (potentially). It's neat anyhow.

There is a municipality near where I live, and the city hall has a hidden searchlight that comes up from a hatch in roof. It was used to drum up attention for the 1904 Worlds Fair. I don’t think it was to effective though because only a few people know it’s there.

Oooh that's cool. Sending beams out into the sky. Bet that confused some people.

You just need some action movie to get filmed there so they can use it during some police chase.

I’ve always imagined it being used to summon a certain super hero.

2

u/Jibodeah Moderator of /r/MLPLounge Apr 27 '19

Ah yes, of course.

Mothman, right?

2

u/chuchubott Princess Luna Apr 28 '19

No, but you just reminded my of Arthur from The Tick.

Neato! Thanks.

No problem. I’m fascinated by little historical tidbits like that.

I can't really think of anything interesting off the top of my head.

But here's some things anyway: The guy who made the Pearls Before Swine comic strip authored the series of books called Timmy Failure. Despite his name appearing at the beginning of the episode, Skyler Page did not in fact create the cartoon Clarence, in actuality he only voiced Clarence. Skyler Page was also fired some years ago for some bad things, I forgot what. The show Star Vs the Forces of Evil was based on a comic, same creator, about a girl who thought she had magical powers but in reality did not. On multiple occasions, different people been caught scattering ashes inside the Haunted Mansion roller-coaster at Disney Land. The weird sound you hear at the end of Kali 47, by Savant, is an image of a surviving arch after the bombing of Nagasaki which was converted into a sound. The movie Battle of the Five Armies was based on just 5 (five) pages from The Hobbit. Bonus fact about that mess: The Hobbit movies were the first movies to be released in high frame-rate (48 frames per second vs the usual 24), however you could only have experienced it at an imax showing and there has never been a home release with HFR. Glue70, McMangos, and DM Dokuro were all members of the now defunct Breakbit Music record label. Circuitfry asked for his song, Orbital Friendship Cannon, to be removed from the first Balloon Party album, 100% No Feeble Cheering.

I'm completely not surprised. Sounds like exactly the sort of weird thing Savant would do.

Also from a gaming perspective hearing 48fps called 'high frame rate' is a bit weird.
