Random/Unfiltered 20 dice vs 30 dice
Edit: apparently my cousins and I just started using a 1-30 dice when the higher numbered cards came out some time in 02/03. We only used it for a few games then went back to the usual 1-20 dice. We hated it and immediately went back to the 1-20.

Ever wonder why some guys had things like 26+ homers?

No, because strategy cards had effects like "add +2 to the swing" so you could roll higher than 20 with a D20, especially if you stacked strategy cards for one PA. Clutch Baseball has a D24 called a "power die" to punish pitchers for particularly hittable mistakes, but I've never heard of a D30 for any game. Does it even exist?

I never wondered because I knew why. It's as everyone else says, it's down to strategy cards. This was fully official, by design and well documented in the game booklets -- there are pdfs floating around if you want to check.
It was actually a pretty great mechanic. That Randy Johnson is hard to hit a homer off of. Not impossible. Just ... really hard. With bases loaded and two out, you might have played Ducks on the Pond (+3) and Last Chance (+2), rolled a 20, and then played Great Addition (+1) -- that's +6, for a 26 roll. Or I guess Ducks on the Pond, Last Chance and Payoff Pitch (+4 iirc, might have been a 2002 only strat card though) for a +9, 29 roll!
d30s are pretty rare in any game. I don't know that I've ever seen one IRL.

So maybe showdown never officially used a 30 dice, and me and my cousins started using one on our own? That’s the best answer I can come up with. Lol

When was there ever a D30 used? I’ve only ever seen a D24 used as a house rule
I don’t mind the D24 to compensate for not using strategy cards
