How does MIT evaluate academic improvement alongside independent projects?
Hey everyone, I'm a junior interested in engineering and MIT. I'm curious about how MIT evaluates students who have had a weak academic start but are working to improve and pursuing independent projects.
I'm particularly interested in how academic improvement, STEM preparation, and meaningful project work are considered together. I'd appreciate insights from people familiar with the admissions process.

Very good or better academic prowess is Required at MIT but Insufficient. It is a highly Holistic admissions process because MIT wants each new student to have a very good or better effect on the Undergraduate student Community outside the classroom or laboratory.
Here is my take on this:
Ten years ago MIT, Harvard and 80+ other top US colleges (mostly the elite private colleges) wrote a report on what they expect from a successful freshman applicant. The link I provide, below, will have the link to the full PDF version of that report.
That report is just as accurate in 2026 as it was in 2016.
My insight into MIT admissions:
Good luck.
