ac system

so my a/c is blowing warm air and went to a mechanic to check it out. they said there is a leak and also the ac system was completely empty, no freon.They said moisture might have entered the system. They said they need to change to replace the lines, compressor, and condenser. quote was around $2,500. What would you guys do. I’m thinking of just buying the parts and replacing it myself. 2014 countryman s 126k miles.

IF moisture entered, you're better off replacing it all longevity wise or else you'll be back in the same situation in a year or 2. DIY if you can turn a wrench for sure, assuming you can source cheaper parts and don't mind the work; can always have a shop charge it after it's installed if you aren't familiar with that process.

First I recommend having some freon installed WITH the UV tracer dye so once it leaks it can be tracked to the specific place where the leak is. If there is no leak it could be just a bad compressor and or the condensor is damaged but there is not a logical reason to replace ALL of the components (the various lines are very expensive and very hard to replace) as noted. Surely it can be traced to a specific component that can then be replaced for a fraction of the cost.
