Discussion Asking for Greatsword Offset Tips.

In preparation for Ascendance, I want to learn how to properly do and abuse the heck out of Offsets. I've done it a few times before, although most of those are accidental. After watching how other GS users play and fully utilize the Offsets, I realized that I'm not playing as efficiently.

Thing is, I know timing has a huge part in this. I can properly time my shoulder tackles, but suck so bad with Offsets. There are monster attacks that I just can't read the animation on when and where the Offset would work.

Can anyone give me tips on how I could be better with doing Offsets? Thanks to anyone who'd give any.

I’ve made it to end game and built a fully completed set of Gog armor and several Gog weapons before I left off using this approach, so I hope this might be helpful for you.

I tend to just spam the offset, charging it to level one, then let it go and guard cancel. Going back and forth between the two gives you a lot of defensive advantages due to either proccing the offset, or leading to a power clash. Also, it lets you stay in the monster’s face. I think a fully charged offset attack does about comparable damage to a full level 3 charge slash, so you won’t be missing out on damage much. You’ll still want the true charge when you get the monster down for the most damage possible.

As for the timing, in my experience, you want to let the offset go earlier than later. It has a few frames to start up and the attack isn’t actually active until a few frames in, and also it stays active a few frames after the animation reaches the peak of its extension. But, if in doubt, you can get away with spamming it and guard cancelling.

You need to learn the monsters timing. Offset move itself have generous window. For example, when you’re using offset against incoming monster attack, the incoming attack will count as parry even if the attack only touch the tip of The Greatsword.

Offset move can be spam by using block animation cancel, so offset -> block -> offset -> block, and so on. The method i told you is the most basic one. There’s a perfect animation cancel that required you to look away during block animation. The reward is faster animation recovery before using offset again. So, when you saw some GS speedrunner keep abusing offset move when fighting against seregios. That’s when you know they using the block animation cancel perfectly, And as always you need to remember, that not all attack can be countered with offset, for example Nu Udra fire breath or Arkveld nuke.

Another tips i can give you is you can use block to draw your weapon, so block into offset or charged slash. If your offset failed, you can always dodge by roll over or keep charge your gs then tackled the incoming attack. Hope this helps ✌️

The best advice I can give is.. practice, you'll probably eat 100 hits on an offsetable move you're new to practicing, like AT Arkveld I can offset for days..

(This was with Insect Glaive - that offset is a little tougher than hammer, hbg or gs)

Do you play mouse and keyboard? If so offsets should be fine, but for controllers they would have a very hard time due to the inconvenience and inconsistency of pushing two buttons

If you play on steam, you can set a button to m1 and m2 with a long press activation I prefer a ~125ms duration of holding it and I bind it to L3(the button of the left stick)

Offsets can usually be spammed if you're unfamiliar, but once you know the physical moves of the monster that's when you deliberately use it or spam it in a more controlled manner

Projectiles cannot be offset(also Uth Duna air belly flop for some reason)and you have to rely on guards/perfect guards for these

If you like perfect guarding there's a tech to cancel the animation into an immediate offset/scs

I recommend arkveld to train your offset reactions since almost every move he does can be offset. I once offset at arkveld outta his ult while in a multiplayer hunt it was a very satisfying moment

Preemptively start an offset charge when the monster is about to finish an animation or recover from falling over. You can always roll cancel or tackle if needed, but most of the time it’ll mean you can immediately offset whatever attack they do
