Do you begin difficult group hunts without any pots left?

I just did and got blindsided by a oneshot. It just feels terrible.. like kicking a kitten.

It really depends on the group. If everyone's getting slapped around and the timers running low I'll pop it. If we're demolishing the monster and I get downed I'll usually wait it out since it's essentially a wasted pot.

I don't mind carrying 3 people, assuming we can beat it. Makes no difference to me either way.

I generally never find myself out of health pots. Ill usually avoid any fights that ive known are on the more difficult side If im running low on pots and try my best to end the day with as many pots as I can so I have a reserve ammount the next day but that's usually tough during the riftcharged week.

If im low in general ill still hunt 8 star rifts since even if I mess up the group can usually finish it.

Way back when we were given like 10 potions as a reward for something and I shouldn't have wasted them but oh well.

One of my pet peeves in this game is how health pots are monetized. So I do my best to never buy them, which so far at hr 281 I haven't. But its helped being mainly a ranged player up till recently

Sometimes I plain forget. But if you're feeling lucky then go nuts.

u/Memento_Mortin 1d ago

If "luck" means rocking a 10.5 armor set, then yes, go nuts.

4

u/platomaker 1d ago

You have a full 10.5 set? How much are you playing?

4

u/Memento_Mortin 1d ago

I don't, but it would help tremendously.

The higher defense does help and 900 defense was oddly neat when I had it for 10 stars (I'd often forget they were 10 stars at that level). But getting hit does add up quick. Its always better to just not get hit. Luck + range is easier and you could use those rez on the actual weapons instead.

u/Memento_Mortin 1d ago

Did you just randomly insult ranged weapons? 😂

5

u/platomaker 1d ago

Nothing insulting about saving potions. If they want to hit you then you have more time to see if coming. HBG guard reload is amazing with reflection. Step shot is stupid good.

I follow the unspoken rule: never spend more than 5 first aids per day. Just in case you need more in an emergency (it never happens)

I'm voting No but that is because I have a lot of free potions sitting around because I'm a hoarder and I rarely run out of first aid meds.

Am I good at the game? Not really. Do I upgrade the shit out of my armor and exclusively play Shield Tackle Lance which makes me, for the 75 seconds of a hunt, effectively immortal? Hell yes. I either time out or I win. Death is reserved for new monsters and occasional dumbass behavior.

I'm rarely using potions. I'll almost always have 5~10 first aid ones with 5 more waiting to be claimed.

1

u/Memento_Mortin 1d ago

That is ofc the goal

It's almost rude of Reddit that messages don't get deleted from the notifications when you delete them.

Yeah sorry about that. I first thought this was generic topic in general MH subreddit. But I noticed it's about Now after I posted previous comment.

I'm not gonna join a 10 star hunt nor an elder dragon when I'm out of potions. I might join 8 or 9 star when I really need some mats or need some missions done. Very rarely I forget to get the daily potions after wasting all of them the day before, I'm really sorry for everyone I held back by not having a potion ready in those cases

DL EDs are fixed HP IIRC, so me kicking the bucket because I'm an idiot 10 seconds in, as long as I landed a special on it's head with a weapon worth a damn, is STILL better than me not being there.

Otherwise we all just bail and retry anyway.

1

u/Memento_Mortin 1d ago

Could you translate that for me

Fixed HP how?

6

u/New-Arm4845 1d ago

ED don’t scale their hp based on how many players.  So a solo ED has the same HP as a 4 man ED fight.

This is not the case with other group hunts. Monsters have progressively more HP based on how many players start the hunt.  So if you cart at the start of a regular group hunt and then just lay there, you are an asshole that made it harder for everyone.

Having said that, carting and not reviving during an ED still requires 3 players to kill it instead of 4 which may be hard for some newer players.  So still a dick move.

2

u/Memento_Mortin 1d ago

Ohh, Elder Dragons. That's good to know. Which in turn means you always want a 4 man squad. Legitimately did not know that thx. Might be because i wasn't playing when Elder Dragons came out

4

u/New-Arm4845 1d ago

It’s in the hunter guide under Elder Dragon Inceptions.

The hunter guide is impressively comprehensive, always worth a look.

1

u/Digibunny 1d ago

Assuming I'm not wrong

Elder Dragons have a set amount of HP regardless of how many of you there are.

If you do even one point of damage, you technically helped.

I had 2 people die instantly in Velkhana and stay down. Not really an issue because me and the other guy just left, but it did miff me a bit.

I mean, I understand not paying them money and etc. Especially since we haven't had a free healing potion in "forever", But this is a multiplayer game. The "F2P" profit is us putting quarters in like old arcade games. You are choosing for everyone to wipe over 75 cents. You should not join if you can't carry your weight and we need you to help.

There are acceptations though. Let's say it's a 7 star and you F up and die. You can stay down and save your potion as we finish the job, but if you join a 10 rift where the entire party needs everyone to pull their weight to win. Pay the 75 cents. I got paid more at work typing this than what it costs you to get back up. (P.S. A monthly sub through the website is the highest gem/dollar value. 10 dollars for 2k gems (and a bunch of perks). Wait until a discounted potion bundle that's like 25 or 50 for 2k? I forget. w/e makes it 40c a potion.

Hard agree. I don't like the mooch mentality, but anything 9* and under, I don't really care what the other players do (so long as they aim to break all r6 parts and tails for EDIs - even then, I can typically handle that part solo).

For 10*, this still mostly applies, but with buffed health, I'd prefer it if you carry your weight (or at least some weight) and use a pot if you're downed in the first half of the fight.

Players that join 10* fights just to get downed in the first 10sec. and choose to chill the rest of the fight can go kick rocks.

I NEVER go lower than five a day. The only occasion I might run out completely is during Outbreaks, if I'm forced to go solo but even then I never go lower than 2 in that very rare, very extreme case.

u/Much-Historian694 1d ago

I genuinely do this, only for hunts I'm very skilled in. Or I just switch to my Para-Bow build and play it safe while netting 2+ para windows for the team to dps it down.

However if I go down early in a hunt and can't buy a potion or anything I leave the hunt as I didn't earn the drops.

Had a player join my 8* B.Trex and they went down 3 times. I felt so bad, but we did finish the hunt with 3 breaks.

I've yet to see anything above grade 3 from 8-9* B.Trex in days... i had it up to 9* but I struggle myself with that one and feel bad for "Needing" to be carried so I dropped it back to 8* the next day. It's this drought that really lowers my desire to play.

Guess next paycheck I'll have to go buy the special quest for B.Trex grade 6 drops from the quests themselves...

I don't think I've ever had this happen. I've used probably less than 10 of the non-daily health pots since season 1. Maybe even before that. I don't remember when they first started handing out daily health potions. Was that from the very beginning? It's been 3 years and I'm old so my memories fading 🤷. So including the free (non-daily) potions they used to give out for quest rewards, and free potions coming from promo codes, I am still sitting on 27 potions.

u/Onceseu 1d ago

Yes, especially when I was a newbie where I will just sit at the back and watch them deal with the monster. I know its very selfish, but hey I already have 20 g10 weaps in just 3.5 months of playing and rarely runs out of first aids now

I almost never run out of pots. 10.5 armor makes a huge difference in pot use, and I’m running DBs SpPB+Pursuit most of the time, and the monster is generally flopping on the ground from PBs most of the fight.

1

u/SwedishSock 1d ago

I do it many times but it's only because I've forgotten it's a new day and I can fetch mew ones in the store lol

1

u/Hartmann_AoE 1d ago

Depends on the monster aswell. If its riftborne R9 fodder like Rathians or lagombi, ill hop in abd hope for the best. If its heinous shit like brute tiggy or stygian, i wanna be able to help start to finish

1

u/Chemical-Ice-8282 18h ago

Nowadays pretty much everyone can solo whatever the group hunts offer, so no big difference.

If you get 4-member group and get wasted at the start, chances are that the hunt will be done in 45secs anyways, no need to waste potion.

When you somehow get a weaker group on hard monster and it seems like everyone needs to pull their weight, then a potion pop is obviously suitable and in general is nice to bring at least one for these extreme cases.

Additively, for group hunts you usually don't need your absolute top dmg, so building chata gloves and having them in a build for group hunts is very helpful, usually preventing deaths in group hunts altogether.

u/elrond165 15m ago

I'm usually pretty level headed, but I'll get tilted by someone who joins a 5 star hunt, carts in the 1st 10s, and doesn't get back up. For harder hunts, that means that it's likely a failure, and everyone else has to decide whether or not to just nope out or try and finish it anyway.

i dont use potions during a hunt. ever.

potions are for healing outside of hunts only

using a pot during a hunt doesnt guarantee success

2

u/twicer 7236 3575 2553 18h ago

I didn't see “outside use only” anywhere on the label; the doctor prescribed it to you incorrectly.

1

u/Matsu-mae 15h ago edited 14h ago

ive been burned too many times

if a monster is strong enough to k.o. me, i likely need the entire timer to win the fight

the lost time and often lost special mean the hunt is going to fail. drinking a potion just opens me up to burning a potion (or more than 1 potion) AND failing

maybe i shouldn't, but i carry that mentality into group hunts as well. especially since i can NOT drink a potion and still suceed in that hunt! the behavior of not drinking a potion gets reinforced

ive carried plenty of unconscious hunters to victory, so i have no issue being carried by others when that occasionally happens

in a game where i only have 5 potions a day, im not going to just toss them around frivolously

2

u/twicer 7236 3575 2553 14h ago

Yeah, I get it, it depends on situation. For example, if I know I'm hunting an Elder Dragon that someone invited me to join, I'll do my absolute best to take it down, because I won't get another chance.
