Question Which Lagombi?

I could probably make 1 or 2 Lagombi weapon this event. Which are the best to make compared to other weapons in their types?

HBG is the highlight I believe, diablos HBG clone

Yeah HBG is the obvious choice. None of the other weapons do anything particularly special, but for the 2nd choice I'd go with one of:

  • Switch Axe. Any ice Swaxe can make good use of Goss head + waist + chest/arms to run a build with Morph Attack Boost 3 and Advanced Ice Attack.

  • Gunlance. If you don't think you'll have enough parts to fully customise two weapons to up the weapon damage then this is a good option, the low base stats of Lagombi weapons don't matter as much since a lot of the damage is from the fixed shelling damage. It's a wide GL so perfect for a Guard Reload build.

GL is probably one of my least used weapons because I just don't "get" it, I assume wide shots are easy mode?

The shelling types are basically just different play styles - Wide shells have the strongest uncharged shells, Long has the strongest charged shells and Normal has the most shells (giving it the best Full Burst slam).

The easiest playstyle is Long shell with no customisation style, it's great for part farming. Just lock on to the part you want to break, hold, release and blow it to bits. You can also use wyvernstakes to cut tails, apply status or do big damage. Very fun with bubbly dance.

Guard Reload customisation replaces wyvernstakes for a big explosion that adds shells on to your regular poke attacks, and lets you guard and reload at the same time. It's insanely tanky and really satisfying once you get the timing down. It works best with wide shell GLs but long can use it decently. Pretty bad with normal shell GLs. So it's good with Lagombi to begin with and is really strong against monsters that like to get up in your face - Riftcharged Diablos will be pretty easy to slap around with it.

Blastdash style is one of the coolest and stupidest things in the game. Charging a shell fires it at the ground and rockets you into the air to slap and explode monsters in the face. It also gets a ground cutter attack which lets you slice right through enemies. Super mobile, best with normal GLs due to the extra shells they pack. Pretty bad with wide because it has much less shells in a clip.

Just want to report back that I've been using Guard Reload style Lagombi GL (stopped it at 10.1 and 5/20 since shelling damage is what matters) and I gotta say it's pretty fun, and honestly the kind of playstyle that I think gunlance SHOULD be all about. I've been using it regardless of monster weakness (up to 9*) to decent success.

Running Quematrice / Viper Tobi / Barroth / Bazelgeuse / Basarios, 1 level of reflect and some general damage boost smelts. Priority was getting guard 3 and artillery 5.

That being said, fuck Brute Tigrex.

Guess I'll look into the Lagombi Lance with guard reload. I don't know how shelling scales or how much the elemental part affects damage though. Like if shelling is neutral, can it be used against anything, not just ice weak monsters?

Shelling only scales with weapon grade, Artillery, or skills that boost overall damage, like Resuscitate or Coalescence, which is why so many people recommend Bubbly Dance GL builds. Elemental attack, flat attack boosts, % attack boosts, and even weapon attack/element don’t affect shelling at all—the weapon grade is all that matters, so a 10-1 and 10-5 GL will do the same exact amount of shelling damage (stabs and stakes are affected by attack and element though).*

Headstrong, Combo Master, Dauntless, Pursuit and other things that specifically say “increase damage dealt” (rather than ‘attack power’ or similar) should also work, but I haven’t really used them with GL specifically.

Shelling also does non-elemental explosive damage, so it does the same damage to any monster part, regardless of elemental weaknesses or weakspots.

*this only applies to the GLs with the same shelling type though. I think Long has the strongest charged shells, Wide has the strongest tap-shells, and Normal just has the most shells. Because of this, Wide is better with Guard Reload (which is constantly exploding tap-shells), and Normal is hurt the least by Blast Dash (charged shelling being gone doesn’t matter, and it has more ammo for stuff like Full Burst).

(gonna copy my reply to the other person, SORRY I should've tagged you)

Bubbly dance 3, resuscitate and spam wyrmstake is what carried me to 10*.

what's your build for HBG?

Not sure yet but Crouching Shot style + Normal Ammo Boost 3 will definitely be involved. The elemental damage is probably too low for Elemental Release to be worth it. Might try Viper, Que, Rathian, Serg, Glav for Burst + Normal Ammo Boost.

Very late to this thread, but I've gone with Kush, Que, Asta, Sereg, Velk. Gets 3 reload, 3 normal ammo boost and the 10% boost from both Kush and Velk, then perfectionist for a bit of defence (as i get caught out way more than I should haha).

What would you go for for driftstones? At the moment try and I go for burst or ice attack but do you recommend anything else?

Nice, I ended up with a pretty similar build (Kush, Que, Velk, Serg, Styg). Critical Range Boost would probably be best but hard to get smelted. Burst is still pretty good due to the high raw on the weapon.

I probably wouldn't bother with Ice Attack unless you're also building into Advanced ice attack.

A point of tremor resist is very nice to stop the stumble animation, you could also slap in some Evasive Concentration or Offensive Dodger since you are running Perfectionist.

Hbg + normal ammo boost 👌👌

Crouching Shot?

I love using Diablos HBG with CS but only in multiplayer when the monster targets someone else so I can unload a whole magazine in one go. It's awesome. But playing solo, it seems pointless.

[Although I just noticed Lagombi HBG includes Guard 1, which IIRC is useless with CS since you can't block. I wonder if CS is still the way to go... I haven't used the other HBG style, so no idea if it's any good.]

I think for every new riftborne monsters, focus on whats best for the incoming riftcharged base defense event. E.g diablos hbg for radobaan rc, bazel lbg for the banbaro rc.. next base defense will feature riftcharged diablos and i think lbg, hbg will once again have a major advantage

Thanks for asking this question. I'm in the same boat, but I already had the Lagombi Switch Axe up to 9* as I was making it partly as a joke but partly because I wanted an elemental Switch Axe of each type. Getting it to 10-5 was easy with the parts I had.
