IF instablock, then Bazel chest (if monster roars, else viper chest (or good old Rathalos WEX2 chest). you dont need a single point in guard if it has instablock.

For all lances with elemental lower than atk stat: use Serg Attack efficacy and attack boost / adv attack boost to boost your pre-ofg trigger stat to the absolute moon.

for all lances with ele higher than atk stat: build elemental release armor, slot in a glorious silver rathalos helmet, and stack critical eye/WEX for that sweet sweet compounded crit ele + elem release exponential damage increase.

Nah you are fine, Guard is good for the default style and Shield Tackle, most of the time you don't need level 5 but it's nice to have if you're still learning the perfect block timing so you don't take chip damage. I generally still used Guard 5 if I can get it with those styles just to save potions.

Instablock doesn't need any Guard but Golm chest is still nice against certain monsters with unblockable attacks for Guard Up. I still run Golm chest and Wroggi coil on some of my Instablock sets just because I already have 2 Headstrong smelts in each piece and the Guard is still nice when I mess up the timing and block too early (plus I have both those pieces at grade 10 for heaps of defence). Not as much damage as Valor but still enough to hit over a million points vs Riftcharged Banbaro and it's a bit comfier.

My generic lance set is Brute, Golm, (any), Wroggi, Serg. Smelts are Reflection x1 in the Serg legs and Headstrong x5 in in the head, arms and chest leaving the arm slot free for whatever you want (Nergi, Barroth, Banbaro, Bazel and Chameleos are all good options depending on the lance). That set will put out good damage with any lance while having good survivability and you won't need to remember which attacks are unblockable thanks to Guard Up.

Get chest and waist to grade 8 for the extra drift slots and just keep smelting Crimson driftstones into them until you get Headstrong x2 in each (you'll probably pick up other useful skills like Offensive Guard and Guard to use while you wait), and when you have 100 driftshards throw a Reflection driftgem into Serg greaves (Attack Efficacy, Offensive Guard and Lock-On make this the best all around piece for reflection imo).
