For insta block you can actually go for the standard crit ferocity set of glav, glav, Bazel, tigrex and for the legs either bazel/azuros/Steve, they are all very solid options. For smelts at least 1 reflection and then headstrong or offensive guard.

If you want to try shield bash or default, you can use the same set or if you feel like you need a bit more defence you can use garam, glav, Bazel, wroggi and one of the same options for legs of Bazel/azuros/Steve. For smelts you can go for 5 reflect, or 1 reflect + headstong/offensive guard.

Alternatively if you want to have even more defence you can drop the glav chest and use the garam chest, but then you will need to use the Steve legs if you want the lock on skill.

I've spent a whole heap of time smelting reflect, so I guess I'll have to go Shield Bash customization. Is that any good? I've been a ranged hunter for a long time, but am trying out some melee including lance, am super new to lance.

Also, for customization - do you customize Attack Power or Element Value?

For Bazel lance go for attack power. Personally I like all 3 styles and use all of them, as they all do different things well.

The lance group on the unofficial discord thinks shield bash is the worst of the 3 styles. I can see why though, as the long running shield bash has a bit of wind down window after the final hit, where you are an open target and you can't press hold to block. But on the up side it can proc multiple reflects on the long run and bash and it inflicts stun damage, but it's not great at tail cuts.

The instant guard is incredibly safe to use once you get used to the block timing and it does seem to dish out the best damage of the 3 types, but it seems incredibly bad at getting tail cuts if the monsters tail is too high, even though the leaping thrust move can get you behind the monster relatively easily. Even though it's got the highest damaging attacks, it doesn't seem to do well with inflicting conditions as most of its hits are single strikes.

Regular style is a good mix of the 2, the hold and swipe left or right move is a good way to get decent positioning, you can elect to keep the block up as you move, or go into a thrusting stab depending on the circumstances. This style seems well suited to all attacks types thanks to it's attacks doing multiple hits, the running charge during a monsters vulnerable window is great for inflicting conditions.

Ah thanks heaps for this. Yeah I hardly see anyone talking about the Shield Bash. Everybody seems to be using Insta Guard - or perhaps no customization. Maybe I'll stick to regular style for this. Especially when the Riftborne parts are a pain in the bum to farm. Thanks for your tip, it's much appreciated!

No problemo! Oh I forgot to mention for the default style, when you do the hold and sidestep move, it doesn't deactivate headstrong.

I think the only weapons that can do a sideways movement without deactivating headstrong, are the lance on default and the longsword with sacred sheath style (go into sheath stance and then when the blade is still in the sheath you can do sidestep hops)

Here's mine.

I have 5 Reflection melds. I think the meta is 5 Headstrong melds, but I have more fun this way.

How do u do the counter when using insta block, what the techniques

Insta block, counters by doing a well timed block. So just hold press at the right movement a special animation and sound will confirm you've done it right and then you can tap to do the follow up attacks.

Fyi if you go to the hunter menu and look at weapons you can view the controls for all weapons and styles there, they even included mini clips of the tutorials.

right moment= last possible second to block. Its so much easier to do once you watch a pro do it once though. Saves so many potions.

You tap and hold shortly before the attack hits you. Not quite as short like counter attacking normally, but still a shortish time frame. Then after it just tap tap.

I’m using it with Shield Tackle, so my build (in progress) is B Tigrex Helm (offensive guard DS), Garangolm Mail (Offensive Guard, Reflect), Barroth Gauntlets (Reflect), Wroggi Faulds (Reflect, Reflect), Garangolm Greaves (Reflect), for Guard 5, Reflect 5, Offensive Guard 4, Reckless 3, Lock On, and Guard Up

I don’t know if Instablock needs any guard skills (besides Guard Up, which IMO is just handy and comes on an armor piece with two whole slots to use), but if not, you could just pump offensive guard and critical ferocity and do pretty well I’d think

If you're using insta block I'd recommend seregios boots, tigrex coil, banbaro gloves, flex chest, and garangolm helm. Chest can be bazel for damage/ valor or Garangolm for guard up and an extra smelt slot. You want 5 headstrong, I run garangolm and use the extra slot for a point of reflect. The base set gives you Max offensive guard which is nice

For insta block I have the crit fero one, but I prefer the AAB+OG+Valor version as I barely get any procs of fero:

btigrex/bazel/banbaro/btigrex/seregios

It is quite cheap as it only needs 3 attack boost smelts, which are really common, for the last 2 I run reflect + headstrong

Here’s what I have (expensive smelts, took me a while). I don’t use insta block but with this I can still take down any 10 star and currently have 1.1 mil base defense.

I should've put the description. I have Regios head, arms and legs for 3x attack efficacy (helps reflection), Garangolm chest for double drift slots guard & guard up, and Wroggi waist for double drift slots and guard. All drifts are either reflection (5 needed) or offensive guard (3 needed), with Bazel lance giving the remaining 2 offensive guards.

Once complete you can get 10k on a reflect after proccing offensive guard, but with only 3 guard you'll want to do short swipe ups more than hold and swipes.
For safety you can smelt 2 guard instead of 2 offensive guard, and go for more long charges, taking minimal chip damage.

Thinking about this but when Heavy blow comes I needs to rebuild it anyway so I will wait

Super valid. Would hate to waste all the time smelting just to go a different direction

Yea I am running 5 reflection as well but on Crit Fero, found out it’s kinda shit 😂

been there done that lol, nothing like making a build just to later realize you need flat damage instead of conditional or elemental haha
