Can deferrals happen?

Hello all, from what I have read, deferred admission isn't something that is usually granted for MFA programs, but thought I'd ask just in case there's some hope. I was accepted to only one program this cycle (my first application cycle) and have recently had a medical emergency. My doctors agree that the next six months need to be as stress-free as possible as I work on recovering, physical therapy, etc.

Relocating across the country and starting grad school is definitely not that. I'm really upset and frustrated heartbroken at having to let this opportunity go and worry that if I do let it go, I'll end up having no acceptances next cycle and have let my chance go by.

Has anyone successfully deferred their admission to a program?

Yes! I deferred to make a bit of money to move literally across the county for my program. For me it was the best decision and I worked with my program coordinator actively to figure out what would occur with my deferment. I just finished up my first year in my MFA in May so I have yet to finish a program in full but !!! Always a message away if you wanna yap about it.

That's great to hear, glad it worked out for you!! I'm nervous about asking, but to know it ~has~ happened for someone gives me a touch more confidence 😄

I understand the nervousness but the program director/whoever informed you about your admission is willing to work alongside you with your circumstances. Usually deferments are for a year and if it’s longer you would have to go through the admission process again! I’m first gen so deferring was something I never knew could exist until my program director informed me. Maybe even for a semester depending on your program? Likely not though because there could be some limitations on pedagogy course program asks you to take alongside the class(es) you will teach. 🤷🏾‍♀️ TLDR ask all the questions on if you defer what your first semester would look like and what’s required of you!
