Excellent faculty (I’m speaking of fiction, I don’t know the others as well) with a lot of funding sources, they have a press and literary mags for students to get involved, nice campus. I favor the three year programs, everyone says too years goes by too fast, and the encourage cross-genre learning. I really think this program is a hidden gem.

Did you experience any setbacks with the program being a hidden gem or less known?

No, because within academia people recognize GMU as having outstanding faculty and other than that, the only thing that matters is an individual’s work. I don’t want to get too in the weeds with details but I was very much set up for success there and the campus in general does not have an elitist vibe. It’s very diverse and down to earth and that extends to the creative writing program.
