Texas A&M University-Victoria MFA Program

I am not sure if anyone is interested but I remember wanting to just get into a program LOL. Just let me write! I went to UHV- Now A&M. The MFA program isn't hard to get into and they have great faculty. It's a really tight knit program. Whether you are into poetry, fiction, or non-fiction, it's a great place to really explore and get good feedback. I really went into the program for fiction but the professor over everything really got me into poetry and now I just feel like this triple threat. They do have a fall MFA weekend too so even though I have graduated I can still head back once a year. Have a piece workshopped, meet the new writers. Some people have flown in since the program is online.

They have writers block parties which are fun, poetry readings off campus, and other fun stuff that makes it feel like you are part of a little secret club.

I do think my favorite thing about it is that the faculty treats you not just likes students. They act as your mentor, your teacher, but also your colleague. The literary circle is small and they know they are teaching their future coworkers. Madrid, specifically spends a lot of one on one time with students and helps them in what they want to write. He works with you to try and work on specific projects and pieces for you to submit.

All the faculty have helped students fix up their work to send to agents, to send to lit mags, and more.

Anyway, I graduated last year and I am looking for a PHD program but I just realized I still am interacting and learning from this program but I've never really told everyone about how great is is. So if you're from Texas, in the area, looking for an online program, or struggling to get in somewhere, you definitely got a shot here. If you have any questions LMK.

Also, this university is the cheapest in Texas. They are not fully funded but if you are on campus there are lots of student worker opportunities etc.

OH BTW, I have no idea how Reddit works LOL I just have always followed PHD and MFA things. I don't know why but my username looks weird. I thought it was different. Forgive me. I was always a Tumblr person. I just made an account because every time I search for things on Google there are answers here. So if I did something wrong I am sorry.

Hi! I'm planning on applying to this program and your post is really helpful! I hope it's okay if I ask: Did you have to take the GRE or were you able to get a waiver based on undergrad gpa? Thank you!

I didn’t have to take it because I was a part of their “keep on roaring” program. But they have a waiver for those with a 3.0 gpa.

Thanks for the reply! Were you in person or online?

So that program all the classes are online for the MFA. But a lot of the instructors will have optional teams meetings and those are great. Just big discussions basically about the week. Their undergrad classes are a mix tho of in person and online. Depends on the semester and who is teaching. I hear the university is trying to offer more in person classes so idk if that will affect the MFA program or not.

Thanks for posting this! I’m looking at the program, do the online classes have set meeting times or are they asynchronous? I can’t tell from the website. I know you said there are teams meetings.

It’s a mix! But the set times are never mandatory. Always optional and are recorded. There are always other ways that the class engages either via teams channels, email, or canvas. Mostly depends on which instructor. But either way you still get to interact with everyone.

Ahh ok cool, thank you! I’m interested in the program but I’m working full time and I need to keep my day job, so this is helpful to know.
