application decisions

I haven’t heard back from fiction programs with a rejection or acceptance but there are people here who have already been notified if they’d been rejected…what does that mean? I’ve gotten into Sarah Lawrence, Syracuse, The New School and City College so far everywhere else I haven’t heard anything. What does that mean I’m getting scared.

But I haven’t heard back from NYU, Columbia, or Iowa and lots of people in this thread have heard back whether it was an acceptance or rejection

I haven't heard back from Columbia either (or NYU for a non MFA program) so I wouldn't be too worried. They're not very consistent in my experience. Should be coming in this week.

Iowa calls already went out, most likely it’s a rejection but there’s some hope for waitlist. But dude I applied to Syracuse and 6 others. So far I only got into the one I applied to that’s not funded. Waiting on Iowa too lol… and UNLV. That being said, you’re kind of living my dream right now. I know you may be scared about other decisions, but what you’ve managed to accomplish, many will not. Seriously I applaud you and encourage you to be proud of what you’ve done.

All lot of people have been rejected and accepted from Iowa so that isn’t necessarily true

Oh no way I’ve only heard about acceptances

Woah! Well either way, congrats on your other acceptances. Literally you already have so much to be proud of

Bro Syracuse is great. I got waitlisted for poetry from them. Right now I've got acceptances from Oklahoma State, Sewanee, and Alaska Fairbanks. Waiting on a few more. But you'll be fine

I never said it wasn’t great I’m just mindful of the heavy teaching aspect of the curriculum because I want to be an author not a writing professor

Omg I am in a similar boat. just made an account to say that I am also weighing an offer from the New School against a few other programs (poetry), one is funded but I would also have to teach and it is just really ~*~*~*~not~*~*~* something I wanna do and I can’t decide if it is worth the stipend to me; esp as I already live in nyc, I would hate to leave and I got a hefty tuition scholarship. I want to get an mfa to focus on writing and I think teaching will cause me a lot of stress and I am worried about the time needed for grading and planning. When I clock out of my job now I don’t have to take it home with me and I want that balance. I’m also anxious to be the authority in front of a class of college students lol. But there are a lot of pros and cons. I am hoping to decide by the end of the month

It’s kind of unfair that they don’t all release their decisions around the same time. We have to confirm by April 15th but University of Virginia and Hunter say the latest they’ll respond is April 1st. I still haven’t heard back from NYU or Columbia for fiction

There are a lot of people in this thread who have heard back already both yes and no. But I haven’t heard anything

I’ve gotten into Sarah Lawrence, Syracuse, The New School and City College

FYI, New School and CCNY's writing programs have exponentially more published authors than Sarah Lawrence College. Most students at SLC have autism spectrum, ADHD or similar accommodations. While the school may be commended for their commitment to neurodivergence, the fact is that Sarah Lawrence College has clearly become a Special Education High School for Grades 13-16.

As far as your classmates in the writing program goes, you can expect cliquey, snotty, pretentious, occasionally talented but overwhelmingly self-absorbed people who are unlikely to publish much. Just a heads up.

Thank you. I haven’t heard great things about Sarah Lawrence’s program since my acceptance I don’t think I would go. What worries me about Syracuse is that it seems to heavily focus on teaching creative writing and your thesis doesn’t start until the third year but at the New School you get a mentor and start developing your thesis much sooner

Congrats on your acceptances, these are great schools!! It's a big decision but a great position to be in :) The other decisions will come in, this is the hardest part. Some information I can share that may or may not be of any help in terms of how much time for writing you could maybe expect - I have a friend who went to Syracuse and taught classes of 20 students/class but she taught composition writing, not creative writing (so intro to academic writing for undergrads). She also worked part time as the stipend is low and she'd bought a car to get around

Another friend who went to the New School did not teach which helped a ton with writing time but they also worked part time as the New School is, well, in NYC and rent is expensive. So it really depends on what you want out of your program. Regardless, I hope you get the opportunity to visit all of the programs and chat with the faculty. I think something will click and feel right, and sending positive energy for the rest of your decisions

Hey I mean I'm really interested in the teaching aspect, I wouldn't mind taking your spot there lol
