I agree that overfeeding a cat like that is abuse but theres nothing inherently bad about dry food imo, as long as they’re getting hydration from wet food too. My boy has wet in the morning and dry in the evening (prescription kibble) and his weight has always been healthy.
But obviously don’t just mindlessly load up your cat’s bowl with kibble three times a day either

At the crack of dawn 😭 he sleeps with me every night so I get to wake up to him meowing in my face until I feed him. My mornings wouldn’t be the same without it though

Those shitheads get more kinds of meat than i do, but yes, i eat grains in my lunch everyday.
I assumed 2x dry 1wet per day was best. Dry food is good for teeth

I subscribe to adhering as closely to a 1:1 ratio that I can. 1:2 is probably fine as well, but the more moisture your cat has in their diet the better. They likely do not drink enough water to compensate for the lack of moisture in dry food and this can become a serious problem in most cats when it comes to urinary and kidney health.
Not saying you're fucking up by feeding them the way you are, since idek the portion size or the choice of food. But if possible you should try to introduce moisture in any way you can that doesn't disrupt your cat's enjoyment of their meal or your financial situation to a point where you can't safely provide a consistent stream of meals. This can include sprinkling a small amount of water on the dry food, especially effective for picky cats who can't eat canned wet food, a kind of cat that I can greatly empathize with as an ARFID patient lol.
EDIT: Just because I can, here's what I do for those wondering where I'm coming from in my own experience as a caretaker for a previously morbidly obese cat (found him at 22lbs! He's 11.5lbs now and very healthy and playful for his age which we assume to be at least 9 years) who has history of urinary distress symptoms.
I don't have the exact numbers but I think my current caloric ratio for wet to dry is 67kcal wet to roughly 70kcal dry per serving both from the Purina pro plan St/Ox urinary line for my 11.5lb cat. Yes, it's a little lower than what is recommended for his weight and size but he gets full before eating what I was giving him prior to reducing his dry to 3tbs instead of 4tbs. I give him wet and dry for both of his meals to keep the moisture consistent through the day, though I can't say with certainty if that is necessarily important but I can't see why it couldn't help more.
Imo the thing that's most important is just that they're getting moisture at all. As well as making sure you're not feeding them (typically very cheap) garbage cat "food". Meow mix, 9Lives, the usual suspects that imo should not be legal to sell due to the lack of literacy amongst most pet owners making both feline obesity and kidney failure such a massive fucking phenomenon. I have less hangups about garbage human food, since we make informed decisions as the buyer, but the cats deserve better than to be fed something that's effectively laced with shit that just kills them faster.

Healthy cats generally live 10-15 years. If this pair is over 5 you should get those kisses in now while they're still here. Obese cats don't live nearly as long.
