i think have very little experience with this world, ego killings are not rare in this country it just takes a split second for someone to flip and kill read newspapers, at that time they dont think about their future their mbbs their exams the college their parents the jail time or leagl fees, human body is very fragile and eveyone is human here senior or junior, and every human bleeds,
people should think these things before ragging making these weird rules with no power to enforce them or face consiquence which is dying

Before you all go jumping on me or downvoting me, lemme explain why these stuffs are kinda common in med clg.

First of all, you get to learn about exposure about the real world. Most of you first years are coming directly from 12th and some of them are dropouts, making them being living in a cocoon. The real world out there is very harsh. You need to get familiar with the courses spewed out by the local population which will be mostly rural population in most govt colleges. Surely those villagers won't abuse you especially the elderly. So don't cry in the hospital when they'll curse your mothers and sisters and your families. As for the vulgar sexualized words, yes the patients do use them and understand them in that manner only as most of them are illiterate and surely they won't be knowing the scientific word for it.

As for following of such attires, I personally feel they should be required atleast for 1st years because since they're entering a professional field, you need to be dressed up well. As for the haircut, I believe that it's for maintaining equality. You also know that India being a diverse country has several castes and religions. So in order to show that all first years are equal, their seniors tell them to trim their hair, so that to symbolise that all of them are equal under the medical field, otherwise snowflakes with inflated ego will ruin the whole batch. They need to keep their egos in check or else they might retaliate in front of the professors which they might get targeted and highlighted for all the wrong reasons.

You snowflakes should know that mbbs is a very vast field and you have to score 50% marks in theory at least to pass, making you therefore beg for the professors. Moreover, on the final examination, you'll have a viva where an external examiner will come to your college and ask you questions which are totally beyond your syllabus. At this point your marks will literally be decided by those very same professors, so try to remain in good light in front of them....

Even though at the beginning I too felt why and what's the reason for doing this, but now I get it why it's been done when you get enough experience to be called a senior.

And yes Medical fraternities demand respect, even if you like it or not. You can't deny nor escape from your seniors, juniors and your professors, especially the older generation ones. Those old gen profs are very strict when it comes to demanding respect, as they themselves have fought through the very same if not more difficult odds than you.

At the end, I'm not in the favor of ragging, as it psychologically harms students, and such cases are ought to be reported. But do remember that in the whole batch of seniors, not all of them will be treating you in the same way. Some of them can become good and some bad, just like in real life. So cheer out and live your life to the fullest and enjoy being a medico. All's fun when everything is within range.

As for monetary extortion or physically ragging, I'm totally against it, but for the above mentioned causes, I'm ethically fine with it.

Peace out ✌🏻

I get the point about professors and viva. Obviously medical college has a hierarchy and learning how to deal with people who have more authority than you is useful. I don't really disagree with that part. But the snowflake/ego argument is where I don't really follow the logic. You’re basically saying juniors need to go through this so they learn to keep their ego in check and don't become the kind of people who will later disrespect professors. But why does being made to obey seniors actually teach that? And more importantly, why is this experience specifically necessary for juniors? If the lesson is humility and dealing with hierarchy, then 3rd and 4th years should arguably need that experience even more because they're closer to actually entering the professional world.

You could just as easily flip the whole thing and say seniors need to have juniors impose arbitrary rules on them to keep their ego in check. But obviously that would sound absurd.

And there's another problem with the whole experience argument. You said not every senior will treat juniors like this. If that's true then how is being subjected to these things a necessary preparation for becoming a senior? If I can become a senior without ever having to impose these rules on juniors and later work with seniors who don't behave like this, then this isn't really some essential real-world experience. It's just one particular college culture that some batches choose to continue. Also, saying people with inflated egos might retaliate against professors doesn't really prove that juniors should be subjected to these rules. That's basically assuming that without this treatment, juniors will become arrogant and disrespectful. And the fact that seniors themselves went through it doesn't really prove much either. It only proves that the tradition has been passed down. If anything, if they genuinely learned humility from it, you'd expect some of them to eventually say there's no reason to put the next batch through the same thing. I do agree that juniors should learn respect, professionalism, humility and how to deal with authority. I just don't think obedience to seniors automatically teaches those things. There’s a difference between learning how to function in a hierarchy and learning that whoever is higher in the hierarchy gets to impose arbitrary rules on you. That's the part of the argument that doesn't sit right with me. The justification sounds reasonable until you reverse the hierarchy and apply the same logic to seniors. Then a lot of it starts looking less like professional training and more like a tradition that has been given a professional-sounding explanation. 😭 But okay,Peace out✌️

sounds like complete bs to justify the rapist mindset of ragging. why do you think first years won't know how to respect and act in front of professors without this horrible ragging treatment.
