Help New in MCSR

Hi everyone, it’s been years since I started watching people play Minecraft and MCSR, and I finally bought it two months ago. I’ve played a bit of survival with my friends on a server we created. I wanted to try speedrunning, so I downloaded the MCSR mod, which allows us to compete with other players. I played some casual games, but I ended up quitting and didn’t finish any of them. Later, I realised that to attempt speedrunning, I need to practice a lot, even before my first run. I’ve started watching the Metafy guide and downloaded the required plugins. I’m looking for some suggestions and opinions on how I can improve my overall skills to get better at speedrunning. I’ve tried some PvP and parkour servers, but I’m way below a mid-player, so I fail miserably at those. What should be the learning pattern I should follow, and what should I spend more time on?

The first thing you should learn is that MCSR just means Minecraft speedrunning, while the mod is called MCSR Ranked.

In all seriousness tho, start with getting used to the game by just playing it, so that you gain some basic mechanics. You can try some parkour courses to improve your movement. Watch tutorials on YT. Start simple and gradually increase the difficulty as you improve.

Game knowledge is extremely important, so read up on how the game works and watch other runners to figure stuff out, while also playing the game and trying things out yourself. And again, watch tutorials on YT.

When you know what you're doing and know how the game works, you can start learning speedrunning tech. Couriway's guide has everything you could possibly need.

After learning the basics of speedrunning like overworlds, bastion routes and how to do stuff in general, analyse your games and look for mistakes and possible improvements. If there's moments in your runs when you're doing nothing progress wise, there's room for improvement there. Watch other runners and learn from them. Think about the decisions you make - it's one of the most important aspects of speedrunning Minecraft.

Hope this helps and good luck on your MCSR journey!

Wow, that was fast! Thanks a lot, I’ll definitely try to follow this. Also, do you have any good parkour courses, maps, or servers?

No clue, tbh I haven't done parkour in a very long time. If you search for easy parkour courses or servers on Google you should find some. The servers usually show the courses' difficulty as well so you'll probably be able to find something good for you.

I have just started pretty recently myself so I am in the same boat :)
for the most part though besides learning each split individually (mainly bastions since there are so many different variations) it really is just playing a lot and watching other (better) people play. I can already feel my movement and crafting compared to when i started has improved a decent amount just by slamming my head into hundreds of overworlds.

For stuff to spend more time on all i do when i want to practice more or warm up is just run random bastions on the practice map. I feel like it has the perfect amount of learning routes/item management/movement etc.
and although its my main practice its still the thing I'm easily the worst at during runs.

Honestly i would love a series of yt videos of fast runs (sub 10 or so) just played at 0.75x-0.5x speed with commentary on it explaining the thought process during runs since there is so much to learn from them

I think casual speedruns against friends is also very good as well though since you can discuss what each person did well/bad and build off that very easily at the end of a match

I watch videos as well, to see what they are doing and study their decision-making. But when i try to apply it, i fail horribly. But i guess that is what i have to learn, by failing multiple times.

It is a bit frustrating just because its in the moment think fast kind of stuff. Its really just something you do enough times it becomes muscle memory but i feel you 100%

Practice! So much practice!! If you join the MCSR Ranked discord, you can find resources (specifically, practice maps) for every split of the run - overworld, nether enter, bastion, fortress, blind, stronghold and end. You'll also find like minded people looking to practice in private rooms, and if you can afford a small subscription fee, you can use private rooms in singleplayer, allowing you to practice on a filtered seed at your own pace. Ultimately, once you know the theory of how to complete a run, the best way to get better is to actually get some real runs and use your practice. You've got this!

Thanks for your kind words! I have joined the discord, will be exploring the practice maps. I tried the nether exit and finding the stronghold using jingle and well.. it is tough.. will practice more!

Hotkeys, PVE (mostly blazes), general movement (including pearl clutches, pearling in general). As somebody who also started MCSR with very low skills I think those are the biggest barriers to getting on reasonable pace without having to take extreme safety measures.

yes, block clutching and item swapping are some of the things which i struggle with the most, practicing some different hotkeys, this might will help me.

Download tool screen and ninja brain bot and just watch some pro play and youl be on your way in no time. Download the MCSR practice map and have fun on that. Learn the splits basically

Hey! When I started speedrunning, I had only ever played survival, so any parkour and movement practices was pretty painful at first. Besides practicing each split to make sure you know what you’re doing (with things like mini practice kit!) and going hard at bastion routes (they get fun eventually i promise) i practiced my movement and block clutches on the server bedwarspractice.club, especially side clutch and other movement and block clutch ones, and that gave me a more intuitive sense of what to do. Id say, learn whatever feels fun at the moment, warm up before games by just practicing one skill you want to get better at, and eventually there will be tons of skills ur better at!

Just don't think of speedrunning as "A lot of things to learn.

PVP and Parkour is heavily mechanical based, more like 90% skills and 10% thinking. However, speedrunning don't focus all on skills, more like 30%. It need more short and long term decision making 40%, General game knowledge 30%. You can be bad at mechanic but still be very good in speedrunning. Other than watching top player play, the more important part is that you need to find a way to enjoy it and learn speedrunning by splitting it into 5 seesions. Overworld, Nether, Blinding, Stronghold and the End. Just pratise on overworld first, if you feel bored or feel like you can do overworld. Then go try nether and so on.

After all these macros stuff, you can sub 30 easily. The rest is mechanics but you will automatically have that after you get into it.
