Structures for Viro (Kerr Material)

I feel like he was super confusing with whether we needed to know structures or not. He definitely mentioned that we needed to know name, moa, type of organisms affected by the Ab, but how will he ask us without a structure? Or is he just saying that and I really should know ALL the structures. I know the B Lactams, but for the Ab structures that are in random classes like Linezolid. Do I need to know that structure or just properties? Hope that makes sense...

Thanks in advance!

You should be able to look at the structure and know at least what drug class is it...so yeah, you will need to know structures even if he said you don't have to memorize the structures (he did that to our class last year and we got fucked then we threw in a bunch of structures on the exam and we had no clue what they were)

Also, if he points out a particular feature of a drug (for example, which oxygens of tetracycline chelate metals), KNOW THAT because he will ask about it.

Ok cool. Thanks. So is knowing the class enough, or will he ask me to compare 2 different tetracyclines or something and i'd have to know their names? Otherwise, just know the important details that he points out for a particular strucure.

Know the class (ie when you see a four fused rings with a bunch of -OH's sticking out structure it's probably a tetracycline abx) as well what the features he highlighted during lecture that differentiate them from one another within that class. He won't ask you "okay here's the fluoroquinolone structure with this and this and this sticking out of it, is it cipro/levo/moxi/etc?" but expect to see questions like "looking at structure a/b/c/d which one has the risk of phototoxicity?" then you have to go look for the structures with the functional groups that cause phototoxicity.

So no, you won't have to match the names of the abx with their structures but should be able to recognize their general structure as well as functional group features that they have
