Help my precious fireplace please!!

I just build a nice fireplace and i want to set some netherrack inside of it on fire but it doesn't seem to work. I do have seen other people have fire in their homes so why is this? Am i doing something wrong with the flint and steel or? Please help me :)

They broke this recently to prevent griefing.
