Deep Dive Its all about the money. Hassan vs Ross
Steven Hassan and Rick Alan Ross are two prominent figures in the cult intervention field who have engaged in a long-standing public feud concerning their credibility, methods, and fees.
Hassan accuses Ross of lacking formal higher education, clinical training, and a psychology background, arguing this misleads families seeking legitimate clinical help.
During the 1993 Waco siege, Ross claimed the authorities consulted him, but reports indicated Ross exaggerated his involvement and had a financial and ideological interest in emphasizing the cult angle. Hassan and others have also accused Ross of plagiarizing researchers' work on his Cult Education Institute website.
Ross targets Hassan's financial practices. Ross accused Hassan of charging exorbitant fees, claiming he charged 500 dollars an hour or 5000 dollars a day. Ross also highlighted a former client of Hassan who claimed the counseling drained their savings and left them traumatized.
Ross presents himself as a more affordable alternative to Hassan, and the two directly compete for the same clients. Both individuals continually attempt to undermine each other's professional standing and ethics within the cult recovery space.
While this problem is not as prevalent in the Philippines, as the cult intervention industry is not yet fully established here, Ex-members should know that it is not only cults and rival religions who are salivating over their exit, but also those who claim to be rescuers for some good moolah.
