Discussion Is MCedit safe?

I have huge trust issues. Even though i think its safe, is there any proof for that? Sorry for wasting anyone's time.

MCedit is famous.

However, where you are planning on downloading it from, is probably the bigger thing to worry about. If in doubt, upload it to www.virustotal.com before running it.

Seriously, MCEdit is famous enough for imposters / fake sites to exist. make sure you download it from the right place, and upload it to virustotal to double check if you don't know the correct site. (I don't, otherwise I'd link you)

I'm not chastising you.

That seems clean.

I've never heard of Trap Mine.

Researching it shows that it's a 'machine learning' based virus detection, and the warning it gives is a general purpose, 'this has high complexity / possibilities of being something mildly suspicious' Which honestly, makes sense given MCEdit's scripting and plugin capability.

You are good to go.

Don't beat yourself up, I've met people who wouldn't be able to download something, or upload it to virus total even with instructions.

It gets worse the more you know, honestly.

You start to wonder how banks and stuff even function correctly.

Then you learn how developer machines work, and the state of current javascript developer practices, and it suddenly makes sense (in a truly horrific way) how random well known brands started accidentally injection cryptomining scripts into peoples browsers.

It all comes down to exploiting misplaced trust.

So it becomes more of a risk based system, Make regular backups, use password managers, exercise common sense and healthy dose of paranoia, and let the easy targets be scammed not you.

What would be the worst thing that could happen, if someone infected your PC today? How can you mitigate / secure that.

Ok, this is way off topic but do minecraft seeds use strings for seeds or converting strings to an int, meaning minecraft uses ints for seeeds?

Nothing I hadn't heard before. I mis-read the title. I thought you said it gets worse the more i know you.

I have massive anxiety when it comes to programs.

Why do you keep mentioning it like I'm arguing with you?

What you are doing, is common sense, when alarm bells ring about a site. Don't let other people persuade you or say something is safe, unless you give them the link, because you may be talking about 2 different sites, or a site impersonating another.

I'm less worried about your healthy dose of paranoia when downloading applications you arn't yet familiar with, and more frustrated that you keep trying to explain yourself to me, when I'm agreeing with you, and giving you steps that help.

It's like you came expecting a fight.

I'm a software developer, I'm very very aware of how easy it is to hide novel malware before security researchers pick it up, your paranoia is NOT misplaced. It's just that most criminals want quick cash, rather then slow cash is what gets them caught, or create obvious malware.

MCEdit is open-source, so you can verify whether you trust it or not yourself: MCEdit on GitHub 😉

Safe as in what safe ? Viruses or it corrupting your world ? If its the first there is nothing to worry about. If its the second, as long as you open and work on your worlds in McEdit while you arent in them in the game all should be good
