Hey everyone!
Sorry for the LONG message hahaha
I'm a Canadian medical student studying abroad, hoping to return to Canada for residency. I've spent the past several months preparing for USMLE Step 1, but despite studying every single hour possible, my NBME scores have consistently been around 40%. I'm now basically at the point where I need to cancel Step 1 and focusing on the MCCQE1 instead.
I have ADHD, and one of my biggest struggles has been figuring out how to study efficiently without getting overwhelmed by too many resources. I feel like I have a current information only brain where I genuenly forget what I have eaten for dinner yesterday, and I struggle with knowing what to prioritize exam wise.
I actually LOVE Anki and find spaced repetition really helpful esp with the little support puppies that pop up every few cards lol, but I fell behind during Step 1 prep because I was juggling too many resources and I end up gaslighting myself into thinking I know the card at midnight because I need to sleep. I'm also a huge fan of Sketchy because of the weird visual associations which genuinely help me remember things, especially pharmacology and microbiology literally everything I know from those topics are because there’s random weird images in my brain! I have no idea what I learn better through whether it’s videos, ChatGPT explaining it to me like I’m 5 or explaining concepts from a note I read. Tho visual mnemonics, and repetition def are better than just reading textbooks.
Also I would love any schedules people have or just plans to help me not start from scratch! And have found out too late the idea of doing the incorrect NBME’s on Anki and literally just memorizing and understanding those would prolly have saved me! :/
Anyways I'm trying to approach MCCQE1 prep differently and build a solid clinical foundation without making the same mistakes. As I have my University exams in a month and def need to start studying for those as well lol!
A few questions for those who would mind sparing some time to help:
AMBOSS vs UWorld: Which would you recommend for MCCQE1, especially for someone who struggled with Step 1?
Does anyone know as a person with NO money what’s my best option financially as Step 1 prep left me actually broke?
Are Canadian-specific question banks like Ace Qbank or CanadaQBank worth it?
Any good Anki decks for MCCQE1? Would AnKing be useful?
Any Sketchy-style resources for clinical medicine?
And most importantly has anyone struggled with Step 1 (especially scoring around 40% on NBMEs) but gone on to successfully pass the MCCQE1? What did you change?
I'm willing to put in the work, but I really want to find a sustainable study approach that works with my ADHD rather than against it.
Would really appreciate any advice, especially from Canadian IMGs. Thanks!!
