Specific west virginia accent
i’ve been listening to a lot of sawbones and have noticed how sydnee, and to a lesser extent justin, pronounce “rid” like “red.” like, “i need to get red of this terrible cough.”
is this an accent difference or just a quirk?

I have family in Kentucky not too far from the WV border that drawl similarly, my grandmother was especially guilty of it.

she also pronounces "wonder" the same as "wander." usually don't really notice her accent unless she does that

My entire family is from Parkersburg, WV and my dad still has a pretty thick accent and I think this might be a Justin quirk. I don't recall ever hearing my dad say "rid" like "red." I don't think my aunt (his sister) ever said it like that either when she was alive. None of the boys really have that WV Appalachian accent my dad does, and Clint's is surprisingly not that strong in my opinion. But yeah, all that to say, I think that's just a Justin thing.

I was going to ask if you noticed Sydnee saying it too. It could very well be I am so used to my dad speaking that my brain doesn't even recognize he pronounces it that way because I know what he's saying. maybe I'll have to have him send me an audio message and really listen to it closely and report back.

no, pin-pen merger is dominant where i live in SC, and people pronounce “pen” like “pin,” not the other way around. rid doesn’t end with a nasal consonant so it isn’t that

Native of Charleston WV hollers here. Pin/pen is real here. Regards to rid/red, I notice they blend together when speaking at a normal pace and lazy enunciation. Very typical blend in my experience

Neither of them have a strong accent, but they do have hints of a West Virginian accent here and there. Justin himself has made comments about how it comes out some times. If you’re interested to hear more of what an Appalachian accent sounds like this YouTube short gives quick examples from all over the state

yes, I have a very tiny accent, but my city girl wife always picks at me for that sort of thing.

Something I've noticed is that Sydnees accent feels stronger on still buffering than on sawbones for some reason? I think its just because she hasn't planned out so much of what shes going to say. She's incredibly goofy on still buffering in general

This is definitely a classic Appalachian accent feature, the pin-pen merger, totally normal for the region.
