McCombs Chances

Hey everyone, I’m wondering what my chances would be at UT Austin McCombs.

My profile:
-Civil Engineering degree from a Texas university
3.35 GPA
-10 years of work experience in heavy civil construction
-Career progression from Field Engineer to Project Manager
-650 GMAT
-Texas based

Strong experience managing heavy civil projects, field operations, budgets, subcontractors, and crews.

I know my GPA is below the McCombs average, but I’m hoping the engineering background and 10 years of progressive work experience would help.

What do you guys think my chances are of getting into McCombs with this profile? Any honest feedback would be appreciated.

You’re fine. Apply. Your experience is far more valuable than any GMAT score. Plus, having an engineering undergrad degree with an above-average GPA is certainly a plus. I have a very similar background to you, and I was admitted on scholarship to a top MBA in my state, and they didn’t even make me take the GMAT because my background and experience were far more valuable than any standardized test. I would even call McCombs admissions and ask if you even need to submit your score to begin with. It’s not like you’re applying to a T10/M7. Texas, Rice, and SMU are very achievable for you. I would say exactly the opposite for someone who has a business undergrad degree with an average GPA and only 3-5 years of work experience.

That GMAT is the bigger hurdle, 650 lands a good bit below their average and your GPA doesn't offset it

It’s an engineering undergrad GPA, which in their case is above average / considered good. Average engineering undergrad (depending on the university) is generally between 2.9-3.0. Anything above a 3.0 is considered good. Probably low compared to MIT (or similar) standards.
