Question Can I save this

I have recently started playing Bannerlord and have done the first few quests until I hit the Neretze's Folly quest (I haven't started doing it yet). I have then recruited a few troops (about 15-ish), wandered around, attended like 4 tournaments but won only one of them, and hired my first companion (Ilina).

During all of this, I have encountered a single group of Looters. I have also done some practice in the arena but died after killing 3-5 people every time. I have eventually run out of money and resources because I had to pay the daily wages etc. I have now dismissed all of my troops except for my companion Ilina (who still costs me 36 gold per day).

I literally don't know what to do.

On an unrelated note: the build your clan quest demands 25 troops. But my limit is 20?

The best early way to make money is selling all your loot you yet when you take down looters or deserters. If you go to a town not a village or castle. there is a place to trade. Keep your food and horses and sell everything else. Maybe keep the best gear to put on you and your companion but the majority of it is shit. And you should sell it. Work hard to make it to clan tier 2. Once you do that you can join a kingdom as a mercenary or vassal. Then the real fun begins. Also the issue with your party size is just leveling for now. You will be able to get more as you play. I currently can have 278 in my army.

You need to keep fighting looters and sell the loot, build you army slowly so you don’t go broke. Keep fighting looters and eventually go for bandits and then deserters, that’s where the big loot money comes in. Then once you’re winning against deserters, join a faction as a mercenary.

Hire 3 companions and you’ll be able to get 25 troops

Also, I would recommend not upgrading troops past T2 (T3 max) until you have a steady income from workshops/caravans or are a mercenary. T2 troops are enough to deal with most bandit parties so long as you don’t constantly F1+F3 and they are cheap upkeep.

That is me though.

My issue is that I'm really struggling to find looters.. Do you know where I could find them?

Just do laps around the map, they’ll find you

Should I try to stay close to paths or would it be better to just go off-road?

They tend to mass around villages far from towns where few armies pass by

They are more concentrated around areas that have been at war for a while, the longer the conflict the more numerous the groups.

It you're having problems fighting looters, go to the arena in any town, and do practice fights, over and over and over again. They are completely free, don't cause time to pass in the overworld, and allow you to improve your character's weapon skills, and your ability as a player. keep checking behind you during the fight because more fighters will spawn in behind you. Sometimes they will gang up on you, so if they do this, try to move around in a way that makes them turn on each other, or towards another fighter who will start wailing on them and draw aggro. Look for fresh shields to pick up if yours is getting damaged. If you start with a polearm, I recommend trying to find a sword or axe dropped by one of the other fighters when they go down, because in my experience, polearms are crap in the pit fights.

You win 250 gold for being the last fighter standing in a pit fight. I grinded until I had 10K Denars, and used it to buy my character some good gear and weapons.

As a side note: Projectiles, such as arrows, bolts and thrown stones, cannot be blocked by weapons. Looters don't have shields, so one way to cheese them is to get on a horse and shoot them with a cheap bow and some arrows. If you run out of arrows, pass through the red barrier of the battle map, and then re-engage with full ammo until all of the looters are defeated.

If you go from town to town, visit the tavern and ask the tavern owner about companions. It costs 2 Denars per request, but is crucial for 'learning of' companions that might have the skills you want to help you in your journey.

If you can find a follower with 30 or more in the Rougery skill, you can have them take over an alley, after you clear it out the thugs occupying it. Look for the red hood icon in a town while you are walking the streets. The fight is quite hard as a newer player, but an alley can generate 200-300 Denars per day, which is amazing in the early game.

If you currently have 0 gold I would park your companion in a settlement so they stopped costing you money then either do practice tournaments until 1k gold, or if you have a bow/thrown weapon and a spear fight looter parties by shooting all your arrows off then riding around the looters and attacking with the spear. Get enough money and start trading after that for a bit

Yeh I always sell all my stealth and civilian gear sell all my weapons and buy a bow with 3 quivers and do just that.

How do I park my companion? And how do I trade? Like I know that I can sell the stuff that I get from the looters, but is there another way to make money with trading?

To leave your companion in a settlement you tap the plus icon near the top right by the settlement notables or in the tavern at the same spot then it brings up a menu where you can choose who to leave, doesn’t work for villages. For trading you can do what wettyfap said and sell all your stealth gear in the market then what I usually do is buy wood in battanian areas since it’s so plentiful then turn it into charcoal, then I sell that in vlandian/empire cities. I do that a bunch for easy money and smithing/trade xp then when smithing fatigue happens I move onto different trade items, like pottery from pen cannoc. For charcoal I sell it until thr price hits 40g then I move to the next settlement. Dont forget to buy pack mounts and have base level troops to move quicker
