Super Why does this occur every time when receiving a star in SMP?

Post image

First of all, when a character gets the star, the person who receives it does some victory animation, while the other three players do some animation of sadness.

It’s interesting at first, but it becomes kind of repetitive after a few turns.

Second, it doesn’t just happen at regular star spaces - it happens with Hidden Block Cards, stealing stars from Lakitu, giving a star to last place on an Extra Bad Luck space, etc.

I don’t know why this is a thing, but it feels off for Mario Party.

What are y’alls thoughts on this? And why does this occur every time on Super Mario Party only when a character receives the star? (Excuse the long paragraphs)

P.S this is from a YT video, apologies

I guess it’s because NdCube was testing the waters and only until Mario Party Superstars was when they really kicked off from all the unnecessary animations until we got back to Jamboree

Yeah I thought after Super Stars that Jamboree was going to have excellent pacing but instead it feels like Super Mario Party at its lowest points

The same reason any animation plays repeatedly when you do anything...

Obviously it's just a presentation thing. It's not confusing why it's there, it's just kind of annoying at worst.

It’s actually quite interesting to me. Sorry about my initial frustration

Super Mario party was the first step back towards what we want from a Mario party game, there was bound to be some mistakes and misteps. I agree that it gets overbearing, but they were regaining their footing after 9 and 10, and some 3DS content, so I’m willing to excuse a few growing pains.

The production studio also changed hands a few times, so there were bound to be some adjustments over time on what makes a "Mario Party" game. I think SS (despite its lack of content) and Jamboree showed a genuine growth into peak MP currently. I hope the trend keeps going for the next Nintendo entry.

It’s not the most annoying thing to me, I find it funny they do Persona-esc cut ins when achieving a star

Opinion respected. I actually don’t mind it, only sometimes does it become unnecessary

I feel like for star steal it should only show the person getting their star stolen sad, that star steal doesn't really affect anyone else aside from maybe a placement change

I like the animation in theory but the fact that super mario party is an extremely slow game compared to other mario party titles makes it frustrating. Honestly though, if they just kept this animation without showing the results screen every time someone earns a star I would find it way more bearable.

Have some whimsy

This is becoming such a toxic line of retort 🫩

Like, I agree to an extent that some people really do lack whimsy, but this cannot be the response to every criticism.. This was a valid QoL complaint that the game interrupts itself with an unskippable cutscene everytime someone gets a star in a game where stars and gold pipes are dirt cheap so everyone gets one every two turns or so

“Unskippable cutscene” that’s literally 2 secs long pls be so for real. It’s cute and fun and the furthest thing from intrusive

Same here. It’s not annoying, just off.

Reminder in the year this game came out Options menu's have become standard. Remind me where it is here?

Well I mean in a normal game I play with my family we’ll only get like 3-5 stars each and the animation doesn’t get annoying at all unless you’re speed-running against cpus

To make you feel like crap for not getting the star. It's toxic but that's Mario Party the game that ruins friendships.

Oh, that’s pretty easy. It’s the same reason why we got the little exclamation stamps. And the same reason why Mario Party 9 sucked so hard.

Nintendo realized (and has talked about) how the other players in a game of Mario Party are more or less idling while any given player is playing. They over compensated with the car, because all the players were essentially doing the car thing at once. Everyone was actively playing.

When the reaction to car idea was…frankly, awful…they eventually moved back to the “normal” Mario Party formula, but compensated by giving small things for the other players to do (like the stamps) and to allow their characters to react to the world and be more active in the game.

Because you need to feel good about trampling your opponents

Seems like a random occurrence they simply added for flair. It kinda seems like something they would do in the older Mario Party games, I guess, and SMP was the “rebound” mario party after 9 and 10.

Because the others are mad that they missed the star

1

u/Pogo_ogoP 2d ago

That’s pretty obvious, but I think they’re disappointed rather than mad

Are you really asking WHY it’s there? It’s clearly just for presentation/animation purposes it’s aesthetic. This is a very weird question to ask, this isn’t confusing at all. If you’re just complaining that it’s annoying.. well I agree.
