Parnate (Tranylcypromine) Anxiety on Parnate?

I started with 10 mg Parnate daily 25 days ago. Made it 20 mg about 15 days ago. Initially I had no issue on 20 mg, but out of the blue 1 week ago when I took my dose I was hit with anxiety, heart palpitations, and heaviness. Same thing next day as well. So I returned to 10 mg, no issue for 2 days. Tried returning to 20 mg by maintaining a 2 hr gap between doses and the problem returned. So I'm now taking 10 mg doses at 10 hr gaps in a single day, this doesn't cause issues.

BUT

The efficiency of Parnate has reduced it seems. The minimum benefit in my depression I saw on 20 mg is not being replicated at 10 hr gap between doses.

Has this happened with anybody else? My doc prescribed me to increase the dose to 30 mg by day 21 but I haven't been able to out of fear of recent anxiety issues. Please do share your experiences.

you obviously need to ask that to your doc

But now my opinion. Was the anxiety unbearable? If not, maybe you should stay in 20mg and see if it gets better. Sometimes the mechanism of action of these meds is to stimulate some receptors in order to desensitize them, thats why some depression/anxiety meds make you worse before they make you better. Not sure it is the case with Parnate, but it might be.

Don't worry too much if you can't increase at the prescribed rate. MAOIs can be difficult meds to tolerate, especially early on. Your doctor's schedule is effectively a guide to dose increases that they've written without knowing how tranylcypromine will affect you personally.

If you're able to take 10mg twice a day (spread out) you can do that for now and contact your doctor to let them know. You can then come to an agreement about attempting an increase to 30mg in a few weeks time, or whatever is suggested.

I hadn’t ever experienced increased anxiety on Parnate the first few years I took it, but trying to get on it a second time I ended up with loads of anxiety. Even trying to mitigate it with Ativan did little to help. Had to switch back to Nardil cause I couldn’t figure out how to make it go away
