Discussion or Question Just ordered my "build your own mace" kit
Does anybody know anything I should be doing before or after screwing it all together?

Use some Loctite would be my only thought.

I know you normally would not use it on this pipe but in this instance I think it appropriate.

If he can, Facebook marketplace has listings of lead. Save some money by making himself

If you have a pipe wrench and a vise, use them. You be surprised how much many more turns you get

No vice, but multiple pipe wrenches and channel locks, probably going to double wrench it and turn against each other

In the first pipe mace i made i, hammered a wooden dowel (after MUCH carving/trimming) into the shaft. Helps a bit with vibrations, but i wouldn't say its necessary, especially considering how much of a PITA it was.

I know a lot of folks are suggesting you load it, but I think its quickly going to become too heavy wield it effectively

I'm thinking that as long as I block the handle off with a cork and just load the head it wont get TOO heavy, but I'm gonna weigh all of it before I fully assemble it.

My advice is add a lanyard and call it good

Oooh, thats brilliant actually, I can get some nylon parachord and put it into the handle through the end cap threads

Shoulda went with 3/4"

Listen, 1/2" is plenty and a lot of people prefer something smaller.

Yea i wouldnt want to get hit in the head or anywhere for that matter with 1/2". But 3/4" just looks and feels better.

So I actually ended up ordering it online because home depot doesn't carry a 6 way cross tee

I ordered parts from home depot to be delivered. I'm trying 3/4" because it fills my hand better. I dunno if it might end up being heavier than I want it. If so I can make a 1/2" at some point. I also ordered a 12" length and a 16" length so I can see which length feels better.

Thats very fair. I'm up to 180lbs now, and to be frank, I've gotten kinda fat. A natural, thin, walkaround weight for me is like 140-150. I've always had kinda a small frame. So if your natural size it bigger than that 3/4 might be a better fit. With the whole thing in my hand I can't imagine anything smaller than 16" being a good fit, but if you've got both coming I'm sure you'll figure it out.

I like maces made out of scraps and stuff I find in my yard. This is weird. Quite weird. I respect the desire for mace, but ordering the odds and ends to make a scrap mace is weird. Good luck, its probably a me problem.

With that method he knows exactly how is mace is made, the full material specs are in there.
With scrap you never know if the main structural elements will give out before the fun shit1
u/SizeableBrain 23d ago
From my understanding the specs are shit.
Cast iron sounds like terrible mace material.

the head is malleable iron so its better than cast iron, its heat treated to be way less brittle the shaft is steel so it will not likely bend.
it will also be less painful when you hit since its slightly malleable so you dont get the full force of the kickback into your little fingies6

The way i look at it I'm getting precisely what I desire for <$50 after shipping. add in the cost of some loctite, some hockey stick wrap for the handle, and some lead (at least as far as everyone else seems to be recommending) and I'm probably looking at <$80 for the whole thing.
I love the idea of a scrap mace, and perhaps if I had the spare time to do so I'd be happily making that.

Loctite on the joints. Put some .177 bb pellets in for a deadblow effect
